This is a Polish/Communist take on Copland? In the early 50's a composer had to toss in some folklore into his stuff, the Ministry of Culture guys expected that, so. Mr. Lutoslawski, following Bartok a bit, ends up doing a very nice job, making a lot of people happy long after the disappearace of Communism. Actually Communism was good for classical music in some ways, and this Republican House of Representatives should consider authorizing a Federal Dept. of Culture.
All recordings made by Lutoslawski himself are quite sloppy. First symphony contains several bad notes in second movement and here indeed cellos start ahead of timpani which is simply lousy entrance.
Perhaps this fellow from Slovennya is simply jealous of Lutoslawski? Perhaps he is a Polonophobe too? Certain desperate mediocrities and racists seem capable of unimaginable destruction in order to vent out their frustration and bitterness. Usually they cowardly attack those whom they regard as weak.
It is nevertheless a little dissapointing that his later works, much more premeditated, remain much less popular ... his fourth symphony for example ... a masterpiece which, not only to me, seems uncomparable with anything else.. you can't find it on you tube, and it's hard to find something as powerful, not only within the scope of his own works...
premiered in 1954, this is one of Witold Lutoslawski most interpreted works, played regularly in the program of the best oschestras, the polish composer is one of the key names of the music world in the 20th century
@beethomozart I don't know if the Boston Symphony has ever played this.. They may have under Charles Munch - but I have never seen it in the program. Maybe it's a work that requires more rehearsal time, or because there's concern that the season ticket-holders don't care much for a 20th century masterpiece like this one - so they don't bother with it. I do hope I am wrong.
@PENNSY671E I live ina East Bay Area and was today at the concert of a local symphny orchestra and the conductor announced the prog for the next concert...to my surprise Lutoslawski's piece will be played.. I am so happy about that, especially being Polish.
This is the first time I hear Lutoslawski's music. It left me speechless. :)

This is presumably the greatest piece of classical music of the 20th century.

Why does it sound like everyone is way ahead of the timpani, or just way out of time?? I am playing this piece and I know it's not beat displacement.
