this is one of my favorite movies. everything about it is just right! the acting, the story, the special effects! it's just perfect! I wish modern action films were as good as this, it's a classic!
I could confirm that we are currently in a Galactic War and a war between Galaxies. There is a lost ship which was lost during the Galactic War (70,000 years ago). He is sacrificing his robots(and robot crystal ships) relentlessly trying to retrive this ship from his Blue star. The ship is made from a pulsar and the material could withstand excessive heat. The pilot was a rebel who stole it becaus he later found it that it colud obliterate moons and planets with magnetic wavelength(force field).
A unique move from a unique time period. There's no way a film like this should go through the stupid remaking process that plagues HollyWEIRD today. The Cold War is long over, so remaking this film today would prove absolutely pointless.
@Kazys667 then why don't they have one yet? That's right, cuz they cant build one. All Russia does is wait to see what America tries to come out with and then they try to play ketch up.
The plane was less fabulous in the novel; it was a modified MiG-25. What counted was that goofy "think in Russian" weapon system and some Stealth capability.
Thank you Americans. Creating fighters like you showed in this movie are less difficult for us Russians than creating toilets like that on Paveletskaya station)))))).
@emancoy did did you forget about the SR71, aka the blackbird? I'm guessing that was what this plane is based on - though in the film and book, it is a secret MiG 31 that never was
well, its a good thing such a fighter plane was never made
do we have something that comes close to this thing at present? or what we have now is actually better? I read about supersonic speeds, but physics wouldn't allow the movie specs to happen in a real plane.

Actually the "firefox" was based on the MiG 25 which in the late 1960s was the USSRs secret interceptor plane. The west knew nothing about the capabilities of the MiG 25 at the time, all they knew is that it was more advanced than anything they had at the time and was so fast that it couldn't be shot down by any weapons system NATO possessed at the time.
This is one of the best movies of all time, no super slow mo moves, no "hunks", nothing flash, all down-to-earth Clint throug and through - it is a real shame that "Firefox Down" wasn't made as a sequal
It would be great if they enhanced the movie, making it into 3D, noot sure if people would welcome CG enhancements of the original though...
@JayHawke84 Well, at least fix the special effects that didn't look convincing; that would be okay. And I read Firefox Down. Surprisingly potent stuff. Would have made a badass sequel, to be sure. Loved the "brainwashing" stuff in the hospital.

I've got to get me one of those. If they were real. And if I had a few billion dollars. It's not going to happen; I should just give up all hope.

Special effects still look better than today's CGI.

The special effects were amateurish by today's standards, but back in 1982 that was the best we could do...

Cost to the Soviet Union of the Firefox flown by Clint Eastwood : a lot of rubles.
Cost to the Soviet Union of the Firefox flown by the Russian pilot : just as many rubles.
Look on the face of the total scumbag KGB colonel when he sees the Soviet leader arrive just as Clint is flying away in his Firefox : PRICELESS.
