why? the dirt adds to the car and also removes the smooth area the air flys over

at the same time though the tiny pits and gullys formed by the uneven dirt allows tiny pockets of air to be trapped which the faster moving air can more easily pass.

right but relative airflow around the car will be 1-2 inches above the metal. If you have seen old airplanes with the rivets one may think that they destroys the planes fuel econmy but it dosent because the relative airflow is above the rivets.

A dirty car might be fore fuel efficient than a clean can because dirt can fill holes and cracks that would break up the flow of the air over the car.

This is a question of fluid mechanics.

The reason they put dimpled shapes on a golf ball is because it creates turbulent flow of air over the golf ball. This allows the air flow to remain attached to the golf ball for longer as the fluid flow is more highly energized. The type of flow allows the gold ball to fly further distances. Look it up.

I think that they are trying to test this idea on a dirty car, with hopes that dirt will have a similar effect on a car as dimples do on a golf ball.
