  • I like this version a lot particularly because it has what I think is the correct amount of pedaling and tempo.

  • que buena era, que grande... siempre viva en su musica. Estes donde estes, gracias!!

  • OMG!

  • Pianists from the 50's and 60's blow modern pianists away.Larrocha, Rubenstein and the like. I never hear clean playing anymore. Too much pedal and mush. This is one of the most difficult compositions to play cleanly and she does it with ease. The training now must be different than my time. Something is different. For those of us who grew in that time frame, we can easily distinguish the sound quality. As I recall I had to play first without the pedal then add it later for emotional content.

  • @autohckr Do you know Yundi Li? He's a Chinese classical pianist, and he's at the same level of Larrocha and Rubenstein.

And do you know Stefano Bollani? He's an Italian jazz pianist, and he's at the same level of Jelly Roll Morton!!

  • @Makenor13 Yes I have listened to Yundi, he is a great pianist and yes, I know of Bollani, another great musician. As far as the same level, that is a matter of opinion. I have compared Yundi's version of this to Larrocha's and honestly, it is no comparison. First, the tempo is Allegreto not Presto, which is what he plays it at. Second, he uses a lot more pedal which muddles it just a bit in certain areas where pedal is not required. But that's my opinion, nothing more.

  • @autohckr You said that pianists from the 50's and 60's blow modern pianists away. It's not true, because in the world today exists a lot of great pianists at the same level of 50's and 60's.

Examples: Yundi Li, Stefano Bollani, Valentina Lisitsa, Sergio Tiempo, Marc-Andrè Hamelin, Lang Lang, do I have to continue?

  • @Makenor13 I am not really here to argue with anyone. My point is only this, pianists of today seem to use a lot more pedal than those of old. The older musicians also seem to be more concerned with "clean" playing than an over expression of "emotion" or speed. I like all of the people you mentioned and I have nothing against them at all. It is just a "sound" difference for me personally. They also played more variety, for example I have yet to hear Yundi play Bach or Beethoven.

  • @Makenor13 I tell you what though, type in "La Campanella by Yundi Li " on YT and when you reach 4:16 tell me what you hear, it will reveal how well your musical ear is. I think the channel is "theveeed". It is very distinct and not the only one. Just want to know if you actually have the distinguishing ear. The cause is him trying to play the last section too fast, which is what I mentioned earlier about Presto.

  • @autohckr On 4:16 in that video he hittes a wrong note, I heard... but I didn't listen that version of the Campanella... type in "Liszt La Campanella Yundi Li", the user who posted it is named "HDVideoCollections3". In that version he doesn't make mistakes and he plays the last part a bit slower, at the same tempo of Alicia.

  • @Makenor13 That was nice rendition, much better than the other. He seems to have a slight problem with that one section for some reason but I am not going to beat up on him, he is a great pianist. I do like his versions of Chopin, my favorite composer actually, but I sure would like to hear him play something other than Chopin or Brahms etc. Maybe Bach's Concerto in D Minor for harpsichord strings and continuo. Would love to hear him on a Harpsichord, that would be something no? :-))

  • @Makenor13 I still can't figure our how Larrocha stretches her hands to play the octaves, one of my old instructors, Amy Tan, could not do it no matter how she tried. Incredible. By the way. Just to let you know on 4:16. Well actually at 4:12 a treble clef goof (right hand) at 4:15 another treble clef goof, at 4:16 a treble clef goof and really loud wrong note bass clef then the last half of 4:16 a "mush" of notes. But then he recovers very well like a true professional.

  • @autohckr Do you know what's the thing I most like of Yundi Li? The touch. He's amazing light when he press on the keys and his hands... fly on the keyboard *-*

  • @Makenor13 I noticed that, especially on that version if La Campanella that you showed me. Great showmanship also. His performances are actually pretty awesome.

  • @autohckr correction: its a SHE, not a he

  • @PianoDude1011 ?? I don't quite follow. Yundi must be the most manly woman I have ever seen lol. Unless of course, you are referring to someone else?

  • Wonderful. Her rendition of this piece is my favorite of all performances of this piece. Even with her prodigous tehnique, she obviously worked very hard to perfect the pieces that she performed. it would have taken a very dedicated perfectionist to perfect the "spiral thing" at 2:22 to 2:27. I have never before hear anything like it.

  • @Sonorazzi Totally agreed :)

  • @Sonorazzi Have you ever heard Yundi Li's version? It's amazing... his touch is fantastic... the song played by Li is... natural.

  • What is there to DISlike ???

  • Wow, such clarity and elegance. No pounding. All music. Thank you de Larrocha, Liszt and Paganini.

  • Despues de escuchar La Campanella por Alicia me deja sin palabras para decir como me siento. Solo dire.......es maravillosa en todas sus interpretaciones. I love her...........

  • It is absolutely as pure as a prayer!:)

  • it is so pure as prayer... just amazing, nothing to sai.

  • Remarkable!!!

  • This is simply magic!

  • One of the best interpretations !

  • @Neopersonageguy THE best.

  • I love this interpretation. IT actually sounds like bells

  • Interprétation fine, équilibrée, pleine de vie! Quel régal!

  • Merveilleuse interprétation! BRAVISSIMO!!!

  • E' l'interpretazione di questo straordinario pezzo che piu' mi emoziona, non ci sono parole!

  • the delicacy only a women could bring to this piece.

  • how does she play the part at 1:25 when she can only reach an octave??

  • @TheRiskyBoxSpread It's not true that Alicia de Larrocha only reached an octave. She used to reach the TENTH. She managed to straighten her fingers and extend the opening of her hands through daily exercises all her live. She came to have her little fingers longer than normal.

She was an exceptional pianist. One of the best!!

  • PERFECTION! The Best Campanella!

  • Amazingly clean and evocative! I didn't think anyone could match Kissin's interpretation, but I've just been proven wrong.

  • 6 people are just plain STUPID.

  • @OrangeSodaKing 7 people are either deaf or stupid, maybe they are both!

  • This song is batshit fucking crazy .. especially the last part .. i.love.it.

  • What's particularly amazing to me is how she delivers such a clear, precise interpretation with hands as small as they were. For a lady under five feet tall and teency hands, her technique was off the charts.

  • @CecilySebastian but she had a really long 5th finger on both hands that saved her. What amazes me most is her performance of the Brahms 2nd Concerto (is on YouTube). Is mind boggling.

  • @mwk12kev, I just watched the Brahms you suggested. .......WOW!!

  • "How's that for clean?"

    YUP! Lol. :)

  • @OrangeSodaKing te explico amor: es no hacer una bola de ruido mezclando los sonidos con el pedal, por eso ésta mujer es impecable!!!

  • ALICIA DE LARROCHA, one of the greatest musicians ever!!!!!!!!!!!

    Brava, brava, bravissiimaaaaaaaaaa!!!!!!

  • Just amazing. Absolutely blows my mind how ANYONE manages to play such a difficult piece with such mind boggling clarity... Yet she has extraordinary depth in her interpretation. Fantastic, and best on YouTube.

  • natural emotion..is the most beautiful thing..that someone can have and cant be learned!

  • itsounds great :D

  • Oh. My. God.

    She ridiculously phenomenal.

  • Alguien ha escuchado una sola interpretacion que le pueda hacer sombra a ésta?

  • WHOA.

  • it's not a case of bad tuning of dubbing etc. many European technicians tune the treble sharp ranging from slightly to a semi-tone, it gives a brighter sound which for obvious reasons may be desirable for this piece and is only a problem when playing with ensemble in which case you just re-tune to 440

  • Magnífica interpretación!! Estoy alucinando!! Que coordinación más impecable y limpieza en su música, que suerte tengo de estudiar en la Academia donde ella estudió! Lastimáblemente no la llegué a conocer pero conozco a muchos de sus discípulos.

  • omg!! I can listen to every notes clearly, jesus!

  • Aw, please listen to La Campanella by Youri Egorov

  • @2itubetoo2 - it's nice, but it's different. He seems to put a lot of expressions where, frankly, there shouldn't. This version is more... I won't say more precise, because his is also precise, but more straightforward, which seems to fit better. At the end, probably just matter of taste; both versions are masterful. Don't you agree?

  • Very nice. But something is a little suspicious.

You will find that her tone is VERY sharp. Either her piano is tuned badly, or this video has been sped up.

  • @Poonertwins Suspicious??? Neither the piano is tuned badly, nor the video has been sped up.

  • @lisilisin: actually, it is very sharp. I actually stumbled across it by accident - I was practicing La Campanella at my piano, and went on my iPod to compare my playing to that of another pianist.

This recording is WAY sharp, and I know for a fact that my piano is in tune (it's been tuned quite recently).

I'm not saying this is not a legit video... I just figured it was a little strange how sharp it was.

  • @Poonertwins my bad. I compared it with Yundi Li's video and it's the same. Perhaps theres a little something wrong with the tuning of my piano... weird because it was tuned only a month ago.

  • @Poonertwins Aw! Haha you ruined it for me, I can hear what you're describing now I can't get it out of my mind. It's still nice though. Yundi Li's interpretation of this piece was also very good.

  • @Poonertwins I hear what you mean, there is something funny around 2.23 and 2.53 for example...

  • 4 people are deaf

  • Excellent execution. Would love to have known the name of the piano she performed this piece on.

  • @weemouse101 I've read she always recorded with German Steinways. Glassy tops, hence the perceived 'sharpness'.

  • @mwk12kev Thanks for that.

  • I am stunned and completely flabberghasted by the total control this perfectionist has. This rendition has my emotions by the short and curlies. I would truly like to find those CDs mentioned above.

  • Official Web Site (Biografy, Performances , Repertoire, Discography, Anecdotes, Photos) : aliciadelarrocha dat com

  • You never studied "La Campanella" by yourself, I fear.

But even when, you don´t understand the spirit of

    tour de force.

    Merrily, merrily, merrily

  • I prefer the Gavrilov version of the finale. I don´t like Bydlo at 4:04 .

  • @The1976spirit NEVER, this is far superior in every level,. Gavrilov is just fast,...

  • Amazing!!!

  • yes yes yes yes yes I love her violence at the keyboard! Brilliante!!!

  • My God amaaaaaazing, so clean, like Kisin.

  • OMG! SHE PLAYED SO CLEAN!

  • La Pequena Campanilla in Spanish. In de Larrocha's hands, Lizst's Paganini transcription becomes a Tarantella. It's a brilliant reading, and totally her own, different from any of the golden age masters I've heard ... Godowsky, Hoffman, etc. De Larrocha is, in my view, an artist with a highly developed sensibility growing out of her native soil. Dead? Shall we really say so, with all the stunning moments she left in her wake? Not one, an armada . . .

  • Magnifique, clair et lumineux

  • Thank you for uploading. What a treasure!

  • Oh wow. I found a cassette tape of this a few years back sitting in a penny sale at a library.

  • I had several MHS LP reissues of her '60's Hispavox recordings, and this was on one of them. Had Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2, de Falla's Ritual Fire Dance, Chopin's Butterfly Etude, and Mendelssohn. Other pieces I can't think of.

  • incredible woman!

  • Bring me the oxygen tank, I'm totally breathless!!!!

  • It's perfect, so clean and organic... my teacher used to say: "wie Perlen von eine Collier" (like pearls of a necklace)

  • Wow! thanks for uploading that! I had seen Yundi Li performing it and he's great, but this performance is awesome!

  • @bcnjd

Thanks much for this info. I was afraid this piece was on an out-of-print CD, and so it is. At least iI know what to look for. It is such a shame that YouTube compresses the audio so much, but even minus the dynamics one can still get so very much out of this spectacular performance.

  • Anyone know where to find the CD containing this? I've looked high and low and in several countries and this piece has yet to turn up as played here by Ms de Larrocha.

  • @shubus this was first recorded in 1964 for Hispanovox HH 10-262 Hipanovox was bought by EMI This series of recordings, (three long play ) were re released on CD in the early 2000's but only en a few countries and are very hard to find, I was lucky to have a copy the Alicia gave me.

here is the content of the three cds

  • @bcnjd These are the recordings which so fascinated impresario Herbert Breslin that he sought her out in Spain (the first four or five times he called her at home, she wouldn't come to the phone because she thought it was some krank) and arranged for her NY debut and a big tour of the USA - she was completely unknown at the time. The rest is history. Thank you Mr. Breslin!

  • @assindiastignani

The first record that Mr. Herbert Breslin heard of Alicia de Larrocha and the one that fascinated him was the recording of Albéniz's Iberia. This was the reason why he try to contact her by writing several letters, at first without any response until Alicia realized that the offer of a U.S. tour was serious.

    0.

  • @lisilisin It's very interesting with Breslin - he had a lot of enemies and he certainly was assertive in promoting his clients, but he was a great PR man and manager, one of the few who really worked for his people, not all of whom were always as grateful as they perhaps should have been. Alicia de Larrocha was one of the few who always and unconditionally acknowledged what he did for her. She had class.

  • @shubus

i suggest you download it from youtube. to your computer and then you can burn it to a cd to listen to it in your car or where ever you wish.

  • @farah73

That's what I did. But I just hate the audio compression that YouTube forces on such a great performance. The true dynamics are absent, but am still very happy to have this, as I never knew it existed.

  • i think that a piece sounds better with emotion than one without

  • well i think that she puts in more emotion into her piece

  • even though this is a great recording, i have to say that alice sara ott has her beat... but this comes a close 2nd.

  • Comment removed

  • @300pianist @300pianist I am sorry , I listened to Alice Sara ott and it is a good performance, but really cannot compare to de Larrocha, her rythmn is weaker and very unstable and the clarity of the articulation is muddy at times, and although Alice plays it slower, the speed does not bother me as much as not having a more defined phrase and clearer understanding of what she is presenting as a piece.

  • @300pianist are you truly comparing alicia de larrocha with alicia sara ott ? lol...

  • DEP Alicia, nos has dejado un gran legado en la música clásica.

  • This interpretation. Others may do it faster, but this is not a horse race. This is pure musicality at it's best. Exquisite technique and extremely good pedaling make this the one I play over and over.

  • Bang Bang? Oh u mean Lang Lang! LOL... With regards to this interpretation, I think it is near perfect!

  • Sensational

  • absolutely delightful and perfect Thank you for sharing

  • Me encanta!

    Es maravillosa!

  • WOW WOW WOW!!!! What clarity and control. It is absolute magic. This is just a complete delight both musically and technically. Thank you SO MUCH for posting!

  • BELLA!

  • Bravissima!

  • speaking of cleaness!

  • She´s a heroine to all small hand pianists everywhere!

Alicia we salute you! = )

  • In 1995, she complained to the New York Times that age was affecting her handspan - and thus her ability to play.

"I used to reach a 10th," she said, referring to the keyboard's gap from middle C to E in the octave above. "Now, a ninth, with some difficulty."

  • @Heero545 Totally with you there!! She plays so brilliantly I can SEE the notes sparkling... it's awesome!!

  • "A heroine to all small-handed pianists everywhere" - Heero545

Totally with you there!! She plays so brilliantly I can SEE the notes sparkling... it's awesome!!

  • This is simply astounding !!! Madame de Larrocha gives us this crystalline rendering of a truly devilish work with what are reputed to be the smallest hands of any of the great pianists of our time. BRAVA !!!!!

  • ouch! OMG!

  • es impresionante

  • cristal clear sound, brilliant

  • Brava!

  • Sparing use of pedal makes this sound really clean.

I'm actually more impressed how dextrous her fingers are...Its really clear no smudges whatsoever.

  • Bloody hell ! this is genius !

  • BRAVA!!!

    Thank you for posting this!!

  • @eddopianist1 : get real!

  • Wow!

  • Amazing!!! Considering she could barely stretch an octave.Te extreño mucho, Maestra!

  • Wow, I did not know that!

  • her "small hands" is somewhat of a myth. There is a New York Times interview where she mentions she used to be able to reach a 10th but in her old age it has shrunk to a 9th.

"In 1995, she complained to the New York Times that age was affecting her handspan - and thus her ability to play.

"I used to reach a 10th," she said, referring to the keyboard's gap from middle C to E in the octave above. "Now, a ninth, with some difficulty." "

  • de Larrocha's phrasing ist wunderbar!

  • Probably the best "La Campanella" on YouTube. Flawless in exectution, just like it should be. :)

  • Absolutely magical.

  • When performing La Campanella, wear lots of deodorant.

  • @wewantcupcakes

    looooooooool

  • Not Yundi Li, not Rubinstein (R.I.P.), not Kissin, especially not Bang Bang--I haven't heaped praise on their interpretation of this peace. Alicia's interpretation is straight on, consistent tempo, with grace, and tour de force.

  • bang bang :)))))))) hahahahahahahahahah

  • @sapfirewand She's sop much better than Kissin playing La campanella, 'cause she plays Liszt just like a chopin..and nooo, Liszt is so much stronger than Chopin like..harder

  • @dquibs2 Don't say "especially". If you dont like his playing, don't say it as if your right. Saying "especially" obviously means that everybody is to know that he doesn't play this piece well. Everybody has there own opinion, and no-one likes to be compared.

  • @dquibs2 whats bang bang?

  • @Tristius it is a chinese piano player

  • @mikelamid theres only lang lang whats bang bang?

  • @Tristius It's Lang Lang....

  • @dquibs2 Agree with you, this is the BEST campanella, PERFECTION and beautifull. and SINGS,...

  • @dquibs2

The video that says "Rubenstein" isn't even his, lol. It's performed by "Shimizu".

  • i love this interpretation especially and 4:04!!

    This is THE BEST EVER!!

  • I'm sorry for you :((

  • Did you ever heard about the "non legato"?. This is an example of a REAL GOOD "non legato". It's not a question of "jointed or disjointed". This is just my opinion ;)

  • I don't know if this is the best but, for shure, is ONE OF THE BEST!!!!!!

  • there will never be the just one "Best" since each of us will prefer a different interpretation =) so "the best" is quite relative. But indeed u can say this is among the Best ive ever heard!!

  • I agree with you, Chopinco. The "Best" doesn't exist... mainly talking about art. There isn't "the best actor", "the best painter", "the best pianist", "the best play"... It is a mistake many people make when giving their opinion.

To say: " This is one of the best", is much better.

  • Hearing this stunning performance evokes what Liszt himself would have sounded like: crystal clear with all the good stuff!

    What tremendous natural artistry.

  • I miss you already.

  • So fantastic and so unique!

    A true legend!

Rest in piece, Ms. De Larrocha.
