brilliant?...genius? ...moving?...wow, what an easily pleased entertainment pallet you people have...calling this garbage brilliant and moving is an insult to REAL musicians...yeah I know curt cobain said he was an artist and for some that makes it real...Ive tried to see the " genius" in this dude...I really have...but it just isnt there...he was simply a greatly disturbed man who happened to know a few notes on a piano and guitar...and little more than that
@johnny2366 Its not that he was a genius or a great musician...it's that he expressed himself fully in his art. He did not express himself in power chords or speed thrashing a guitar. Not even with a great voice...not even with a great voice...but thats why we all like him so much. He is not a great singer, nor guitar player nor piano player. But his emotion is convey ed so thoroughly conveyed in all that he does. Saying that he is not a great artist simply because he is no the greatest
@johnny2366 musician is like saying picasso is not the greatest painter because he did not do realistic portraits. Just because he is not the most skilled in FILLER and "Smart Art" does not mean you can label him as " not genius" He is raw. Pure art. Pure expression, without a label's judgement. Without bullshit american idol. He is art. He is the eyes of the world. He is what we all see but can not speak in words. He is what the broken music industry should have become.
@halfpinoyboy303 ...yeah, thats all nice and fuzzy, but it isnt reality...this mans talent level is below amateur level at best...to critisize real musicians while praising this man to me shows one of 2 things...hypocricy or ignorance..difference of opinion I suppose
Out of curiosity Johnny, do you play any instruments yourself? Are you an artist? Or are you one of those faggots who think Dream Theater are the greatest band ever because they can churn out insanely clean, devoid-of-emotion-and-lyrical-content music at 320 bpm? Art isn't a contest, and if it were, Daniel Johnston would be winning. So let's hear your abilities, or who you consider am amazing musician, because I'll bet you can't play a single song and I'll bet you listen to bland radio rock.
@DilutedFaith ..I play guitar and bass actually but that has nothing to do with it...it doesnt take a musician to see that daniel johnston is anything but one.....amazing musicians?...hmm....stevie ray vaughn...natalie merchant ( one of the greatest lyricists of this generation..of course it wouldnt surprise me if you've never heard of her...considering you believe this guy to be a " contest winning artist")
@DilutedFaith ..It amazes me that people like you resort to things like " faggot" simply because someone disagrees with you..you see an " artist"...I see no more than a mentally challenged man who happens to have a guitar and a mic...talk of his lyrics being genius and all this nonsense?..please...he simply fits in words that rhyme to make up his songs...a talent found in any 5 year old..I'll listen to real music and you listen to this hack and I wont even call you a fag for doing so hows that?
@johnny2366 Hahahaha. The fact that you think Natalie Merchant is obscure just further leads me to believe that you haven't dug any deeper into music than your father's vinyl collection. Have fun with your VH1 Classic, I'll be busy listening to artists that have something to say regardless of how many Grammys they've won.
@DilutedFaith ..I see that your inability to read is as bad as your taste....considering I never said she was obscure....I said I wouldnt be surprised if YOU hadnt heard of her..and no, it doesnt surprise me a bit that someone named " diluted" would praise a talent level found in any elementary school play while at the same time saying something negative about natalie merchant..I can send you vids of my nephew playing the recorder if you'd like .hes 6..bet it fits right into your playlist .
@johnny2366 hey everybody's entitled to their own opinion. my opinion he's still young at heart, he obviously had a mental breakdown but kept true to his passion trying to create ART. He's a pretty much an inspiration in being true to ones self.
@YungZ905 yes, everyone is entitled to their own opinion and my opinion is that most people who think this guy is a "genius" think it because of his disabilities, which is offensive not only to him ( though he doesnt realize it )..but also offensive to people who do actually have talent..you simply can not look at this man and think " genius"....while at the same time saying anything disparaging about anyone else whos ever picked up an instrument or written a song without being a hypocrite
@johnny2366 I agree some tracks are slack but i listened to some tunes like story of an artist, life in vein, and spirit world rising those are great songs
@johnny2366 have you ever listened to story of an artist? it has some of the most genius phrases lyrically that i have ever heard. you are the one assuming he can't be genius because it's simple music. it's ironic that you assume so because the genius is in the simplicity.
@theRADteepee I get the whole " art is in the simplicity"..but this simply is a man with an obvious mental disorder..(or disorders) who happens to have access to musical instruments..the exact same thing is seen in any nursing home or mental institution in this country..( I know this because this is my field of profession ).. Im not at all saying that it isnt inspirational to some to see him exploring his passion..my problem is in labeling it the work of a "genius".. clearly he is not a genius
@johnny2366 you didn't read when i said that the genius is in the lyricism. Again, the assumption that somebody with a mental disorder can not be a genius is ridiculous and pretty much throws out nearly every person in history to ever be considered a genius
@theRADteepee no I read what you put...I just dont agree...and obviously you dont know what the definition of the word "genius" is.."someone who has exceptional or unusual intellectual ability"...that is the definition of a " genius"....and again clearly....this man is no "genius"
@johnny2366 also, i wouldn't consider it inspirational to see him eplore his passion and i don't think anybody does because nobody considers the fact that he has a mental disorder, they just listen to the music
This performance is beyond brilliant. I also feel it is a reflection of proof that Daniel feels guilt over literally "selling his soul" at some point (despite being unwarranted).
daniel johnston is not hip. Kurt Cobain was a CIA operative bent on spreading heroin and religion. Dude the CIA killed him when he decided to make music on his own again. Bleach is Kurt Cobain and nevermind on is CIA music.
I'm sorry, most of you people seem to love this guy, but all i'm watching here is bad tempo fluidity, note choice, lyrics, execution/presentation, and the most truely horrible voice in the world. 3:05, I mean, seriously what is this supposed to be? Why's this guy getting so much coverage?
The thing, skaterblo, (or at least this is how I see it) is that the beauty in his music is not in the precision, it's in the emotion. It's not how he says something, but what he says and the fact that he says it when it would be easier for him not to. It's the fact that a man who was made too fragile is standing up and expressing himself as strongly as he can.
Regarding the technical deficiencies, I'm pretty sure this video is from a dark period in his life. Have you seen the documentary? Anyway, nobody would really call Daniel Johnston a technically talented player, at least not in the conventional sense, but he's a capable songwriter. "Dream Scream" is a good example of a song of his that's well-constructed and very very clear, sort of perfect in itself, although you might like Death Cab's cover better, cuz it's more competently performed.
congratulations im proud of u you watch fox news this is not stupid this is music if u want to call someone with a mental illness stupid go look in the fin mirror a hole
@adamharrison12 speaking as a musician, i think that's a sad outlook. there still is honest music, and there are nonmusicians that can judge music well.
I appreciate your viewpoint. I'm not saying this to be condescending or snobbish (cause I'm sure its nothing you haven't heard before): his method of singing/instrumentation is the perfect delivery for his lyrics. Hundreds of bands have covered him but few to none ever make a lasting impression because they lack the mechanism of delivery for the sincerity and longing of his broken soul. IMO, only his most 'imperfect' voice could accomplish this.
how does he deal with such powerful expression? a performance of such incredible rawness and emotion, its like he is singing this before he is about to be taken away by hellhounds to a very dark place not seen by the eye, but he has seen it somehow, probably in colours of his mind. its like hes turning the world inside out
Brilliant, that song was was written during the worste period in his life, which is why he sang it without even trying to be pretty or melodic..Todays music is decadent and self absorbed and makes me want to puke to be honest.
I think he is the greatest living songwriter and I can't imagine someone else singing his songs, I think nobody makes me cry like he does, he's really touching.
I was just thinking of the 10 times or so I have cried because of music. He must have the place of about 7 of them. I cried for nearly the Cohen I'm your man Documentary (I had to be quiet, I was in the cinema) I love his lyrics too. Dylan, Cohen, Daniel and Bright eyes are really good listening for when you want to hear something being said.
Songs like Story of an Artist and True Love Will Find You in the End have perfectably understandable lyrics, a bit naive, in the pop tradition of Johnston's heroes The Beatles.
But Daniel's work is something I listen to to reach a feeling - I think that's art. Not technically accomplished, but emotionally accomplished.
Also, that the raw material Daniel created can be better arranged and create sophisticated musical work has been proven by Kathy McCarthy on her cover album Dead Dog's Eyeball - one of her songs is on Youtube. It's accomplished music, but it lacks something - the singing is not as driven as Daniel's. Others have made good covers of Johnston songs - the internet is full of them.
Wow, I find this surprisingly moving. Kind of like "Xiu Xiu," if you've ever heard of that band. The feelings and emotion powering the song bleed through the faults.
i just got an idea... daniel was desperate and mental so he sold his soul to become the greatest songwriter ever but satan "dealt him a sorry hand". think about it. listen to his lyrics and read about his life. its 2 o clock in the morning so this might not make any sense.
I have always thought that - that his madness is from the fact he was brought up religious, he made some deal with the devil and "sold his soul" and it's guilt has haunted him since. The sorry hand is his mental illness/depression.
the catch with daniel is simple-someone with such mental problems depression, whatever does some amazing poetry. His music leaves you wondering. His music kinda sucks, its almost like someone trying to be funny, but he never cracks up or loses his composure because its really him.I kinda laughed at him at first and still do somewhat but his words are really deep. His music or lack of is strengthened by some of the words in his songs.Daniel is genuine and can u find that in the entertainment world?????
sorry, but i must disagree in point. "his music kinda sucks." i think his poetry does too. it's confused and there is no sustained imagery in his songs to justify his position as a poet. his words are meaningful and sad and thoughtful, but he has been unjustifiably positioned as an artist when he is really more of a case-subject for testimony to schizophrenia and depression. so he can play a couple chords. he's not a musician, and should not be confused as such.
Musicianship doesn't rely solely on the skill of the musician, there are lots of other things that make them musicians. Is an artist based solely on his or her technical skill? Or are there other things to consider?
It sounds like you see music as a sport rather than an art form, judging by performance only. (Even still, his performances are awesome!)
I agree that Daniel Johnston is not technically accomplished. Nor is he accomplished as a poet. But his works has the quality of honesty - a vulnerable, uncomprising honesty that is touching and makes me want to listen to his recordings when in or to reach a certain mood.
Johnston can not be imitated by more put together minds - his naivity will never be mine, nor Eddie Vedder's, nor Curt Cobain's. However, we can stand in awe and feel the power of that naked childish emotion expressed by a grown man.
it's not a post, its a perspective. i've shared mine and my reasons for it. those of you who like johnston have your own perspective, and reasons for it. art inspires debate, not consensus, which, as i write it, makes me realize johnston is, in fact, an artist. just one that i don't care for.
the problem is with the new version of flash player. it used to sound okay before upgrading.

@adamharrison12 speaking as a musician, i think that's a sad outlook. there still is honest music, and there are nonmusicians that can judge music well.
awaggenspack 1 year ago
@awaggenspack let me hear some of your art then, and I'll judge it until you get my point.

I think he is the greatest living songwriter and I can't imagine someone else singing his songs, I think nobody makes me cry like he does, he's really touching.
lascura 2 years ago

CAW133 3 years ago
Also, that the raw material Daniel created can be better arranged and create sophisticated musical work has been proven by Kathy McCarthy on her cover album Dead Dog's Eyeball - one of her songs is on Youtube. It's accomplished music, but it lacks something - the singing is not as driven as Daniel's. Others have made good covers of Johnston songs - the internet is full of them.
CAW133 3 years ago
Wow, I find this surprisingly moving. Kind of like "Xiu Xiu," if you've ever heard of that band. The feelings and emotion powering the song bleed through the faults.
LittleFishChan 3 years ago
i just got an idea... daniel was desperate and mental so he sold his soul to become the greatest songwriter ever but satan "dealt him a sorry hand". think about it. listen to his lyrics and read about his life. its 2 o clock in the morning so this might not make any sense.
1TheBeatles1 3 years ago
I have always thought that - that his madness is from the fact he was brought up religious, he made some deal with the devil and "sold his soul" and it's guilt has haunted him since. The sorry hand is his mental illness/depression.
jdury 2 years ago
I don't know if it is a blessing or a curse to be able to tap into your spirit like Daniel. He is feeling it.

y0ur0ck 3 years ago 6
the catch with daniel is simple-someone with such mental problems depression, whatever does some amazing poetry.

"his music kinda sucks." i think his poetry does too. it's confused and there is no sustained imagery in his songs to justify his position as a poet. his words are meaningful and sad and thoughtful, but he has been unjustifiably positioned as an artist when he is really more of a case-subject for testimony to schizophrenia and depression. so he can play a couple chords. he's not a musician, and should not be confused as such.
gdkeen 3 years ago
Musicianship doesn't rely solely on the skill of the musician, there are lots of other things that make them musicians. Is an artist based solely on his or her technical skill? Or are there other things to consider?
It sounds like you see music as a sport rather than an art form, judging by performance only. (Even still, his performances are awesome!)
AliobotQ 3 years ago 2

what are these "other things to consider?"
i don't see music as a sport or competition, but it can certainly be judged for quality, as would any other art form.
a stick figure isn't a great painting, unless there's some kind of poingnant statement attached.
this dude's got no form nor substance. bad music, absurd, inconsistent lyrics and no meaningful statement to make.
like i said - beautiful evidence of psychosis, but not good music.
gdkeen 3 years ago
Let me guess, you're the arbiter on what art is?
I've been wondering who held that post.
benchilada 3 years ago
I agree that Daniel Johnston is not technically accomplished. Nor is he accomplished as a poet. But his works has the quality of honesty - a vulnerable, uncomprising honesty that is touching and makes me want to listen to his recordings when in or to reach a certain mood.
CAW133 3 years ago
Johnston can not be imitated by more put together minds - his naivity will never be mine, nor Eddie Vedder's, nor Curt Cobain's. However, we can stand in awe and feel the power of that naked childish emotion expressed by a grown man.
CAW133 3 years ago 2
now there's a statement i won't disagree with. well said.
gdkeen 3 years ago
it's not a post, its a perspective. i've shared mine and my reasons for it. those of you who like johnston have your own perspective, and reasons for it. art inspires debate, not consensus, which, as i write it, makes me realize johnston is, in fact, an artist. just one that i don't care for.
gdkeen 3 years ago
People once said that about John Coltrane, Jimi Hendrix, Bob Dylan, the Ramones.
Just because you marginalize him as a "case subject" doesn't mean he hasn't created something that will outlive everyone posting on this board.
