An abandoned wagon is dangerous because:

1.) You can pick up sickness from them

2.) Sometimes robbers hide out in them and jump you

Have to remember, it is abandoned for a reason. Nonetheless, in this game it is usually worth the risk, because sometimes they are loaded big time, and if you are out of spare parts, an abandoned wagon may have what you need.
