If the boy with the jian learns at least a bit how to use it, it would be better...

a bastardsword is wielded with two hands, a jian with one, it stands to reason that all you would have too do in order to maintain an advantage with the bastardsword is to just maintain contact with the jian users blade and overpower it and keep it at bay. Also Bastard sword has more length. This one looks like had a far better advantage than he did against the kenjutsu guy.
