I got into this video just because I was curious of the strange name "Chizhik" and, to my delight, I like their style of music, which is like pop sound in a free jazz form. My only critics is that..... the pianist & guitarist & drummer didn't get to play their solo chorus......and the climax at 5:19-6:00 was a little heavy and classical and could be better harmonized w/ added rhythme or whatever....otherwise proves Russian can play sophisticated jazz too.
I just don't like the fact that the vibraphone player is pushing down into the keys when he plays. He would get more sound and a better tone pulling up or at least coming off the keys a little bit.
@MidwestChopper9 Obviously you don't know the vibes's technique. The player is dampening the notes 'pushing down into the keys", in order to separate the sound and have a clear music to offer. His phrasing is excellent due to perfect dampening technique. These musicians are top level ! Very serious stuff.
@ThatDevilishOne The instrument has a pedal. The movement of your arm has nothing to do with the sound, aside form visually expressing that you intend for that note to be sustained. I just find it to be a silly superstition in my opinion.
@wiliscool The effect is psychological rather than concrete: of course, you want live performing musicians to act like they flow with music and not be stiff like metal bars. That makes them look like they're there to perform /music/ and not just hitting the right notes at the right time. It's not a superstition, it's called psychoacoustics.
hi i bought 2cds of the chizhik jazz quartet from the the tall guy playing the vibrophone this was christmas 2008 he was playing on the main st in deal town where i live its so good best wishes paul boon deal town kent uk
this is really good. it's an old vibraphone though. we use those durning marching season, ours is broken though. and the mallets are torn on this video lol.
Congratulations from Mexico! I love vibraphone, a life long fan of Milt Jackson and I also grew up listening to danzon and danzoneras at the radio...two thumbs up!

i hate when players on vibes raise up their arms as if to accentuate that the note is being sustained. its obnoxious.

@wiliscool It's called drawing the sound out of the instrument >.>

@gwaur I know. But there are many great mallet players who dont do this. Gary burton, Nancy Zeltsman, etc. In my opinion, its just more effort.

This is some of the smoothest music around. The pianist really looks like he enjoys it. And that vibe player is one of the best.

This is THE best! Vibe player, musician, musicians, good taste, best performance, even best arrangements. 5 star, I salute you from Portugal, Alexey!
