But how is it fair to have all of that love for somebody and for them to not feel anything back for you? Esp when there was an understanding that love was there? It takes energy to love someone and if there is a lot of energy being spent at one place more than others, I for one would like to see or feel the "fruits of my labor". That's how I see it...

But this video is talking about love for your worldly brothers and sisters, not relationship "emotional" love. At first when I opened this link, stretching in my room, never heard of Ram Dass before... The link just opened up and I thought it was playing, but it was on pause. I expected words to come out, but I thought to myself, I should feel love regardless, without the conversation. I tricked myself into seeing a deeper meaning into the title :)

He does not have the consciousness necessary to realize the 'evil' and 'hatred' that he is setting upon others. If you grew up in the environment that he was in with the same amount of consciousness, you would have done and thought the exact same thing. Forgive him, and forgive all because everyone will reach the path eventually.

Wow, Ram Das really helps. My girlfriend is sometimes a very mean person and I understand that it is because of personal issues. Since I understand, I let it slide but the way she is still hurts my feelings. Ram Das helped me to realize that it's okay if the person does not react to your love for them in the way you may hope for. It will all work out in time.

@selflessmind I am going through that same thing with a very angry wife. I tell her I love her and she just smiles at me and obviously thinks of all the things she thinks is wrong in our relationship. But why am I loving her.. not to get it in return. I just love her. So I have become contented with loving others and feeling that love in my heart and it has nothing to do with how they feel. Returned or not to love is love.. it is great to love without expectation. You are not alone.. keep it up

The ego only conceives of love as demanding of someone and expecting the demands to be met. The opposite is expecting the demands not to be met. But nowhere in the rulebook does it allow for simply not having demands at all.

Any relationship (lover, coworker, anything) must be founded upon demands, for the relationship is defined by each person's role, which is in turn defined by what is expected from him. The sudden realization that demands are not even necessary is worthy of gratitude.

I think some of those responding to this are confusing love and sex. Ram Dass is talking about love, not about sex, not about lovers, but about pure love of one soul for another. This has nothing to do with sexual orientation or anything else physical. (from a 50 year old woman who has been actively learning from Ram Dass' works for over 20 years)

@sugarplmfairy6 I was replying to a few who responded to Ram Dass' comments about love in terms of sexual orientation (some of the most negative comments have been removed since I posted my answer) so it doesn't make as much sense now without the comments it was replying to at that point. Basically I was just saying to put aside all the anti-gay rants and listen to his words in a context of pure soul love as the word love does not equal sex, which is how some took it.

no expectations, the opposite of Great Expectations. ha! So that is a defense mechananism. love them all you want , but do not expect them to love you back forever after. So then we can all love again and again and again. Just don't move in with them unless you are Married first, and we all will have an eventful life full of lovers but no keepers. Sounds good to me!
