lotus today is like the best handling car ever and its old esprit is a legend, reputable car companies which names will go unsaid get their suspension tuned by lotus to achieve optimal handling. and it is not a lambo copy only an idiot or a 7 year old would think that Lotus and Lamborghini have been making wedge shaped cars since the 70s. what do you mean by try? don't understand. lotus need not try it, has been there took pictures and came back
It's far too modern. While I do appreciate many classics, I feel that the 90s represented the best styling in sport and exotic automobiles. Those designs need to be improved on, but not discarded.
Yeah, you kids always see the similarity to other new cars, but you never knew nothing about the same kind of styling being used several years before your precious videogame cars (never seen them in reality anyway).
And what kind of a fool compares BMW to Cadillac?? What's next Mercedes and Lincoln?
Because in america... manually shifting gears is seen as weird and foreign and the voice saying it is american. Whereas in fact there are no plans to make an automatic sportscar due to the powerloss and loss of... excitement in the driving style.
Also Lotus has announced they arent using Toyota engines anymore. they are producing their own range of performance engines for this series of cars. First the Esprit in 2012 and the Elan has been pushed back a few years.
@Janusha I live in America and personally, I prefer manual to automatic. I was talking about 0:36, though, when they completely contradicted the "seven speed, twin clutch transmission."
Dual clutch has become pretty standard in european sportscars / supercars except Lambo Aventador opted for a modern traditional one to save weight. This fascination with NUMBER of gears is something weird and uniquely american. As it doesnt tell anything about the cars capabilities any more than number of cylinders, cupholders or the skidpad. Anyhow... He says it wont be a good car unless its got manual transmission... Which it obviously will have. I dont know who told him otherwise.
@Janusha Ok. I guess I just misunderstood him. I thought he said it wouldn't have manual (even though it was stated stated in the first part of the video that it would).
There is no way in hell a niche product, a performance product like Lotus would ever consider a manual just to please a tiny portion of the market that wants a superior handling affordable performance car... but with an automatic gearbox. I have no idea where he even gets that ridiculous idea from.
@Janusha FUNNY WITH THE NUMBER OF GEARS THING BEING AN AMERICAN FASCINATION.WHY DOES ISF HAVE 8 AS WELL AS SOME MERCEDES.ARE THEY BEING MADE IN AMERICA.THERE ARE PLENTY OTHERS.
@Janusha yes you are.If you had the forsight to even look up something, even if you have no actual knowledge you, like everybody else on yt knows, your info is wrong and flawed
@Janusha WHAT DOES THAT VAGUE STATEMENT EVEN MEAN,WHATS YOUR POINT,I GUESS YOU DONT OWN A REAL CAR HUH SINCE THE ENGINE IS TOYOTA.YOU WILL MAKE MISTAKES AND AS YOURE MAKING PLENTY OF REPLIES AND I CAN SEE YOU CANT REMEMBER THEIR TEXT AND AS SUCH I WILL JUST KEEP THROWING YOUR BULLSHIT BACK IN YOUR FACE
@Janusha ah more useless drivel from the moron who makes the wild claims, nothing to back it up.If you dont remember the username i am the one who has and is still making you look like the mron on that ridiculous supercar topic.Your the stupid little immature youngster here.im 35 dipshit and build custom vehicles, atvs, snowmobiles, dirtbikes, etc. What do you do loser.call somebody else a hating teen.Well what would you call yourself, mister 20 yr old who starts with personal attacks
Road and Track needs to get over its obsession on 'manual transmissions' and get with the times. Most sports cars are going to electronic clutches....SO DEAL WITH IT.
If you don't like innovation go back to sweeping your house with a broom instead of a vacuum.
Innovation is fine. However, there are a large group of individuals that enjoy the sensation of heel-toe, double clutching, and the overall visceral experience of connection to the auto a manual gearbox provides. In 1948 Buick's "Dynaflow" (first torque-converter auto trans) should have ended the oppressive reign of the manual box (it was "innovation, no less"), but this was not the case. Flappy Paddles are impressive, but so sterile.
@GManGT Agreed totally, these people are so futurephobic. I guess they like to bond with their cars by using a hand crank to start the engine instead of a button....lol.
@GManGT They don't need to do anything, there are lots of people that want the experience of driving a stick shift DEAL with it. Also, a sequential stick is heaven, being able to slam in the gears, feels more interactive and masculine somehow.
Ever hear of performance? Although the new lineup may look similar to an untrained eye, they each have their own performance characteristics. All of which will be lighter, more powerful and cost far less than the competition.
@jamesjr934 per. for. mance. what is this word that you are so distracted with? I will have to look it up.
Lotus' cars look enough alike that they will eat into each other's markets. This is a business and in business we use the term "product cannibalism" to describe what is going on here. I saw all of their new concepts/models at the LA auto show and it was really hard to distinguish the differences among them.
Oh, and the comments about Lotus "copying" Lamborghini's style: it's a wedge! Both Lotus and Lamborghini have been making wedge shaped cars since the 70s! If anyone should sue it's whatever caveman first used a wedge-shaped piece of wood to split a log!
@MikeStringfellow Are you talking about production or racing cars? In the production world, technically Lamborghini did it first with the Miurain 1966, followed by the 1967 Maserati Ghibli. If you go to the racing world, the 1961 Ferrari 196 SP Dino wins this title, unless you count the 1956 Lotus Eleven. Lotus's first production 'wedge,' was the 1966 Lotus 47 Europa. The 'wedge,' that you all are talking about came about on the 1972 Lotus Silver Car concept.
Anything's got to be better to drive than the FWD 90s Elan. While it's true that this probably won't be as good to drive as the original 60s Elan, we have to bear in mind that this is no longer the baby car of the range so the focus has been shifted somewhat. That said, I wouldn't put it past Lotus to build something that belies it's higher weight by handling like a dream. Handling is what they do after all.
@ranger1035 Lamborghini should sue, I don't see how they can't win with Lotus' Lamborghini Replica Concepts. Damn you Lotus for thieving their image. Why would you do such a thing? Really? This is atrocious. Very Atrocious!
There is no doubt these new Lotuses will rock technically but... Have they stepped into a territory we dont usually associate with affordable, light weight Lotuses. Will their new cars survive in the Ferrari, Porsche dominated segment.
Way to go Porsche for still offering it. GT3 Rules!!!
@edmaluf yes its a big pleasure to drive, but this is the thing, some people like to think they are driving an f1 car, or just concentrating in holding the steering wheel and changing gears with the fingers, that is veeery exciting, i drove a passat cc with DSG and it was amazing, and it can be a confortable automatic, that is the big why
@JLchevz Hi JL, maybe I wasn't 100% clear. I don't condemn automatics, DSG's, double clutches (or whatever the name). On the contrary. If the clientele wants it, the manufacturer should build them. After all, the manufacturer has to make money. What I don't like is that they should be offering a choice for those who appreciate a good old manual transmission. And this is not happening. The manual transmission is slowly disappearing.
