I was one of the crowd that booed John Barnes at Wembley and it's not something I'm particularly proud of (I was 13 at the time). But at that point it wasn't really about him being black; it was about one of the most extravegantly talented footballers in the world not performing (yet again) on a stage seemingly made for him. But then we weren't as aware of tactical mis-managemnt as we are now....

It didn't help that he was played out of position for England by that idiot Taylor and more often than not received the ball with his back to goal, surrounded by two defenders. Liverpool let him roam, and look what happened then...England could have recreated the Barnes-Beardsley magic, but the managers were too stilted and scared to play that open style.

For me Barnes sums up a lot of what is wrong with English football. Fear and apprehension! You can see this in the non performance of great club players (past and present)4 their country. Rooney springs 2 mind as a player who does try everything, and plays consistently for England like he does for Manchester Utd. 2010 we need to play without fear. I don't think the press have helped the situation, as if a player tries something, and gets it wrong, he is lambasted when we lose the big WC games

I saw John Barnes playing against my country (Uruguay) in that England Tour. I was at the Estadio Centenario that night with my friends. Uruguay won 2-0, but I´d never forget how good he was, Even today, I´m sure that if he played from the begining that game against Argentina in 1986, England win. The sad part was all those fucking racist fans that used to insult him just because he was black. One of my favorite players ever.
