Ladies and gentlemen, the catholic church until the turn of the 20th century. Then they settled with excommunication, forbidding to vote or run for public office or attending university, removal of property rights, and publishing disgusting slander in official church and Vatican newspapers and pamphlets. Not counting inciting mobs and fostering hatred from the altars. Yes indeed, Catholics are SO persecuted.
Actually this sketch is very accurate, historically speaking, so, i'm a catholic but i disagree with the church on this one, this should not have been prohibited, so that we never let something like the inquisition to happen again.
@happycan107 Name me one atheist who's said that. Name me one atheist who has killed someone for not being an atheist. Name me one slaughter that has been inspired by and led by an atheist, in the NAME of rejecting religion. You don't know what the hell you're talking about.
wupps sorry guys it's spelled sevilla but you pronounce it like this sevia cus in espanol the double LL makes a "Y" sound and the I makes an "E" sound. so say it right people trust me I would know how to say it right because i'm mexicano. by the way the "X" makes a "H" sound in mexico.....so yea.
Btw, great episode and i liked it when they made fun of the Spanish Inquistion and plus that blonde woman in a shiny red dress with a southerner accent was really hot (I know it's just a cartoon, but still...). That said, this cartoon actually kicks more ass than I thought.
I've got to really hand it to 90's Warner Bros. cartoons. They can easily employ both the classic childhood-friendliness of the looney tunes and disney AND the relatively coarse and unsubtle no-holds barred adult/teen-like comedy of the simpsons and family guy at the same time to make us all laugh in insanity and smile in awesomeness of the characters and jokes/gags.
I can see why Catholics might be offended...it skims right over the part about even Catholic priests, monks and nuns would be accused. It was mostly an excuse for power by secular people...
Catholicism is SOOOOO Benevolent and kind. Even kid's shows take notice! I'm surprised Histeria didn't do a segment called "Come into my confessional or You'll go to hell little boy"
@DarkAdonisVyers And when they didn't mind making puns and jokes that would go over some viewers heads so that the show didn't appeal to only one age group.
ok, let start with people who does no kn ow history are doomed to repeated, is in the history book what has been said in this cartoon is real you can not deny it it is history the inquisition really happen, if the Christians are upset it is because is true thousands of people were burned, tortured, killed by the church not to mention the so called witches, all in the name of a holy book, do not get upset, angry with me check the history books it did really happen, learn from it, thanks
BUT, as a history major who's looked into it, the Inquisition was about controlling the population and keeping possible rebellion down; more a result of political insecurity than thinking that God would be 'happy with them.'
Does anyone know where I can get a DVD with this show? I'm in Argentina and it was aired only for a short period of time. I've never seen it again in the past 10 years :(
Taking offense from a kids' cartoon does not sensible thinking show. Let me guess: criticizing religions other than Scientology (read: the dark side) is not allowed, I've always found that funny. What isn't funny is that this series is very difficult in terms of finding local home release of it.
@3rdEYEbeHolder Dozens of Catholics come in here and admit they are loving this but the moment a crazy obsessed Catholic comes and acts like a manic there's an inmediate response by dozens of people acting condescendingly to Catholics. Every religion has their own crazies that get insulted easily and act unreasonable, you need to stop generalizing.
@Onerom4728 I'm actually surprised they didn't do something with that. There have been references to Monty Python in the show before, so it's a little disappointing. It was still funny, though. XD
I don't get it. Sure the Inquisition was undesirable, and the Catholic Church doesn't torture people now, but you can't just pretend it didn't happen.
Yeah but alot of myths surround it. One time I was told that 50,000,000 people died during the inquisition. This would have been impossible though since europe didnt have that many people. Overall, only around 1000-9000 people died.
I wonder if the Catholic League is familiar with Mel Brooks' "History of the World Part 1". They do a big song and dance number about the Inquisition.
That ain't even the weird part, kid: I AM a Catholic and I LOVE that whole number!! It is funny as hell! This one ain't half bad either....personally, I think they overreacted.
PS-Little bit of trivia: The name Torquemada translates as "burnt tower" in English. Fittting for a dude who liked to burn people.
No doubt "Bruce Bozzel's" ..gag, hack, garg, puke,..."Parent's Television Council" would hate this one. As would the ultra right-wing of the "Knight's of Columbus"!!
Dude!! Tom Ruegger is so talented a satirest. no wonder the current Time-Warner leadership isn't too supportive of its' animation division. The reason the Rockafellar heavy leadership probably are afraid of him even more than the "late night guy's" like Seth Green and McFarland. Is that Ruegger can talk to and communicate with "young kid's".
Quite the contrary, as I myself am an American and I find this to be stonking hilarious. When we fail to learn of our past mistakes--and there are many--we are doomed to repeat them in our future. NO ONE EXPECTS THE SPANISH INQUISITION!
That's just brilliant! You need big brass balls (or iron uterus) to take on a religious controversial theme and make comedy with it, and bit of genius to make it funny. What happened to the 90ies cartoons?
This isn't offensive. Infact, according to law, tv stations are not required to move this. This is freedom of speech. Funny stuff, though. Oh and on the Wheel of Torture... "Adam Sandler CD". Lol
I wish I can agree with you, but the Inquisition happened in other parts of Euope, including within the borders of the Holy Roman Empire. Spain, was simply following a popular trend.
Gee, wut did the Catholic League plan to do when kids had to learn about this in school? Were they hoping that by then they would be too brain-dead to care?
Anyway, after wut Spain's "super" co-monarchs did, all the crap that happened to their children and descendants must've been karma.
No, I think the controversy was over the presentation of the Spanish Inquisition. For instance, the Catholic Church didn't happily initiate the Inquisition; rather, they reluctantly gave in to Spain, who was threatening the Church by coercing them to initiate the Inquisitions.
Further, the Church has always opposed forced conversions, and never purposely targeted non-Catholics. The Inquisition was aimed at Catholic impostors, not people of "yucky religions".
I really did enjoy this show, and I applaud the writers for trying to tackle something as dark as the Spanish Inquisition. But you're right, a little context would have made it not only less controversial, but more historically accurate.
I agree. I have no problem with them addressing the Spanish Inquisition, which no doubt was a dark and depressing period in history, but context is definitely key. I think the culprits of the inquisition were the corrupt clerics and the state government (Spain).
Wow, I used to love watching this show as a kid, but I have never heard of this very anti-Catholic episode. I am disappointed. Having a good knowledge of the Spanish Inquisition, I can say that they neglected to mention many critical factors and simply depicted the Church as an evil machine that used torture to win converts.
In fact, the Church does, and has always opposed using any sort of physical force to gain conversions.
They did. Pope Sixtus wrote a papal bull, protesting the Spanish Inquisition. Ferdinand got angry. The Pope couldn't do anything. It's not like could have declared war on Spain?
Isn't the Catholic League run by Phil Donahue (not the talk show host)? They dont' like any criticism of the Catholic Church (except when a member is too liberal).
Like Orwell said, the future is controlled by those who control the past and the Church wants peopel to forget it's bloody past.
This was the THIRD inquisition. While these did not have the millions of victims some people claim, they did have quite a number.
How many people do you have ot torture before it's wrong?
Haven't you heard? The Catholic Church is the sole source of goodness and truth on planet earth, and all of us who don't immediately submit to the authority of a gay man in tall hat in Rome are guilty of horrible rebellion against God. All the horrible things the Church did are just lies made up by Protestants, who are the devil's spawn. Sounds logical - to them.
Last I checked, the Prostants didn't offer heaven in exchange for providing funds for an elaborate catherdril, heck the reformation was in responce to that scam!
This...is...awesome.

In fact, the Church does, and has always opposed using any sort of physical force to gain conversions.

Spain, not the Church was responsible for the Spanish Inquisition.

The Church should've tried to stop it then.
