This just shows how much more a heavy rock band they could have been, more heavy than queen or led zep , mick tucker (the drummer) is a hard one to beat , and andy scott (Guitar player) and the great lead singer (brian connely) and steve preist (bass player) .. glad these old b-sides are showing up on youtube to show how great this rock band were.
THE BEST GUITAR SOLO EVER ON ANY ROCK RECORD EVER MADE SUBLIME IT ALMOST TALKS TO YOU STUNNING STUFF ONE OF THE UK'S MOST UNDERATED BANDS..EVER...LONG LIVE SWEET
Led Zeppelin certainly did take ideas from Blues Musicians but I don`t think you could claim that their material was a complete lift from blues artists ( howlin wolf , etc ). That doesn`t mean they "ripped them off". The Sweet were an ok band. AND they would appear to have gone a whole lot further than Zepp in taking a serious segment from the immigrant song.
@murdoch279 Most artists have lifted their ideas from somewhere else and revamped them as their own. When I first heard Immigrant Song Robert Plant's war cry reminded instantly of an old 78 we had as kids, The Maharajah of Magador which is not to say he took it from there of course. Sweet took the rock sound to another level. By time I heard Zep (and loved them) I wondered why they were considered heavy. Sweet, Bachman-Turner Overdrive, Queen even, were much heavier. Blues > Zep > Sweet > Metal.
@silksashbash of course zep are "heavy"...i dont know..maybe...you say you like them.. (i ve try to listen x good..but)i dont!...better sweet!! they are turn HEAVY.. and then (light)metal !! sweet for GOOD!!!
If Carlsberg did best song of all time?...discuss.... this was the turning song for me ....iron maiden / priest....just listen, it's all there...great legacy Brian, youre a star mate.RIP.
love this song altho brings back bad memories as a kid, sister and mum fell off an amusement ride in brockwell park london, both got insured sister quite bad, song was blaring at the time, still think of it now. lol
@paulspalace I was just going to post that. The riff is similar, and the vocal delivery is similar too. But I just posted that Hellraiser was ripped by the Crue for Kickstart My Heart....so what comes around goes around (speaking of which, the riff for Round and Round by Ratt has always seemed like a dead ringer for the riff in Unchained by VH....)
I remember playing this in the garden in the summer of 73 or 74 on my brothers portable record players with separate speakers. the pip sounded great outside. good times.
love alternative sweet,,, its awesome. they made loads of dosh from brilliant pop songs on the a sides, and loads of rock fans from their awesome b sides.
1974 they scould start a consert in Stockholm at 20.00....... the consert started at 22.00 While we were waiting, they showed PORN on 2 giant scrins!! For most of the visitors it vas no problem! But i was 10yo So i understand nothing!!!
Well today i'm 46yo and still don't understand PORN..........But i still love Sweet........ The best band ever!
Yes I remember that and the video. The Sweet b-sides took on a life of there own back in the day. Made me want to play guitar. Still do! I wonder what would of happened if they weren't glam and more a pre punk heavy rock band with proper killer singles?
What A Band!! so much energy .. Queen & Sweet were very alike in my opinion, just that The Sweet were more heavy rock and mick Tucker (the Drummer) was way ahead of Roger taylor .. in puttting in more fills and making most people want to play the drums. R.I.P Mick & Brian.
The sweet were a band who wanted to be led zep (or budgie) but ended up being swollowed up by the rak glam machine which is a great loss. the b sides inspired a lot of people..... def leppard anyone?
@BillMinworth Of course Def Leppard are huge Sweet fans and have given them the nod as one of their influences. And of course they covered one of Sweet's post glam hits in Action, which was released as a single and has now been rereleased on Def Leppard's latest collection.
Sheets all over the Immigrant Song actually. Better melody, better guitar, better singer. There are more Zep fans I know, but if youput the songs head to head this one kills the Immigrant Song, plain and simple. Love the riff. Its just fabulous. Carn be honest!
they were both around at the same time, zep and sweet. and probably playing the songs in a garage before being famous, and anyway big enough for the 70s, good enough eh?
@Fnatman What about the high notes sang at the beginning like the wails by Robert Plant? I like both songs and like Sweet but this clearly resembles the Immigrant Song a lot.
@MontgomeryWinchester You're right, and Sweet were influenced by LZ, but even with these obvious similarities I still think it's two totally different songs (mood, structure, etc)
yeah....thanks or the uplaod....i had this single as a kid...B side to Hell Raiser..always liked this one. I remember this well.......i also remember getting a kick off my small plastic record player's 2 pinned plug...that i was listening to it on.

Immigrant Song rip off. Good band but this is naughty.
murdoch279 1 month ago
@murdoch279 Do you think that the immigrant song was orginal..? 99 percent of Led Zepplins songs were ripped from old blues musicians..
