I think this was probably the most mangled song in the movie. The real song is, like, 6 minutes. They took out "God that's good" and the whole scene of Todd and Lovett installing the chair. I did really like the movie, but it's things like this that pissed me off.
the movie would be far too long if it kept EVERYTHING. go watch the movie for what it is instead of incessantly comparing it to the original. i'm sure the original is wonderful, but i bet many people would never know of sweeney todd if not for the movie. it's great that this fantastic piece of work is being brought to a wider audience. please stop complaining about how the song is changed. i'm sure it's awful for you die hard sweeney todd lovers, but it's a movie adaptation, not a recorded show.
Thank you so much. I am a die hard theatre lover and actor, and Sweeney Todd was my first production. (I was the judge, btw, this was done in my town) Sweeney Todd is my all-time favorite play, and I know practically every song, yet THIS is what I've been trying to tell everyone else. Thanks, again!
ok so I was reading the comments and i just want to say...they didn't change the lyrics they just cut alot out. and also...they signed a copyright and all that so they pretty much can do what they want to fit everything in the movie. I mean not like change the whole damn thing but they can cut stuff out. Look at Hairspray..its a bit different then the musical on broadway. Its a movie musical. You all need ta' chillll outtttttt. goodness
I like how he made some parts into rounds....very sondheim, and it sounds really good. Still, it really does feel kind of bastardized without the ensemble...oh well. I'm sure it'll look great on screen. Well, it better.
I know. It's strange to just hear the instruments, when we know the lyrics, when there is supposed to be singing. I wonder if my audience will sing...if they do...I think we all sing the "God thats good." be funny but a bit of annoying...
So far I haven't been impressed with her singing but now she is growing on me.
Also...they didn't cut alot from Sweeney Todd, only things that made this movie more climatically movie like and not Broadway theater. I think they did well....but not the best on this song. I still dislike this one song...and ladies...
I now how hurtful it is that they changed the words. But think about it, most of the musicals that have been made into movies recently have either changed or taken out songs. they can't keep everything AND have dialogue as well. think about how much they changed the songs in hairspray. they only have a certain amount of time,
It just lost so much in translation. This and "Ladies in Their Sensitivities" are the only two songs on the soundtrack that I doubt I'll ever listen to just because they are so chopped up that it isn't even worth it.

This has been flagged as spam show
This is an awful version of this song, and the movie as a whole is an abomination of the show...Sondheim has sold out on this one I fear...

True, that analogy would make way more sense.

i noticed that they never have any singing during the commercial, not cool.

they had a few parts from Epiphany. I'm pretty sure that part was in every commercial.

it bothers me that they still call this god thats good, even though they never say it in the song
jumpinprep 4 years ago
they do, but it was cut from the movie. I think it's in the older versions with George Hern.

yeah i know, thats why i said it bothers me that they STILL call it god thats good

it's not that bad. although I wish the choir who would sing the actual title of the song were there.

well, the chorus is supposed to sing it, but the chorus was cut out in the song for the movie :3

OMG...what happened to Sweeney's part in this? Why is there no ensemble? Why do I still want to go see this movie?

I still think it is wonderful the way it is. Sweeney already made the chair before the pie scene.

I agree. Do yourself a favor, don't listen to Ladies in their Sensitivities.
At least Toby's cute (not in this clip, but in general.)
