Hey could you direct me to any of your videos for a more beginner aspect on scales? I searched beginner scales lesson but couldn't find anything but this, which I think is a bit advanced for me.
Hi dave, Charles Diaz from 411. You guys are cool, and again I want to show my appreciation to you. Thank you for the videos, I learned a lot from them. I am not local but hoping to meet you and your team, specially you and marty, soon!!!
The B minor scale with the root note on the 7th fret is inconsistent with what you have shown in the diagram; the half step back to the 6th fret should be on the D string and not on the G string as stated in your diagram.
hello dave,do you think you could do a lesson based on a rory gallagher (hope ur familiar with his work)maybe an acoustic lesson, and also if i may ask whats your opinion on godin(5th ave)guitars,as im hoping to buy one soon.ta gerry
Is the action on that guitar super low? Or is it an illusion. If it is so low, are there any tricks to it. I once tried to lower the action on my Gibson Les Paul and it buzzed too much.
Your frets are super fat too, is that a benefit? My Gibson LP frets are not at all fat, I just picked up an Epiphone Ltd Ed. Wilshire Pro....Nice guitar and I love the way the neck joint is right at the 22nd fret so you do not have to reach for the last one.
Hi - actually I set the action a little higher on my guitars - I use a heavier gauge string - .011 - .052 - and set the action higher - I like fighting the guitar a bit - it probably just looks low in the video lighting - its actually not low at all. I like the feel of the big frets - the action and fret size are a real feel thing up to the personal preferences of the player. Try them all out and see what feels best in your hands and sounds best to your ears. Rock on!
@staple765 i have a les paul too, i found it usefull when i sat my action low on my LP get some heavier strings for the wounded strings, and when you set the action with the bridge do it uneven so the heavier the strings are the higher action they have, this will let you play fast solos and don't get that much buzzing and it's quite nice to play this way on a LP.
i use some earnie ball slinky strings for the 1-2-3 stings and d'addarios blues/jazz rock on the 4-5-6 stings
Hi, yes, I like big frets - its just a feel thing and personal preference of the player. The action is not that low at all on this guitar - I keep the action a little higher as I like to fight the guitar a bit. Personally I like thick strings and a little higher action and big frets - but again, its all up to what sounds best to your ears and feels best in your hands. ROck on!
anyone know what type of strat that is ? i want to add a strat to my collection of (mainly metal type guitars) but don't have a clue between the differences
The guitar I am using in this lesson in a mid 1990s custom shop Fender MOTO stratocaster. I bought it new on the east coast in 1995 I think. Awesome guitar - I love it!
@rockongoodpeople You are doing a really great thing with all these instructional videos. I have learned quite a bit from you. Keep up the great work!
Hi - we are currently giving away three guitars - an epiphone les paul goldtop, a fender deluxe power stratocaster, and a acrylic flying V - check out the recent vids here on our youtube channel to enter - all free
It is a custom shop fender guitar that they only made a limited run of in the mid 1990s - you may be able to score a used one on ebay - its called the MOTO head strat and they made a few of 4 colors - black, red, green, and I dont remember the 4th color. Best of luck
So this aeolian mode is like the minor pentatonic scale that also has five positions down the neck?To connect the aeolian mode down the neck you have to learn the different position shapes the same way that you have to learn the 5 positions of the pentatonic scale to play them down the neck?
@CRAIGARRR Oh wait a minute!! I already know all the 5 minor pentatonic positions, so in each one of those postions I just have to add the 2nd and the 6th of the scale and this gives me the Aeolian mode to these minor pentatonic positions!
THANK YOU so much for this lesson. You bloody rock and what a great comminicator you are!!! Give and take make us grow but to give mak us better!!! cheers, joao
thanks David, I appreciate you taking the time to post. You appear to be a seasoned instructor. Good job I needed to start this scale and this was a perfect tutorial for a returned intermediate player.
Hi David -- Like your "trick" Strat but I am curious about that fretboard. It looks like it's covered with lacquer. Looks like water to me. Special coating or ???
Hi - the guitar I use in this lesson is a mid 1990s american made fender custom shop MOTO stratocaster. It is all original - came with the pearl pickguard and headstock and has a treble boost pull pot, and birds eye maple neck with a clear coat - just how they did it on this one - take care and keep on rockinG!
@doinkusamongus Fender likes to put a very thick coating of lacquer on some guitars, its stanard on many - some people don't like it because your hands can stick sometimes, but I quite like the feel of these necks
@Rafterman123 Thanks. Yea.. I see it on several but hadn't really noticed it on the fretboard so deep. I generally (and carefully) sand it off the necks of my Fenders. I like the raw maple wood. It seems faster and doesn't stick (as you mentioned). Thanks again and "good to meet you".
i have 2 questions.. when i see great guitarist play their long solo...how can they remember what to play....sometimes. too fast....and very difficult to catch it by my ear..
do you believe that...every great guitarist like vai joe...didnt do any mistake when live.. and do you think that know what exactly they played...or they...just follow their feel...
Hey David, a little off the subject of your lesson but since you've played every guitar out there. What is your opinion of Carvin USA made guitars :-) and do you have to get a Gibson Custom SG to get quality or are the SG Standards any good?
Hi - the carvin guitars I have played have been pretty cool. They make a lot of models with lots of options and some real nice stuff for sure. Many big name players play Carvins. The SG standard is a cool guitar for sure! Best of luck - rock oN!
It's weird because I started out playing guitar 15 years ago with a great ear. I was blessed with a good ear for music. It's kind of the opposite of other guitarists. I would play what sounded right rather than play in boxes. But as soon as I discovered scales and arpeggios, it kind of messed me up. I felt like I had to use those things for some reason & I went away from playing with my ear. So I went back to playing with my ear. Of course if you only play with your ear, you can never teach!
@burnindownthehouse yeah, I don't have a good ear, but I 100% agree that music theory makes you think standard and not revolutionary. If you play by ear, you play by soul not by math terms.
@treishtrei minor pent is easy to play by ear. However if you only play by ear and never learn new scales you're gonna limit yourself and end up playing nothng but minor pent or natural minor. If you play some notes out of natural minor they will sound bad to you because your mind is used to hearing the same scale over and over. But those notes that sound bad are actually part of another scale or mode so it's important to know some theory. playing mixolydian or phrygian by ear is way harder...
@treishtrei i always disagree with your point of view when this argumnt comes up!! i can play by ear but the last two years ive studied theory and it has expanded my playing no end, i have infinately more options for chords scales etc.i personaly think theory is a tool, and the more tools you have the more you man "make" in a creative sense. ive had a little finger picked song idea for 20 years that i could never find some chords to add to it to turn it into a song, nowits finaly finished!!!!
@treishtrei but i guess its a personal thing.i still play from my soul, hopefuly, but i understand the underlying "maths" that makes it work!! good luck any way
@burnindownthehouse Thanks man, I was worried about losing the natural sound of my compositions if I learnt boxes modes and scales, I'm going to go ahead and close this vid
