  • i am thinking about buying this bottle for my trip to africa. did u really filter out e.coli from this bottle????? im a nursing student so i know what e.coli can do to the body and if i can really fliter out e.coli then i know it will be safe for me to take... thanks

  • Would you ever dare, if entirely necessary, do a Kevin Costner Waterworld filtration with the filter? You know the scene, I'm sure, if you have seen the movie.

  • Thumbs up review, thank you~John

  • Removal of the blue food coloring is not indicative of the filter's performance on other contaminants. It is a dramatic visual representation, but only for contaminants of similar chemistry to the food coloring. It does not represent what would happen with E. coli, polio virus, salt, cyanide, etc. Each contaminant would need to be tested separately. Viewers could be in serious trouble, if they were overconfident in such products.

I've done this testing professionally for 25+ years.

  • Getting gear ready for big three day backpacking trip. Saw this on Amazon.com and wondered if it was any good. Thanks! Now I know.

  • food coloring souldn't have any taste or so i would think

  • Thanks Hiram, have you ever experimented with the bota bottle? I also have the msr miniworks I intend to do this test with bothof them.

  • I just did this test with my seychelle filtering straw. It did not filter the ink. :( The seychelle filter is 99.9999%. I was going to buy the seychelle bottle, but now I might have to try this bottle.

  • I used food dye not ink ;)

  • interesting, am wondering how thorough test it though? Parts Per million filtering... that wasn't may parts is all. a ratio of 50% dye 50% water might be a more accurate "survival" test?

My math is very bad... but 99.999999% filter capability. 1 drop of dye in how man cups of water is at which %? 0.9999%

So maybe the filter wasn't really tested towards maximum capacity is all...

Love the video, I am going to have to dig mine out one day and run the tests too...

    Thanks for sharing!

  • I may be wrong Hiram but their add says "You can't tell the difference from fresh water and sea water." Are they saying it filters sea water as well?

    Or did I miss something?

  • Which ad is that? I don't remember them ever saying it would remove salt. Would be an interesting test, easy to do if they said that. Please let me know where that ad is.

  • They don't actually mention that on their website, but one Berkey retailer's website say "the Berkey filtration elements are not meant to treat salt water and may damage your filter elements." Another says "NOTE: it is not a desalinator, and does not work with salt water."

  • I have the burkey 2 1/2 gallon tank, Love it. I don't like squeezing the bottle I had one of them. I just fill mine up and use it. Missonaries out on the field live with theses with poor water conditions, and indeed they work. Best to get rain water and use it with this even better than out of the tap.

  • Cool, thanks for sharing. I saw something like this at Walmart. I'll have to check it out.

  • If you find it please let me know what they call it. I'ld be interested in checking it out too. Thanks.

  • It shows up on their web site in the camping section. It's called a Sawyer inline water filter.

  • Nice test. Any cramps yet? haha

  • Not yet, but then that's like the guy who jumps off of a 30-story building

and every floor says, "So far, so good!"

    LOL

  • handy to have around..especially if the government water supply comes with FREE e-coli !!!

  • I'm still waiting to see if there is a bill for removing the Ecoli from our water supply. LOL

  • @hiramcook No e-coli side effects Hiram? I am thinking about buying one of these, compared to other handpump type filter, seems selfcontained here- the berkey type. in a pinch, im thinking maybe one could cut (or install) a smaller tubing and use this water filter upside down and gravity feed to another container for boiling. good video testing.

  • Great Video Hiram, I won one of those two months ago and have always wondered how does one keep up with the number of times they used it...Hummmm? Anyone?

  • One way might be to put a pebble in your pocket everytime you fill the bottle. Then when you fall in the stream and can't swim, you know it's time to change the filter. Please remember, don't try anything you've seen in my videos or that I've told you. I am a trained idiot. LOL

  • Hiram smurfed the water, and smurfed it after drinking it!!

  • If you mean what I think you mean, yea drinking the water made my teeth a little blue. I knew it was a mistake as soon as I drank the blue water. My wife gave me a little hell for that. LOL

  • I've wondered about this product. Thank you Hiram.

  • Hiram, The big Berkey is really the best for home. You will be able to put 1000's of gallon through it. A very not good but great investment. It's all done by gravity so power outages will not effect it.

  • Yea, I thought of getting one of the filters to that to play with. Bet you could make a great little filter with that for a hiking group.

  • Yet another product I have considered owning. Thank you for showing us how it performs!

  • how many oz of water can it hold?

  • The bottle with the filter in place, holds about 22 fl oz. I think though the most you could get out at a time would be about 16 fl oz.

  • Thanks for the vids!
