@zuwabla I wrote the piece years ago and put it on my AESSENCE LP (days of vinyl). However, I re-arranged it and recorded it with our band PLUM STREET on our CD titled PRIMO -- John Sase
In its heyday, Plum Street had been the locale of a musical and artistic community in the city of Detroit, very similar to Haight-Ashbury in San Francisco.Unlike its West Coast counterpart, Plum Street's lifespan had lasted but a few short years. The budding businesses received little support or recognition from the city, and the area lacked adequate bus transportation. The construction of I-75 had been the inevitable last straw in Plum Street's demise.
@michelesaintthomas Michael, Thank you for your addition to the discussion. I remember Rick's Rags. Still have friends at the Fifth Estate newspaper. Used to work for Al Majors who owned Studio Music. Continuing to write, perform, and produce music myself. --John
I was there in the here and now at the time of this explosive arts happening. I thought how fortunate I was, the politics, the art, the music, a scene like no other the world has ever seen. If I had my choice of any time and place to exist in the world, it would unquestionably be, without any hesitation: Detroit in the late '60s through the early '70s. This was the time—this was the place!!!
@michelesaintthomas OMG—Rick's Rags—you must have been stylin'. Interesting that you mention I-75 contributing to Plum Street's demise. Along with the ethnocentric flight to the 'burbs, urban planning texts cite our entire freeway system for alienating communities, and contributing to our city's demise as a whole.

@babyboomerstat David, I am glad that you enjoyed it. Though this video has never gone viral, it nevertheless seems to have a following of those who remember. By all means, I would enjoy a copy of the article. For anyone else reading this, I think it would be great to do an expanded version of this piece. If anyone has other photos or home movies, those would make a great addition. Thank, John
