With Belief and Power -- and the end of Sex to follow. I only got partway through Sex when I had to go to bed ;^/
No, the depiction of women did not surprise me either. I blame a great deal of the problem on the apostle Paul --- he switched Jewish sin (not following the Torah) over to "moral" sins. So, they had to blame women for their physical attraction to women. For the priests, celibacy clearly led to dirty minds. Ach, religion is so obnoxious!
It so happens, that just at the moment (my latest video) I am grappling exactly with that, the image of woman, the female, all through patriarchy. We are still a patriarchal society (to a certain extent).
I don't think it started with Paul. It started way before that - when men discovered patrimony. The image, and the position of women in other civilizations at that time is no better.
I intend to watch that video ... I'll see you there in about 15 minutes ;)
I agree that women have been regarded as second class citizens for millennia. However, many societies before Paul's time treated women better than the ancient Israelites did. Part of their justification derived from comparative anatomy -- the inadequate penis hypothesis. Conveniently ignoring, of course, the fact that only women have babies, which I regard as a greater feat of engineering.
However, the vitriolic denigration of women seems to have been a specialty of Christians who were terrified that they'd be doomed to eternal hell if they committed any of the sins that Paul conceptualized. So, sexual attraction became dangerous, and they vilified the objects of their desire.
I guess that they forgot that "God" had given them the desires.
I do agree that the denigration of women is a speciality of Christianity, no, I am wrong, of monotheism, because don't forget Islam, and Judaism is no different. The Jew says every morning "Thank you, god, that you didn't make me a woman, or a gentile."
Christianity invented it, Islam adopted it when Muhammad amplified misogynistic attitudes that were undoubtedly in place amongst ignorant desert tribes.
When modern Jews say that, they are presumably carrying the second-class concept along, and not necessarily the attitudes of medieval Xians. Gentile meant pagan -- the world of the Israelites was divided into monotheism and paganism. The Hebrew Bible (OT) actually concerned itself with the history of a people, rather than being theology.
@EvolvedAtheist Catholicism corrupted true Christianity. The apostle Paul foretold that there would be an apostate Faith, which would result in spiritual darkness, until the End times. 1st & 2nd Century Christianity, before Constantine, heralded love towards women. Christ revealed himself to a Samaritan woman, who was living an immoral life. He never told any of his male disciples that he was the Messiah. Deborah, in the OT, was not only a judge, she was a military general. God is NOT sexist!
Again, there is *no evidence* for your purported SkyDaddy, so it is not valid to try to make *concrete* claims for the nature of a non-entity. Paul was repeating apocalyptic myths that were prevalent in his day.
Don't get me wrong, I am used to these phrases, amused by them. It shows that our society is still influenced by the patriarchy's myths of Pandora's box and of Eden, the original sin.
// many men consider their sexual organs symbol of strength //
So true! Male worship of their genitals as symbol of inherent superiority reminds me of a line in a Frasier episode. Grumbling about hatchback cars, Niles says, "Oh sure, name it after its least attractive feature!"
I blame testosterone -- a little is fine, too much creates a 4G. It confers the physical strength that men use to maintain the power position.

You, your family, friends and children are twice as likely to fall prey to predatory sex laws than a so labeled offender.

What wonderful series -Knowledge and Sex!
Why did I begin with Sex?
The priests had dirty minds, didn't they?
Why does not the depiction of woman surprise me?
All through patriarchy woman was viewed as something dirty, poisonous, inferior to men.

"Conveniently ignoring, of course, the fact that only women have babies, which I regard as a greater feat of engineering."
Yet, many men consider their sexual organs to be a symbol of strength, superiority - "he's got big balls", "suck my dick", and the like - pride.
