I was fortunate enough to go to school with David. Not only is he an incredible singer and musician...He's also a great, down to earth guy. We always used to tease him when ever he went to "shoot a few hoops."
My god! I am a Daniels fan but I've never heard him sing this! This was INCREDIBLE! Thanks to whoever uploaded this. I don't think I've ever heard him sing any better.
Wow...how does he make his singing voice sound like a woman ? You just listen to his voice, close your eyes and not focus on the fact he's a man (counter-tenor) he sounds as amazing as the world's greatest sopranos and mezzo sopranos. At times he sounded like Maria Callas, Fiorenza Cossotto, Grace Bumbry & Marilyn Horne! He's a very handsome man to boot!
okay... silly swuabbling aside... doesn't that magnificient singing remond anyone of a great one... Marilyn Horne? Let's just admit it... and enjoy... x
Molto bravo, ottima linea, timbro gradevole, splendida tenuta e buona espressione.
@suoidolem Well, Spanos's version of this aria is absolutely the best I've ever heard! And not only concerning his Italian:-) The most beautiful , enchanting, dramatic and expressive one! Spanos's voice is a miracle and he sounds very manly! But I like this Daniel's version too! In any case, countertenors' versions of it are IMO the best ones as Tancredi is a man! I like Garanca's voice very much. Her interpetation is very beautiful but so feminine that I just laughed! Kazarova's bass HORROW!
So much confusing discussion! Lest we forget we're on YouTube watching David Daniels, David Daniels is amazing and he sounds really good in this this video. Thanks for posting.
No professional classical singer "models" him or herself on another. We sing what we can sing. If one tries to change the timbre of the voice it won't last, let alone carry over a full orchestra. The greatest voices and the longest-lasting careers were all faithful to their own gifts. Of course there will occasionally be some similarities - but that is all they are.
Wonderful. I wish he would do more Rossini, especially Non Temer D'un Basso Affetto. I would die to hear that. :) As for sounding a bit like Marilyn Horne, well, most of American CTs do. It's quite logical - Europeans modeled themselves after Alfred Deller and James Bowman while the Americans had Russell Oberlin and Marilyn Horne as their greatest influences. It's as simple as that. :)
Someone removed my comment - but I will post a more positive one - I am a countertenor and Mr Daniels is the best for his fach (full operatic countertenor) - he is not even a countertenor to me, he is a superlative artist of the highest caliber - he inspired me to sing myself and to start as a countertenor 12 years ago. I saw him on the street and in Tower Records once and he is very gracious and helpful and friendly!
Please don't say he sounds like Horne - absolutely Daniels has his OWN sound and does NOT do that weird-ass mix "I'm not belting, I'm not doing chest voice, but I am and I lie" thing that Horne does...Horne "places" her own voice too much...forget about that...this is superb.
This is hillarious...someone trying to give Ms Horne advice on singing. She "places" her voice too much?!
We have some of the greatest singers in the world who look up to her and her near flawless technique...and then we have the like of you. When you've had an international career of 50+ years than you can be critical of her.
At the time he was at the very peak of his incredible means. In recent years his move to some odd repertoire has been shrinking the volume and drying quite considerably his caressing tone. But this night was equal to none. Hail to David!
Once I read an interview with David Daniels, that he'd like to sing Handel's ORLANDO at the end of his carrer. When he was announced to sing this role at the National Theatre in Munich (frist performance was on 19th May 2006) I said to myselfe, now hurry or he'll retire. So I went to Munich for the performance of the 27th July. I had a bad seat and didn't see him in the frist part. For acte II+III I changed my seat, was glad to see him, but had difficulties to heard him in this huge opera house.
@Veneziaenapoli You obviously don't understand the voice.... We're not listening to a GAGA concert. It's called opera, where people aren't MICed... idiot.
What a pitty, that I haven't been in 1997 to this concert. But now I can get some impressions and have to struggle with tears of emotion. Mister Daniels is again incredible. I've studied this aria for a long time and heard it sung by some of the greatest male singers like Jochen Kowalski (8th Septembre at the Ludwigsburg Festival, Germany in 1991 and his studio recording of the same year), Andreas Scholl, Arno Raunig and Max Emanuel Cencic.
Voce sempre uguale, uniforme dalla nota più bassa a quella più alta. Certo è evidente il tributo alla Horne, ma comunque l'interpretazione canora è, secondo me, eccellente. BRAVISSIMOOOOOO
I am listening to "A dispetto d'un volto ingrato" by Bejun and though he has a lovely voice, I am not crazy about the sound made from too much tongue placement back into his throat. On Cencic I am listing to "Max Emanuel Cencic - Rossini Arias" I like his voice a lot.
Right, but Jaroussky, Scholl, and Asawa don't have the same kind of voice Daniels does. He has more heft to his sound I think (which make it possible for him to sing Rossini like this).
Grandioso! Mai ascoltata un'aria di Rossini eseguita in modo così appropriato e preciso! E le note si sentono tutte anche nei passaggi veloci, senza approssimazioni e camuffamenti.
It took me a while to come around to counter tenors, and David Daniels more than anyone else did it. Is it my imagination, or does he remind anyone else of Marilyn Horne? In some parts of his voice the resemblance in phrasing and timbre are uncanny. And they don't come any better than Horne.
Easy on the ears, easy on the eyes: this boy is hot!
Ms. Horne was quite instrumental in getting Mr. Daniels started in his career; thus, I am sure he models himself after her to a large extent--in technique, style, and delivery. As a result, he will assuredly have a distinguished longevity in bel canto.
well is a scientific fact that countertenors vocal chords r not totally calcified (not sure about this word my mother languish is not english)and lets remember that a countertenor and a falsettista r not the same thing
and David Daniels is a countertenor THE COUNTERTENOR
how is that so? I've always wondered if there's something weird about my vocal chords. I'm a natural tenor leggiero but chest voice like a baritone and low notes down to bass though can only project really down to a low F and then high notes in head voice up to high Bb or high C in good days.
well maybe u need to explore your entire tessitura with the help of yor sing teacher and if u really feel that there's something it maybe that your chords r not calcified(This is called countertenor quality u must to have it to be a countertenor not every male have it and let's remember that the falsettista and the countertenor is not the same thing)or maybe something else if u feel worried why dont u go to a doctor to see your chords with a cam?

4.Andreas Scholl (The Best of, Rodelinda)
5.Philippe Jaroussky (Vivaldi Heroes, Carestini)
special mention to Brian Asawa.
