I'm a democratic socialist. I've thought up my own outline and design of the kind of socialist society (including politics AND economics) that I truly support. I felt this was necessary because socialism is such a broad ideology that it needs to be translated into a specific framework of desire to have a meaningful definition and a pragmatic path towards such a society. Everyone criticizes socialists for not being "specific enough" on the kind of society they want to see. So I say let's show em.
The bailout was capitalism. The banks and corporations were recapitalized, not nationalized. Socialism would break up the banks and return the wealth to the producers. SInce everything is a business today (charities, hospitals, churches and governments) things are only going to get worse. After the 1929 collapse a stimulus package was used (endorsed by conservatives of that era). The Libertarian Party is a far right wing party--all of its candidates have been Republicans at one time or another.
@YoungIvyScholar What is a moderate libertarian? Last I checked libertarianism is an extreme right-wing economic philosophy. In what context does moderation exist with an ideology that promotes a free market economy with little or no government restrictions? How can you "kind of" have less government in the market?
@sbalusu94 No, you looked at what the Libertarian Party stands for. The Democratic Party has democracy in their name, that doesn't mean they actually support democracy. Moderate libertarianism is very simple, it is a moderate variation of libertarianism. Period. Oh, btw, there is absolutely nothing right-wing about libertarianism. Go do some research.
@YoungIvyScholar I have done my research. Libertarian is a right-wing philosophy. The right-wing of the political spectrum (when talking about economics) advocates a stricter form of capitalism which means a free market economy with less government intervention. Libertarianism asserts the necessity of "having the government do only what the private sector cannot do" which means very little restriction on the free market economy.
@sbalusu94 Libertarianism is a political philosophy, not an economic philosophy. They support free-markets and minimal government. The left to right scale is ridiculous and in no way reflects truth but typically Libertarians are considered right wing. Although they believe in freer markets than conservatives and more social liberties than liberals. Left to right doesn't adequately categorize such a belief system.
P.S. It's an extreme philosophy? I would say more government is extreme, not less.
@bolognamof Libertarianism is a political, economic, and social philosophy because it incorporates all of these elements in its overall message. I was looking at it from an economic standpoint, because like you pointed out it cannot be put on the spectrum as a whole. More government is just as extreme as less government.
@sbalusu94 I disagree. More government is following down the same path of corruption that the world has been going down since almost the beginning of time. Less government is a much newer, I guess it could be called radical, idea for societal organization. It's seems that following down the same path that has corrupted the world for so long is extreme, not trying to reverse that trend.
P.S. When I say less government I don't mean tax cuts, I mean mass alteration of a society.
@YoungIvyScholar The richest 5% of Americans get 90% of the income in our economy. They currently pay only 60% of the income tax revenue. They need to be paying at least 90% (strictly speaking more than 90% because it's a progressive tax system). The debt can be solved by increasing taxes on the wealthiest Americans and by cutting in half (at least) the 500 billion dollar budget we give the military EVERY YEAR as well as eliminating tax deductions on big businesses.
@Raurex Even as an ardent Socialist, I agree. He's not a very good representative of any Socialist positions and he doesn't really seem able to refute the points mounted against him, even by someone as stupid as this host.
This began as a reasonable discussion and quickly turned into an obvious hit-piece on the very idea of socialism. Thank you, Fox News, for once again showing us that you are nothing more than a mouth-piece for neo-conservatism, and could never possibly be anything worth watching.
Neil, you CAN'T compare Cuba's standard of living to that of the United States. Cuba has NEVER had a comparable standard of living to the USA, even before Castro!
Why not compare Cuba to a country like Guatemala or El Salvador, which started out similar to Cuba? Oh, yeah, because Cubans have a higher standard of living than Guatemalans or Salvadorans.
capitalism and communism are extremist... we are already socialist, the problem is we have a republic, we need a democracy in order for corporations to still work hard but not influence our laws
@nocturnezero whens the last time you voted on a federal law? its never happened, we are a republic, our laws our chosen for us by our representatives and thats a problem... corporations can bribe 300 senators, but not 300 million informed voters... when the government lies to the people its not a democracy... in order for a government to function it must know top secret information to protect its intrests... in democracys its common knowledge, no lies or secrets... a truthful gov, OMG crazy lol
@wildboy789789 I did not say the US was either. There happen to be many derivatives of the idea of democracy and a great number of different kinds, and they happen to include representative democracy. I agree that direct, grassroots democracy is more genuine and better reflects the will of the people, but that doesn't exclude republics, representative democracies, deliberative democracies, etc from the label. At least it doesn't in my opinion.
Capitalism relies totally on the government to provide schools, transportation, education, subsidies, and protective tariffs. There was never a free-market incentive to develop the internet, laissez faire didn't build the interstate, and the invisible hand isn't subsidizing Boeing. All of that comes out of the state sector, through a number of tools, notably the military-industrial complex.
Capitalism is the government's biggest dependent.
Except, Neil, the poverty in Nicaragua is a RESULT of the American lifestyle. (Some) Americans live lavish, consumerist lifestyles because our economy relies on the wage slavery of third-world countries. How many shirts do you have that say "Made in China," "Made in India," "Made in Mexico," "Made in Indonesia?" Corporations make billions of dollars each year off the sweat and blood of third-world laborers who will never see the "wonderful gift of capitalism."
A whole bunch of average income people watching this are cheering on the very rich because they wrongly believe that rich people are better than them.
Moore is retarded... He isnt even a fucking socialist, hes a fucking social democratic pig. Vote for the Party for Socialism and Liberation (PSL) if anyone wants a real socialist party.
His rhetoric is socialistic, but saying he supports a lot of Obama and capitalist nationalization is not socialist! The biggest mis conception of capitalism is that the government is not involved, it is it just serves the rich!
The scores never increased as bickering, blame and name calling all resulted in hard feelings and no one would study for the benefit of anyone else. To their great dismay the professor failed them all. Then he sent all of them this note: "A socialistic government will also ultimately fail - because when the reward is great, the effort to succeed is great, but when government takes all the reward away, no one will try or want to succeed."
Good job repeating a staggeringly stupid right wing email that has been doing the rounds.....I think I got this from my Fox News blue collar aunts about 20x.
But, as the second test rolled around, the students who studied little had studied even less and the ones who studied hard decided they wanted a free ride too, so they studied little. The second test average was a D! No one was happy. When the 3rd test rolled around the average was an F.
"All grades will be averaged and everyone would receive the same grade meaning, obviously, no one will receive an A." They all agreed to this. After the first test the grades were averaged and everyone got a C. The students who studied hard were upset and the students who studied little were happy.
An economics professor at Texas Tech said he had failed very few students but had, once, failed an entire class. That class had insisted that socialism worked and that no one would be poor and no one would be rich, a great equalizer. The professor then said, "Ok, we will have an experiment in this class on socialism."
@la8erdude Of course an economics professor failed them. Economics is mostly taught by free market fundamentalist in America. For them Capitalism is a religion. To say Capitalism doesn't work is to say Jesus is made up when you are dealing with Economics professors.
Neil Cavuto is just the douche that epitomizes Fox News and America's right. Knowing that logic does not stand on their way, assholes like him and Rush Limbaugh try to overtalk, embarass, and silence people who have the diginity to examine their own opinions and fight injustice. The world needs socialism.
What's so wrong with Socialism? If we were all socialists we wouldn't have big business exploiting the working class, thus eliminating our current economic crisis.
Neil is just a big head asshole who talks over people but this guy should have known that and been a little better prepared to counter him. Also championing Cuba and the Nordic states is just a waste of time. Granted, it's a 5 min interview but he could have better and because he didn't he lost my vote. He didnt make a good case at all I'm sorry to say.
@gerardstreet16 While I think the socialist could have found a better candidate, I deeply respect Brian Moore for going into a shark tank like Fox News.
You are ignorant! I am sick of everyone bashing fox news just because they are semi-conservative. They are no more biased then MSNBC, CNBC, or CNN. Which are all Liberal!!! So your argument is....well they arent liberal so they are stupid and biased and unfair. That makes sense. Not! Your statement proved pure ignorance! Congratulations!!!
@bolognamof Fox news is not semi-conservative they are extremely conservative. The reason people bash them isn't because they're conservative it's because they, unlike the liberally oriented networks you mentioned, constantly interrupt their guests. MSNBC, CNBC and CNN still let their guests have a respectful amount of time to respond and put their views out.
@sbalusu94 I hope you know that I hate Fox news, so by bashing them you are not hurting my feelings. What annoys me is the fact that Fox is somehow considered worse than all the others because they are semi-conservative, or neo-conservative; if you would like the official term. I do not like any of the news stations but hands down the worst is MSNBC. They interrupt just as much, if not more, than Fox and they are far more dogmatic.
Typical Fox news, not letting anyone talk and being an ass.

Will he remove the free market?
