  • Is that a yairi alvarez DY-85 in the background? Love the yairis. Excellent guitars. I also have a 1966 D-18 although not in as good a conditon as your 00-18. Your songs are all well done. Appreciate the instruction. Thanks for posting.

  • "I'm Satisfied " me too for listening this, just amazing..

  • Thanks John...Love it .

  • Brilliant....is this style known as "cotton pickin"?

  • Yes - the name probably came from the delta blues style of Elizabeth Cotton.

  • Thats great!! Looks just like my '54 00-18

  • If I could play half as good as this I'd be happy. I'm a fan.

  • How did you learn this?? I can't find tabs anywhere for this song. And all the detailed fingerpicking hammerons and pulloffs are too hard for me to pick up just by watching and listening... I'll keep trying.

  • I picked it up by ear from listening (a few thousand times :) to Mississippi John's recording on the Vangard label.

    -john

  • really sounds nice. 5/5 from me !

  • I`m satisfied! Tickled too...

    Great job1

Did you use martin strings, what guage size ?

and do you use a thumb pick. and what style is

this - travis, chet atkins or your very own style ?

I'm kind of learning all these little things from you. Thanks.

  • If it werent for you, i'd never have bothered learning any MJH songs. thanks man! really, thanks!

  • Nice rendition of a John Hurt arrangement. Is that a Martin 0018? I know you also play a Yairi dred. I play one too and they're wonderful, but I'm looking for a smaller axe for fingerpicking.

  • Awsome, I'm 14, alsmost 15 now and I play for about 9 yeras guitar now.. Hope I would be just like you so I can play for my grandchildren or something.. Go on, I love your guitar playing!

  • Hi Himanshu,

Same to you sir. Your playing is wonderful.

    -john

  • This is just honest and nice music, with- or without pants.

  • He's more satisfied without pants. Anyway, as always your music is good, lol.

  • Very well done. I enjoyed it. But please, for your next video, PUT ON SOME PANTS!

  • This is supposed to be about my music..not my shorts - hahahah.

    -john

  • i love the song, but i just cant watch it. put on some damn pants!

  • Do you know any real good Johnny Horton songs like I Don't Like I Did or Tell My Baby I Love Her or something like that?

  • You've got a great style of playing, and I really enjoy your stuff, especially the John Hurt songs and Piedmont-style playing..BTW, Alice's Restaraunt sounds like it was influenced heavily by Gary Davis. Of course I didn't know who Gary Davis was until a few years ago, but oh well, I'm rambling. Thanks for the great stuff!

  • Very good! I feel like I'm flying away to South America. Thank you for sharing your talent.

  • Super! I have a little ESL school in Japan and was wondering if you have some songs for little guys in your in your soul that are aching to get out?

  • I enjoy your playing so much. It really inspires me to pick up the guitar (nearly) every day. I would love to hear your version of Railroad Bill some time (OK, that was a thinly disguised request!)

  • Excellent. Your playing is impeccable. Great work!

  • That has ALL the nuance of MLH. VERY enjoyable

  • Your keepin' the music alive. Well done

  • BRAVO! I can't express in words how much I enjoy listening to you play! I wish I could play like that! Please keep'em coming, and thank you for sharing your gift with us!

  • We can get... satisfaction!

    Claps from Rio, Brazil.

  • That's excellent.

  • Dear viewers and subscribers,

YouTube is currently experiencing technical problems with the message system, so I am posting this on all my videos. If you have subscribed, thank you very much. I'm sure YouTube's staff is doing everything possible to fix the problem.

    -john

  • Good Blues. Weren't you the same guy who was playing that Cat Stevens song on another video? Well, you inspired me to learn "satisfied"!

  • that was wonderful sosauto!!

    claps from argentina!

  • Allison Krauss sings "When you say nothing at all", I would love to hear you play that song

  • That's really cool and lightened up my day!

  • John, I'd love to see/hear some banjo pickin'. Can't imagine how good that would be if you're 1/10th as good on the banjo!

  • Your comments are as inspiring to me as my playing is to you :)

    john

  • Once again Sir, you show us how the guitar should be played! Thank you!Your videos are so inspiring.

  • Thanks...but if not for YouTube not many would ever have heard it. Thanks YouTube :)

  • This almost reminds me of the Uncle Charlie & Teddy album by Nitty Gritty Dirt Band song breaks. I almost sit and wait for "I knew a man Bojagles, and he'd dance for you". I just love this real down home deep hearted sound. I still sometimes tear up when I hear "The dog up and dyed", but then I put on House at Pooh Corner, and Im happy again. Real music comes from the heart not the bank. Play on

  • I could listen to you play all day, sir. Stay well.

  • great pickin', but it looks like you're only wearing a shirt in this video! haha.

  • well...can't play...gotta have some gimmick - hehe

  • Not at the end it dont heh

  • wow that was great!what kind of guitars are they in the back

  • FANTASTIC. You're a great guitarist.

  • Glad to see you've got a new video up. Terrific as usual. Question: did you actually start by playing classical? Looks like you have a mix of classical and traditional finger picking (bar instead of thumb fret, hold it classical, but put a finger on the box for stability).

  • Actually, i picked up the use of the stabilizing right hand pinky from watching Chet. Later, I found that's fine for electric but touching the top of an acoustic seriously dampens the sound. I lift the finger when I need the treble strings to ring.

  • These videos are just great - you're a bit of an inspiration you know! Cheers!

  • Thanks :) - there is no higher compliment.

  • Sosauto made it again :D.

  • I've just come across your videos - you've got a great sound there - picking and vocals - keep them coming!

PS: I'm also jealous of that guitar collection.

  • Thanks Oswald79,

That's just how I learned - watching and listening to Chet Atkins and James Taylor. Back in July some YouTube staffer in a moment of failed wisdom (hehe)featured the 'This-n-That' video so many viewers got to see it. I have more guitars but I need to get a few more guitar stands to get em all in the picture. :)

My wife says come and listen all you want.

    john

  • Great job as always. I've gotta tell you as a guitar player, it was your This-n-That video (Windy and Warm in particular) that inspired me to focus more on my finger picking. I also used your video to teach myself how to play it, although I don't play it nearly as well as you. I can only think what a pleasure it must be for anyone lucky enough to sit and listen to you play live. Keep up the great work.

PS: I'm also extremely jealous of your guitar collection.

  • Hi John....Very nice playing...Cool singing too ! I love playing MJH...Cheers from France. Phil.
