I think we should contextualize what moonrage is trying to point out. The semi-circle formation is distinctly MADZ. The UPLB Choral Ensemble can imitate them but they are just gonna look wannabes even if they are good at what they do. I am from UPLB but i guess our home grown choir must create something that they can call their own.
The sitting formation is also done by other choirs outside the country so you cant really say that this choir is a wannabe although I understand what you are trying to say. A former active member of Madz who served as the choirmaster of this group in the 90's served as the benchmark why they do the semi circle sitting position.

Pangalawa, ang UPLB Choral Ensemble bilang kasapi ng Madrigal Et Al. ay talagang sinanay na sa ganitong pag-awit katulad din naman ng karamihan sa mga korong kabilang dito (Madz et al.). Madz din naman ang nagturo sa amin nito.

I happen to be a member of the UPLB Choral Ensemble and i found drjohn's comments disappointing..kasi he does not even know (or even asked) why the group adapted this kind of formation. You see, our former choirmasters (one of them, is a member of the MADZ) along with some of our alumni (some are in the MADZ as well) influenced this group through its 15-year existence, and the rest, shall i say, is history because im not sure if drjohn deserves further explanation. "mqteves" must learn how to read titles. "Overdrive" by the UPLB Choral Ensemble. they clearly stated the song they are performing and the name of their choral group. i dont think "mqteves" has an excuse. she should learn to read titles.

I'm not in either MADZ nor the UPLB Choral Ensemble. I agree with drjohn28. This formation is distinctively identified with the MADZ, patented or not. UPLB knew exactly what it was doing and that they were going to be mistaken for the MADZ. That was exactly what the point. It is simply wrong.
Defenders cannot hide by equating the standing semi-circle formation with the sitting formation popularized by the MADZ as both unpatentend. Only one of them is identified with a specific choir.
Everytime others imitate the MADZ formation, the MADZ brand is susceptible to damage. They have a right to be outraged and the imitators have a duty to be ashmaed.

Hindi ako member ng MADZ. I also don't think tama ang analogy mo. Iba kasi ang expectation at purpose ng kanta. Pero even there, hindi mo puedeng sabihin na original mo ang kanta. Sa mga signature moves naman, etiquette lang na huwag mong gayahin. Mas madali siguro akong maintindihan ng mga tao who've ever been in dance groups or comedians for example. Ang signature formation kasi is part of the routine. UPLB basically stole MADS routine.
Well sorry but it is like we have been "authorized" by our 2nd choirmaster,who happens to be a former bass of MADZ,to perform with this arrangement of singers.We've been performing with other choirs & we never heard any issue regarding our sitting arrangement.
