OMG, I don't believe it. at :021 it's the old man from Santa Cruz who played the saw - boy could he make it sing. I actually heard him play on Pacific Garden Mall in the mid-70s and there is statue to him there now. WOW

I like Big Yellow Taxi, but Joni Mitchell always struck me as being something of a stiff. Even here when she was young she has a certain 20 going on 40 sort of school marm quality. She always seems quite out of her element among the longhairs and stoners. She strikes me as someone who'd be a lot more comfortable in a sterile old recital hall somewhere in NYC, with an older, formally dressed crowd, than anong these 'dirty hippies'.
Interesting point but ultimately I disagree. The "school marm quality" you suggest, I've only seen at the Isle of White festival where her berating the crowd was entirely justified and a brave thing to do (none of the other performers dared step out of the 'Us & them' status quo). As for being "out of her element among the longhairs & stoners", you have a point but I don't see this as a negative...
She was as 'committed' a counter-culture idealist as anyone but yes, she stood out and Id put that down to something regarded as a huge flaw by the "longhairs & stoners" - her superiority. Sebastian in the Spoonful briefly matched her technical ability as a writer but was never as forward thinking. As for the rest of the line-up here, entertaining though they may have been, Mitchell was light years ahead.
Just ask Crosby and Nash - their fawning expressions during every Mitchell performance were not entirely down to sweet memories of previous California nights. They knew how out of their element they really were.
Actually Mimi's voice DIDN'T stay good nearly as long as Joan's did/has, and unlike Joan Mimi died of cancer far too young. Joni too has an AWFUL voice now from cigarettes.
It still matters lots, there are a heap of artists out there every bit as good as Joni. Still I agree with you 'bout it makin' one cry, I certainly was in tears. I think it was the wonderful optimisim that that period of music had. Sad we were never able to see the optimisim become realism.
If so, they must be in exile on independent labels and college radio. It's true the boomers failed to deliver on much of the great promise of Aquarius. But if you're suggesting today's pop idols are their creative equal, you must have a bird stuck in your chimney.
Try these and see what ya think. Piers Faccini, Ron Sexsmith, Missy Higgens, Antony and the Jonstons, Amos Lee, and even John Mayer. They all here on Youtube.
Woops its Antony and the Johnsons not Jonstons. Fistfull of love is my favourite. Also Ben Harper is another (reasonably) new artist I didn't mention.

I agree, there are plenty of female artists who are-in my opinion-far BETTER singer/ songwriters than Joni. Carole King, Ellie Greenwich, Cynthia Weil and Buffy St Marie were FAR more talented contemporaries, and Sarah McLachlan and Alanis Morrisette are at least as good if not BETTER than Joni ever was.
i disagree ,todays female artist take from the past ,,remember that Joni was inventing and was in a turmoil 60s ,sarah mcglaulin and alanis morrisette ,etc ,used influence from Joni to go on and make their music ,sarah and alanis and the rest of the copys have never lived in the 60s and had the song writing abilitys of the great Joni Mitchell ,it can't be compared ,she is legend
Humility is only natural from a person who makes such music. This kind of greatness cant come from the ego, it has to come from and appeal to a kind of "higher" part of one's self. Thats why it moves us so deeply to hear something like that. Sorry if that sounds very "esoteric"! ;-)
Actually I kinda enjoyed the psychedelic BS, myself. It saved me the trouble of having to drop a tab! lol

what the hell is John Sebastian talking about in the start?
clickswitchh 2 years ago
He's talking about the Grateful Dead's ranch. It's in the Bay Area and was owned by Mickey Hart.

John Sebastian wore exactly the same outfit to Woodstock in August 1969. He wasn't spending his money on clothes.

Democritous: Listen to Joni's lyrics!! She is the most "confessional" singer ever. She lived the life - and then some!!!

Too bad she's too old for me these days
Also, too bad I'm not a hippy. lol

It's nice to know there was a time when the music really mattered... almost makes me cry.

It didn't matter, back then either.
You were just high.
Big Daddy
Ps On another note, the chick started smoking when she was NINE! How did her voice stay so pure for so long?

Well, of course it didn't/doesn't matter to you.

It is mind blowing how Joni Mitchell could sing like such a goddess and then stand up and act so humble. She's of a very rare breed.
