@mrdinsdale it''s hard to explain, I know. Those six notes, in that pattern are contained in the major and minor scales, and by sliding on the seventh note and repeating, you can play the scales up and down the neck.
I know it's not really helpful, I made it to entertain myself.
1. If you know how to play a major scale, you can play that pattern from any target note and it works.
2. There are 2 ways to play 2 octaves or more. One is across the fretboard in one position, that will get you 2 octaves. or you can play down the fretboard using the technique I'm showing here, that is play the first two string's worth of the scale and then slide down 2 frets, move to the next two strings and repeat the pattern.
it is in fact, much cooler to slide.

This will get you 3+ oct.
