Its soulful and millions like his ideas.  Brecker was great with what he did, but he tried to carry an older style of jazz into a transitioning era, and hence, millions didn't understand what he played.

There are certain musical styles that are expressive without being technical. It's not wrong to like James Brown over Kurt Elling. Kirk Whalum may or may not be able to play hard-bop like Eric Alexander but Eric probably cannot play with the same veracity and inflection that Kirk plays with. Same example w/Chris Potter-Maceo; Brecker-Koz; Albright-Bird. There's linear playing, avant-garde, swing, bop, pop and so on. Kirk Whalum definitely ranks amongst the best in his chosen style.

I am inspired by Kirk. I took up tenor sax after playing alto for 35 years because of his great sound. BTW the beach sax thing is OK with me. I would love to be able to walk on the beach with my MP3 playing Kirk's songs and play along with him.
