Since you mentioned it, back in 2006 I had been witness to one of my fellow US citizens in Canada visiting (much like I was doing) and he ended up getting fined by a policeman in Toronto for calling someone a faggot. I had later been told that someone could be charged with a hate crime for using such an epithet. So it begs the question between then and now what happened to make NOW the time to ban the word?
