I hope whever designed the sherman is burning in hell right now. small gun, thin armour, high profile and no slanted armour. he got alot of crewman killed.
The designers had a choice. Make a tough huge gunned expensive tank (and only be able to afford a few) or build a relatively cheap, easy to maintain tank that would swamp the enemy by sheer wight of numbers
Yes they knew a lot of young men would be killed in them, but it was war and it's easy to critcise from the comfort of our cosy chairs
Actually they could of made a good number of tough tanks. they just didnt want to spend a bunch of money. because everything revolves around money. so it wasnt really choice as much as it was greed
i would do anything too! they are the best! they r # 1 in my book! every time i drive past a sherman on display out side a V.F.W. i stare at it and say "sherman! sherman! sherman! sherman!" as fast as i can!
Read "Death Traps" - By Belton Y. Cooper - 3rd Armored Division ordnance liaison officer, for the true story on the M4.

What is the cylinder above the engine? Something used for demonstrations to "fire" the cannon?

Dont tell the makers of WWIIOL about how crappy the Sherman was. They seem to think it was tough as nails

Yes, it is true, but 62 years after the end of the war, it always rolls and is very easy to maintain.
