Japan having almost as many citizen and maybe more (no idea of the number) then the US they could if they had wish for it attack the mainland. we will never know why they did not continue their attack they could have gone really far if they had wish in the US

The Reason pearl harbor was hit was to break the US 7th fleet, then sue for peace, leaving the Japanese empire to have the pacific to themselves. It backfired, just as ADM Yamamoto said it would.
The Reason the atomic bombs were dropped on Hiroshima ( IJA 2nd Army GHQ) and Nagasaki ( Home to the Mitsubishi A6M5 plant) was to try and not have to enact Op. Downfall, which by projections would kill 5-7 million allied, and the depopulation of the Japanese home islands.

The bomb was dropped to save lives. The US Military estimated that millions us troops would die in operation downfall and the Japs would fight down to last man,woman and child.
In fact 500,000 purple hearts were made for the planed Japan D-day style operation. No purple hearts have been made since. To this day when a purple heart is rewarded it comes from that batch.
