It's easy to teach kids the number 1 rules of life, Understanding and respecting as well asking questions..... But we just let the TV do that for us now a days. So what’s the point... Personally, i was thought with TV, but until the day i learned Respect and Understanding by my self was the day i learn we can do this same process to children without force or dictatorship... And I'm 18 now! So what does that say?
@reduziert999 SO VERY TRUE. My parents are from Africa and the Caribbean. It's very typical for kids not to even talk back to mom and dad, to respect teachers and the law, and also to excel in school just based on some of those cultural things. But it all comes down to parenting in the end.
I teach in the US and I'm thinking that it has to be considerably easier with classroom management in Japan. My kids would not only drink from that vending machine, they'd trash it and steal all the money. Of course not all American kids are like that, but it wouldn't take long for it to happen here.
Lol If I lived in japan id illegally buy sake, throw all my garbage into the same bag and steal anything that wasn't behind glass or had a camera watching me... *sarcasm*
There are all sorts of vending machines in Japan. (Some even vend unmentionables. It's true. o.o' Search on the web. It's often disguised as these "Love machines" or something similar.) I wish they have more varieties of vending machine in the US though. They are beginning to explore vending machines that sells electronics (Best Buy). In any case, another great video. :D Love your vids. ^-^V
While I love Japanese culture and have a deep respect for the country and its people, I feel as though things like this add to the false perception of Japan as "different" than other countries. In Western media, there was much speculation over why there was little looting in Japan, and it led to a lot of cultural stereotyping. (Like, for example, that underage people don't raid that osake machine. They do.)
I dunno; my sensei just told me it adds to the orientalism and exoticism of a country.
@cloudswirls [adorable user name, lol! I like it! (o: ]
I understand b/c I come from a culture where I hear similar kinds things about 'us.' And some people in 'our camp' I think overreact - esp. when actual statistics support there is more or less of something happening...But there are certainly times when stereotyping occurs - like when it's based on a tiny fraction of a population said to represent the majority. It can lead to prejudices & beliefs in any direction.
@TheJapanChannelDcom Only in Japan... LOL It's surprising that even a little kid could just go buy sake, but the culture & country of Japan has trust that the kids won't out of hoping that they'd know what's right and wrong...and what's appropriate of them at certain ages.
@suiton629: When I was living in Denmark, at that time anyway, kids could buy wine and beer at the grocery store. To take to their family, I was told. I've no idea if it was literally legal or just accepted in trust. Sometimes parents would actually give their children money to run that errand for them - I never got over it, haha!
But it worked. Today? I don't know if it's still true.
@forgottenwinner All Japanese people are lactose intolerant, so there used to be a big surplus of milk cartons in the country because no one was buying milk.
Then one day, a man named Damasa Re Yasui came up with the idea of putting sake in a milk carton so that he could sneak it into the basketball game without anyone knowing. He was discovered when a basketball player wanted a bowl of corn flakes.
@forgottenwinner From my perspective it looks like a "milk carton" to me, too!! Though now juice comes like that as well in our neck of the woods...But you made me laugh: I had to 'rewind' the video & watch it again - and you're right!.. [wow, I was inspired to post responses to people 4 times on this page - awesome topic!]
It would be amazing if you could do a video in the future on staying at people's houses. I am going to be staying with a host family for 3 months and I am not exactly sure what proper etiquette is. Is it polite to offer to help clean up after a meal and help out with chores to sort of earn your keep?
@WiteRainbeau Bloody hell, Helping anyone out is considered a good thing. Although I can understand your anxiety, with an attitude like that, you'll be fine Me thinks. Lucky you for going though!
Actually children in Japan misuse the vending machines all the time, mostly for smokes. But you can get a number of "adult only" items in many vending machines. Beer, Sake, Tabacco, pornography, adult toys. I haved seen them all.
Heh, there's actually a video game coming out soon where the main protagonist is fighting through the depths of hell and fighting demons. The thing that keeps his health replenished is Sake; he can also purchase it from vending machines as well. Just popped into my head when I saw your video.
Man, they need these in the US (with regulations, of course). When I lived in Japan there used to be a beer vending machine down the street and my father would always pick up an Asahi on the way home. =)
The truth is, if the government thought it was worthwhile to bring in タスポ, there was obviously a problem with kids having access to tobacco. Teenagers are teenagers are teenagers.
I thought I was still dreaming when I saw this... Why can't other countries do this sort of thing!?! Oh yeah... People would get silly, buy this stuff for underage kids, or underage kids would get their little grubby hands on it, and that would be that! Can't wait to go to JAPAN!!! Ha ha! Great video as always! =)
Man that stuff will knock u on your ass..few yrs ago went to a japan restuarant..had some of this like a hot tea..nothing happend untill i walked outside..then baam i was down
i was told that with some of the newer vending machines that you had to also touch someting like a pasmo card to the machine to prove your age is that true. i remember when i was last in tokyo i could just but beer straight from the machines. was brilliant on the way home after a hard day!
@davehome22 When I was in tokyo in Nov I didnt see that feature on the sake machines but for about 95% of the cigarette machines you needed that special card. It became a real hassle except for around some of the clubs. Some club owners would give you there card to access the machine and some even had a card on a chain hooked right on the machine.
Same in the States, when going to liquor stores I have been asked by loitering kids if I'd by them booze. If they had vending machines it would get crazy.
I just hope that Japan doesn't get so Westernized that they start to lose that respect and other qualities that make them uniquely Japanese. Japan has much that she can teach the rest of the world.
@1ukjunglednbraver See, that kind of thinking is dangerous. Sure, if you're a responsible adult and you drink, that's up to you. But if a child drinks, not only is his judgement premature, but the alcohol further impairs it. That situation can quickly escalate from self-harm (small bodies are not capable of handling alcohol) to hurting others (violence, unsafe driving.)
@TheDoodlibop do you know what point i was trying to make there. i think i might even have been drunk i can see its a stupid one either way.kid drink in this country i think its just the way we are..alot of parents even get there kids drink and if they come in slightly drunk they dont really tell them off... i just dont think enuff parents tell there children that alcohol is bad here. infact they drink it have a good time on it in frount of them and teach there children that alcohol = good times
@1ukjunglednbraver Oooh okay. Since you explained, I agree with you all the way. It's kind of the whole "do as I say, not as I do". Only problem with that is obvious: actions ALWAYS speak louder than words.
if only the japanese won then we'd all have incredible vending machines *sigh*
