Thecountries affected by the Tsunami very rapidly got the Japanese Tsunami warning bouys and the monitoring systems after this. The Japanese and repeatedly offered it to them before 2004 but they had said it was not needed as a Tsunami in that area was thought to be very unlikely by their own scientists even though the Japanese (who have liturally thousands of years experience with them) said otherwise. Sadly December 26th 2004 showed who was right....

I was in Pekanbaru on 26 December 2004, Pekanbaru is one of the far-inland city located in Central Sumatra.

During the time, there was national breaking news almost in all national TV station reporting this earthquake. However, basic infrastructures such as electricity and phone-lines were cut-off during the quake. The communication was fully terminated.

I was tuned in on CNN and BBC at that time, ... I was so surprised the tsunami reached in Thailand and Sri Lanka caused by Aceh earthquake.

It was the location of the earthquake and the shape of the tsunami. Too far north to hit Australia. And elongated in shape. Most of the force went directly east (toward Thailand and Sumatra) and west (toward the Indian subcontinent) with thrust southwest toward the coast East Africa. The shape of the rupture only sent smaller waves directly south toward Australia. Even if big waves did reach Australia, the would have only hit largely unpopulated areas. Perth is at a different angle.
