I own this amp, and it's great for anything clean to mild gain. Anything remotely high gain I would not advise plaything through this amp. When I play with people I usually mic it and put it through the PA. I use it mainly for recording, and it works great for that because it's not super loud yet still has that tube tone. Some drummers I've overpowered, and some bands I just get lost in. I live in an apartment, thats another reason why I got it. If you want quiet tubes, this is the amp for you.
@LexBravary No it does not, however I recommend finding some videos where people use pedals through it. It handles pedals quiet well in my opinion. It just isn't a high gain metal monster, so don't ever expect that out of it. Look for something with 6L6s, not EL 84s. If you want cheap, quiet, and flexible tubes, this is for you. This gives more insight on it's tone possibilities: /watch?v=vSFYihe_vok&feature=related
That is a really impressive sound. Really clear and awesome natural overdrive for those of us at home and not in an arena! Sounds very clear. I have an Epi Valve Jr. and you can get the idea of how a 5 watter can be cool. But, it's noisy and too loud, with minimal controls. I like this amp, I like the 1/4 watt and 1 watt where you crank it. Sounds pretty killer.
@TonyGognitti Nope, no pedal involved, he is changing the watts on the amp from 4w, 1w, 1/4w, he is using the attenuator switch on the amp to accomplish this
@TonyGognitti Nope, no pedal involved, he is changing the watts on the amp from 4w, 1w, 1/4w, he is using the attenuator switch on the amp to accomplish this
@krajnovic10 Nope, not really what you are probably looking for. This thing really shines on the clean stuff, like early 60's classic rock stuff. I would definitely steer clear of this if you are looking for a metal amp as well.
@McScottson How long the tubes last totally depends on how often you play. Tubes wear out by sheer hours of being turned on, by how hard they're worked, how hot they get in the box, and by number of times turned on and off. Could be 2 years or could be 10! To replace, you have to remove the external casing via the screws on the outside of the unit. Not tough for someone with a small amount of technical skill with a screwdriver.
@McScottson No prob. Yep, you can connect it to the cab using the speaker out on the combo. That will disable the built in speaker and only use the cab.
And make sure you buy from us! Click the link or go to georgesmusiconline [dot] com
can this amp play at a decent volume and still be totally clean? Considering using it clean with Boss GT-10 to provide chorus/reverb etc and distortion.
@frobank no lol i own it and bought it for the blues n crunch gain tones. It will only be slightly loud on the 4watt mode but just loud enough for bedroom practice cuz u have to keep the volume below eleven o'clock
Besides the limitations of the video camera's frequency response, bear in mind that the brightness is also a byproduct of the Strat bridge pickup -- the only one selected in this demo. There isn't a whole lot of low frequency information coming down the cable for the amp to reproduce, or for the amp's tone control to boost. These amps deliver a more full-spectrum tone when they get some warmer overtones fed to them from the guitar's other pickups.
I just got this amp yesterday. man its loud! thought 4 watts would be nothing...im gonna use it this weekend @ my church along with a drummer, piano, 2nd guitar player, bass and a couple of singers. just gonna mic it up. dont use this with multi effects. use single pedals...(my opinion & advice)
Thanks for your reply. I actually tried the amp today, and didnt really get much from the tone knob. It added a bit of brightness when full, but it doesnt really become trebly. The amp does sound great though.
Hey, nice video. This looks like a great little amp. One question - how responsive is the tone knob? From this video, the sound doesnt seem to change much. The colour does change a bit, but it seems to stay really trebly - not much bass to it. Is that actually the case, or is it just the way the video has picked it up?
@adilghanty The tone knob does change the sound of the amp substantially (of course this is highly subjective based on what you expect) from a very deep, midrangy muddy tone to a bright and trebly high end. The compression on the camera's microphone definitely mitigated how much the tone changed on the recording.
@GeorgesMusic I also have this great little amp, and what i notice is that its gets more base it if the op-level is set on 4 watt. And if you crank it up with a "good" distortion pedal its just amazing
The speaker sounds cool, but its falling away if you play it in a big room. But this you can solve with a big cabinet which sounds really cool!!
I think its one of the best tube amps in the 5watt size. I tried many others but only the little terror from orange is rougher, but thats also 7/15watt
@GeorgesMusic hi thanks for the review. I have also noticed that when you use the Attenuator power to cut the wattage out from 1 watt to quarter, there seem to be no differenfe.
is it better to consider this amp with 16 ohm vs the Fender champion with 8 or 4 ohm?
what's the diference between the "Vox AC4TV" and the "Vox AC4TV 8" ? i whant one for playing rolling stones, rock and blues, the distorcion without pedal sounds well? o have an ibanez AF75. Thank you!
@GeorgesMusic And thats a big difference? the sound is exactly the same? i need it to play in my room, but i whant a good distortion too! :) what you will recomend me?
@copech well, the sound won't be 'exactly' the same. Bigger speaker will have a wider frequency response and every speaker is a little different. But overall, yes, it'll have basically the same sound.
Deciding what sounds 'good' is always very subjective and depends on what sound you're going for. But this is a great sounding amp, and that's a great sounding pedal so all signs point to Yes!
i heard that a tube amp goes wayy louder than a solid state am i correct? so like how loud would a 4 watts vox ac4tv go compared to a solid state? like would it go as loud as a 30 watt solid state amp? if not, how much?
Without getting into the science of it (a watt is a watt is a watt), a good rule of thumb is that the power rating on a tube amp will have a perceived loudness of around 3 times when compared to a solid state amp. This unit's loudness is roughly comparable to a 15 watt solid state amp.
is this a pedal friendly amp??coz i tried it with the T-REX Alberta nd it was awful!! but then again the amp naturally has that essential blues overdrive..
That depends...I wouldn't run a Metal pedal through it. And you're right, you won't get a better overdriven blues sound from a pedal. The amp is made for that! But echo, chorus, and other modulation effects will sound great.
It's got that classic all-tube distortion that is great for nearly all genres of music. Plus it's got that Vox tone that's been on so many hit records. I wouldn't suggest it for metal, but great for blues, rock , country, etc.
I would definitely call it loud when played by itself. If you are working in a full band situation where you play with drums, bass, and another guitarist, it may not be loud enough and would need to be miked (depending on your style of music).
