  • The playing is a little dark for my tase, but holy shit that's some good programming. I picked up a DX7 yesterday and can't wait to get into working with it.

  • A lady had one of these on her table when I was making a delivery and asked if I wanted it.

  • @qlindsay

    the dx7?

  • 07:42____!!

  • The DX7 is the greatest pure synth of ALLTIME. I remember when the M1 and D50 came out and everyone was saying they were much better than a DX7. I didnt agree. They werent PURE SYNTHS. They relied on multi-layere samples and effects to make you think they were better. When you listen to the pure sound of a MK 1 DX7 you are hearing the best there is. Then when you add effects and chorus eq. It blows everything else away.

Robert Pakers 100% DX7 is a great example of this on this site. Drums even.

  • how many oscs does this have?

  • @SunLickTree The DX7 does not employ subtractive synthesis like a minimoog or odyssey. Instead it uses Frequency Modulation (FM) synthesis. this uses "ops" or, operators which modulate one another in different algorithms. The DX7 happens to have 6 of these operators.

  • DX7 4 EVER!! WcoG rules!!

  • 8:57 sounds enormous. For those that think digital synths have to sound "thin and tinny". That is a powerful bass sound that is warm and organic even over Youtube. I saw one of these for sale in a local music store for $400 just the other day. REALLY tempted to pick it up!

  • This guy is ridiculous, there's so much detail in his programming.

  • The DX7 is AWESOME the problem was programming it was a nightmare but IF you can it remains an INCREDIBLE classic ITS BASS PATCH is still the greatest. Put it together with a QX7 SEQUENCER, RX5 DRUM MACHINE and a digital multitracker and you have the business

  • chinks make awesome electronics

  • DX7 m-a-d-n-e-s-s !!!

  • Dear Santa...

  • Is there an arpeggiator on it?

  • OMG!!! can you imagine this synth creating some hip hop beats. Im buying one!

  • @drum4life42 OMG!!! Can you image me playing this synth at my grandparents' wedding anniversary?

  • That first riff is absolutely amazing. And I got freaked out by the otter/bear/mole thing randomly coming in at some spooky music.

  • nice to see a demo using something other than ambient pads. Bringing out square and saw leads to their full potential~

  • this vid is the reason why I'm going to buy a DX7.

  • Steve the Buck loves his Yahama DX7 synthesizer! And is there a sloth in this video?

  • 2:17 the T-1000 is coming!! Definitely made me think of Terminator 2

  • That piece at 1:40 is so dark and mysterious I really dig it

  • Vintage Porn !!!!

  • Your video is the living proof that the DX7 can create incredible sounds, and proves that the ones that diss it, are the ones that havent got a clue how to use it.

  • @AlexisNembrode Agreed. So much more than just a Rhodes piano simulation. I used to think these were limited, mostly due to how so many people only use them for certain sounds. After digging into one myself, though, I learned the truth.

  • I prefer the E-Mu z-plane filter effects to the sounds created by FM. I wouldn't mind having a DX-5, though. Not a DX-7. There isn't enough there to justify the price.

  • @gridsleep DX7 2 D or FD is a good way to go. I had an FD, sold it, missed it and found a DX5 which I -had- to buy because I'd never seen one and it was *perfect*! Not much in it by way of sound or function though...

  • omg my head almost exploded!!!

  • everyone loves you man :)

  • Synthesis part , 07:42 ~ 08:55 makes my life more happy !! :)

  • Great DX7 demo.. not like one of the preset browsing demos.

  • oh

  • How the hell does he get those sounds lol???

  • AWWWESOME ! I've never seen something like that ... best DX7 demo ever ... each sound is organic and excellent, frightening .... and even compositions and riffs are extremely good

  • 2:30 it's the sound of the inexorable approach of T1000 in Termnator 2.

  • Is this all comming from the the DX7 and only the DX7?

  • @mishmoshable He sometimes puts some reverb and/or delay on the tracks, but the sound is coming from the synth in the video and nothing else.

  • 5:08 EPIC

  • Awesome and wacky lo-fi video presentation!

  • i think that he is using the keyboard as a controller.... i don´t really find arpeggios like that in the dx7

  • @urariyu other way round he's controlling it using a midi sequencer or software

  • @urariyu You can use LFO as "arpreggio". This acts as one note polyphonic arpreggio. As far as I can remember DX7 makes it possible to trigger volume by LFO.

  • 0:23-0:26 cocain cold

  • Sonaban fregones estos sintetizadores al estilo oldies

  • Didn't realize how versatile FM-Synthesizers actually are

  • 2:57 is Carl A. Finlow "Anomaly" :)

    Nice Demo!

  • I've always got an heartache when I see this while scrolling your videos. Because I know perfectly how good you are on programming and performing, and listening to a DX7 taken to the limits just make me feel SOOOOO low.. You sure know what you're doing

  • Szacunek! Mało kto lubi/rozumie FM :)

  • какие после синта обработки были со звуком?

вероятно ревер какойто ... иксайтер? компрессор?

    блин ума не дам...

  • Man I was way ahead of my time... that's what all my home-made DX7 patches sounded like back in the 80's...lol nice vid.

  • great vid,if you want some DX7 sounds then go to my channel and go to my web page synthmagic.co.uk there are loads of free sounds in zip format.

    Enjoy!

  • The sound at 1:41 is brilliant. Reminds me of the opening of Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds

  • makes me want to buy a dx7!

  • Sounds like the score to a communist-era propaganda cartoon - very bleak, dischordant and weird. Is there a communist algorithm on the DX-7? Don't mean to be nasty or anything, but this stuff has a 'reared in isolation and cut-off from the mainstream' feel to it - if that makes sense. A lot of skill in evidence, but the oeuvre is absolutely dire.

  • @colin5577 you hit the nail on the head with that comment. couldnt agree with you more. I love that kind of stuff.

  • 1:58 - 3:00 is my Favorite part :)

  • I've watched many of your videos and I have one word to say - FANTASTIK! Your playing is great. Your sounds and video cuts to weird stuff are totally entertaining. Really great stuff man!

  • Awesome video. The possibilities of FM never cease to amaze me. I could only imagine what kind of sounds Jexus could pull out of an SY77/99.

  • all fm here dudes.

  • You need to make 0:21 - 0:43 into a full song. Please.

  • zajebiscie

  • I'd love to make a song with the sound at 1:57

  • @ec101dm The you'll probably like "Every day I die" by Gary Numan. Sounds like the riff in this video was taken or inspired by it. There are many video on YT of Numan's version.

  • Music and video are amazing, well done

  • filming digital synth in analog = necessary

  • This is without a doubt THE best DX7 demo...EVER

  • OMFG! This is soooo awesome! Its like every possibility of sound is being explored. Love it!

  • 0:25 .... why do ppl (including me) tend to touch there nose when the kick off a great sequence ;D

  • @oooonek because the awesomeness of the drop youre about to hear makes ou want to snort that air cocaine

  • @oooonek

    because it's snowing outside

  • The best selling keyboard synth in history. The awesome too.

  • I feel sad. The DX7 is capable of so much more and this guy makes it look like it was designed for techno. If you listen to 80's music, you probably heard the DX7. Totally different than analog but amazing none the less.

  • @JamesThorb

on the contrary -this is exactly what is needed to show that FM synths can be more than those dull 80's cheese sounds. :D

  • is this keyboard in the same family as the Korg Z1?

I want to buy a Z1. but I don't want it to sound weak like most digital synths...

Is the Z1 pretty close to analog-ish sounding?

  • @KaslarProductions I think the Z1 can do some FM sounds, but it's not a DX-style synth (Digital FM, 6-operator). Look at Jexus' demo for some sounds it can do and see if it's what you had in mind.

  • I want one! Ebay, here I come!

  • HELL YEHA YAMAHA DX 7/11 REPRESENT!

  • 03:03 - 03:50 sick!!

  • This is great. You are a great programmer

  • ten pierwszy loop jest po prostu uzależniający, ćpam go dożylnie

  • That first loop fucking gets me. I LOVE IT :D....then it deceases...

  • Mocarny syntezator 6-operatorowy FM, zastanawia mnie dlaczego w kartach muzycznych Adlib, Sound Blaster i na konsoli Sega Mega Drive 4-operatorowe kanały FM generują słaby dżwięk - ta sama technologia a różnica w jakości olbrzymia.

  • Weźcie wy wszyscy jesteście jebanymi psami zal mi was to jest cudowne co on gra bo to jest nasz rodak Polak! POLSKA RULEZ!!!!

  • 5:46

Oh no! You broke it! (just joking)

  • Those are some of the craziest FM sounds I have ever heard.

  • i got one based on this video, but i still have no clue how to get those sounds he gets. i'm guessing some external processing which amplifies chorus...but i might be wrong. it's probably just good programming.

it's a lovely-sounding synth, i use it for the ambient bells.

  • I am just guessing that by the amount of videos and synthesizers you have, that you have much programing/modular synth experience and no end of funds or talent. I guess Nine Inch Nails already had a synth expert. thanks for the videos. I have this Yamaha DX7 synth, along with an ARP Odyssey 2813-which is playing itself right now, Korg DW8000, Casio CZ101, and Korg DS10(nintendo, neat, cute). Are these sounds on a cartridge or through a pc? I also like the Polyvoks video.

  • Reminds me of some of Boc's early stuff, awesome!

  • FM is so hard to program.

  • @plasticPlaystation - That's why you just randomly play with settings until you get something interesting. :-) I had a DX21 (4-operator) for a while and only ever made one patch on my own for it.

  • @plasticPlaystation

Get a Yamaha DX200 - knobs for almost every Parameter plus Beatbox Sequencing....

  • whoaaaaa

  • as i said before you should get into selling soundsets. great job.

  • Just bought a DX7 II FD in great condition, new battery, two cartridges included, really looking forward to getting to know FM Synthesis in-depth :)

  • SIck! I want a DX-7

  • Pompousflea@ i use a good program called Dxheaven on tx816(similar to dx7) .. its easy to program with that since you see what you are doing.. but its only on atari st i think..

  • @ 0:29- The best DX-7 sounds I've ever heard, and the groove is just nasty!!

  • I bought one of these a few months ago and I'm already trying to sell it.

I'm sure these are capable of creating great sounds (as this video proves), but I cannot for the life of me figure out how to program using Frequency Modulation Synthesis. It's me, not the instrument.

  • @PompousFlea I highly recommend a program called DXM3 by FM-Alive to help get the hang of it. I found it a lot easier to create patches with this program because I could see what was happening. A lot better than using that damn slider.

  • Hey I need some help... I have a Casio CDP-200R.

How limited is programming/playing with it?

  • @cochi256 The keyboard you have isnt a synthesizer, its one of those keyboards that is full of presets and doesnt have any knobs to tweak with. Its VERY limited.

  • @beatlez123456 it's only as limited as your brain and your patience.

  • @AlexAlcyone good point...

  • @AlexAlcyone that and the number of operators, algorithms and countless other things...

  • holy crap

talk about letting the synth out.

for all those dx7 h8terz, come on, this has gotta compliment the analogue synths. no its not a moog, oberheim, jupiter etc but its defo in a class of its own.

i love it. perfect compliment to my set up

  • @specialistsound I can definitely agree on that one man, especially since I have a Mk 1 Odyssey, this would compliment it nicely :)

  • WOW

  • 7:19 Super Metroid.

  • sloth tiem

  • Awesome demo :) And when people say to me that the DX-7 is crap or hard to program, i just them towards your demo of the DX-7 and they quickly chnage their minds, lol. 5*

  • holy fuck this video is good

  • i wanna make a video bout da yamaha dx7, and i can sounds as cool as his. but i cant cuz im not allowed 2 use da video camera =( im just making sure jexus doesn't get offended

  • dude?

  • @lucariopokemon1268 Well, if you program as well as you communicate, Jexus better watch out!

  • Dude, this sounds way cooler than any other DX-7 track I've heard

  • SICKKKK

  • Thank you for not doing the standard Fm pianos (which everyone on Youtube has done to death over and over again) and sharing with us your unique, abstract and imaginative tones. I think your one of the best sound designers on the web. I never knew the DX could do such tones.

  • The sounds are a little bit... bizzare...

  • frightning sounds

  • one day i will figure this bloody keyboard out

  • good luck lol

  • make today that day!!!!

otherwise forever hold your peace and never learn!!!!

  • Check out the sound on sound articles on synth programming. They are really good. These are proper synths in the old school tradition of being able to make crazy sounds, but like anything in life you have to put effort in to get something out. Everyone seems obsessed with presets now adays.

  • compared to the presets this is ******

  • Number 15 awsome, can you share algorithm number?

  • Algorithm number will not do so much without the right oscillator's frequencies, op's envelopes, velocity curves. :)

  • dang man i been messing around with the dx7 for a whie and i still havent been able to get any cool sounds on it!!

Can anyone teach me how to sick sounds on the DX7? so far im love with my Juno 6 still.

  • the easiest DX7 to program is the repackaged groovebox version called DX200, its engine is identical 6 operator DX7, but with better sound quality

  • @speedtribejp The original is the original man! It's gotta be brown and have two rows of green buttons.

  • @speedtribejp However, programming it on the panel is pretty useless since it has almost no controls for the actual engine parameters on top, it basically allows to make subtle changes to the presets, if you want to edit it in-depth you have to go for an editor.

  • @narki86 Absolutely not true. Every parameter is accessible from the front panel.

  • what a cool demo vid...i like this...5 stars

  • this is maybe the most awesome and creative 'demo' I've ever seen =)

  • I hates many polish peoples !

  • what's the song at 8:18?

  • This is a mind-=-trip when yer high xo!

  • so addictive your videos are

  • i love this! the dx7 was WAY better than youd think.

  • soooooo good!

  • sick

  • how are you using the dx7 as a midi controller?

  • i think hes running midi into the DX7s midi in, when it says midi in the top right corner

  • the sound is the dx7, but is sequenced through midi on some other sequencer.

  • the data slider of the DX7 sends midi ccs :D took me 20 years to find it out :D But here midi means the sequences are triggered via an external midi sequencer

  • in fact he's controlling it by midi

  • ever thought of selling soundsets? cha ching!

  • Dear sir,

You can work as a music composer (horror music) for S.K. :)

  • cant get enuf of that DX 7

  • Jexus for president!

  • You sir, have made me like the DX-7!

  • the first arp sound is unbelievable!

  • Super Video

  • THIS IS SICKK! it sounds like the best fucking thing i've heard (apart from the juno 106 demo)

  • These videos are dangerous, making people buy the synths thinking they will just automagically sound like this. Gonna be lots of disappointed children, let me tell you

  • I couldn't agree with you more XD lol

  • ROFL!!!! oh how I know!! TAKE YOUR SYNTHS AND EAT SOME ACID!!!! You will love yourself after!

  • I agree completely. All the sounds you hear here are not exactly what one would think of when they think of the dx7. Just goes to show the strength of the musician here and also the flexibility of the synth.

  • this is the best dx7 demo ive seen yet everybody else just plays the boring presets this is amazing and atmospheric i loved it,also how do you get that cool vhs look on your video ????

  • My guess would be the cool tape camcorder he uses. =D

  • Nice video, reminds me of my DS-8

Both are good synths but I think the DX-7 has a few advantages.

  • i don't think this synthesizer is a nightmare. the way i play it, i just make songs from my imagination.

  • Is that an E! card?

  • i have this synthesizer! finally, my first synthesizer i had ever got.

  • I just got Midiquest for my DX7. Now programming it is more like a analog synth.

    I highly recommend it!

  • I don't think programming the DX7 is a nightmare if you have also a subtractive synth with 2 osc. If you aren't expert, try to emulate it with algorithm 3 or 4 (where op 1 and 4 are osc 1 and 2)

  • I used to own a DX7 and loved it!!! but I was never a DX7 genius like you---AWESOME

  • You manage to milk a lot of variety out of each patch. (This is no mean feat on the DX7.) Awesome work!

  • the demonstration is excellent but those damn animal scenes are scary......

  • The DX7 is a great synth although tough to program. It almost has to be midi ed in order to get the full potential out though since there are no pots. This is a great demo though

  • 3:34 - now I know where that sound from Orb's Occidental came from.

  • I've got a DX7IIfd (with E card and sequencer) and I really like the first arpeggio, can you tell me some notes?

    Good patches!

  • Jesteś wykurwistym mistrzem syntezatorów . Biliński się chowa .
