  • Where is 587's aux tender?

  • @brianfalzon92 the car right behind it was a N&W aux. water tender.

  • Thats rare the front knuckle was out on the 611 at the beginning! and that guy at 5:35 was crazy.......he could have been hit easily if he didn't move when he did lol

  • @HaloCE14 - 4501 is scheduled to come back this year for her hundredth birthday, whether or not they get her done in time remains to be seen. It is hopeful that 587 will be back under steam by 2012 as she is undergoing her 15 year boiler rebuild right now. Between 611 and 1218, I'd put money on 611 coming back although anything is possible. When the bastard David Goode cut the steam program short, a LOT of 1218's parts went AWOL. Anyone who aims to bring her back has their work cut out for them.

  • Could you imagine that the 587 might be running on the BNSF railroad or join the UP Steam Program? That might be a great though about it, if it could be possible!

  • Great video! Would you happen to know were in Hamilton Ohio, the 611 and 587 came though?

  • Cool. Great job. Thanks for posting.

  • Good job on getting the WHOLE TRAIN not just the Locomotives. Thanks!

  • 3:14 Was that a wheelslip or was the engineer just letting out steam?

  • @cool45010 The 611 was trying to speed up and slipped pretty good for us that were watching it.

  • this i gonna be good

  • Glad that guy moved at 5:35 or he'd have been all over the video...

    Jesus...

  • @kleetus92 I have never understood why people with still shot cameras try to get those head on, rush shots.

Most of the time, they don't turn out and could be took while the locomotive is resting. I was standing about 3 foot away from the video cam on this shot. Almost missed it too. The 611 is so-o-o-o quite when she is not working hard and sneaks up on you.

  • @switchstand He was selfish to get in your video shot.. I rode the 1218 from Richmond, Va to Roanoke in the early 90's..... Did you ever meet Mr Link?

  • @irish89055 At the 1987 Roanoke convention, there was a really neat presentation I went to where Mr.Link showed his N&W night photos and told us all about how they were done and the things that happened while on the N&W right of way. Most the photos are in his book, "Steam, Steel & Stars." I bought one of the copies there.

  • @switchstand thanks for the reply and your fine work documenting this. That'a a long excursioin train. I'm enjoying the doubleheading but couldn't the 611 pull those cars alone, esp over that flat terrain? I like Mr Link's photo of the jet on screen at the drive in movie with steam train passing...

  • @HaloCE14 Very True. I hope someone comes out with a series of videos highlighting the 80s with heritage steam railroading. That would be sweet.

  • The 80's was a great time for heritage steam railroading. We had 1361 for a little bit, 611 and 1218 for a pretty long time along with 4501 and 587. I wish I was alive and able to see them run.

  • THANK YOU! Wife & I were on that train out of Cleveland OH! Awfully late into Muncie, and they'd put together a major welcome feast that many of us were too exhausted to eat! Lovely ice carving ornament, too. The trip continued for two or three more days, as I recall, ending in Roanoke. Marvelous trip!

  • Wow this is an awesome video! I really like the wheel slip at 3:15. do you have a video of 765 and 611 double heading during the NHRS convention?

  • I remember riding this trip, it was from Rocky River, OH to Roanoke, VA.

  • @brimac70 Did you ride all the way to Roanoke? That would have been a pretty long trip.

  • @switchstand, yes I did when I was a teen, I saved up my money for this first trip on my own. It was 3 or 4 days and I will never forget it.

  • @brimac70 Ya, those were some fun days. I always tried to ride the NS steam trip that came out of Detroit to Ft. Wayne. We would get on at Montpellier OH and do the Ft Wayne round trip each year. Rode behind 611 out of Chattanooga two time on fall color trips in the mountains. Those were great.

  • It looks like 611 and 587 were both running faster than 40mph on a few of the runbys here.

  • beautiful machines....

  • Join the Facebook Group i made!!!! search: RESTORE Norfolk and Western J Class 611 and The Norfolk & Western # 1218......maybe it will raise some awareness because NS added me as a friend and everybody on the list

  • I want to see the N&W 611 in action again.

  • the 611 whistle is like candy. the 587 is also amazing

  • its great they both live on, but only one can ride the rails again and again....

  • For a video on VHS from 1989, that sure is an awesome picture. Excellent Job!

  • Those boys sure do work well together.

Who's dong the real work, anyway. ( Is the 611 pulling or the 587 pushing a little and pulling a lot :) hee hee. Your video is so nice and crystal clear; precise. Beautiful. The last segment really shows why they were lashed~up to pull all of those passenger rolling cars. WoW ! It must have been a chore to keep up with those two. Thank you, again for a great edit of your video. =^.^=

  • i think both. they both are great pullers though.

  • I MISS THE 587 and 611.

  • the J rocks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
