Yeah, in the interview on Al-Jazeera he said that he put pick-ups on his oud so that people could hear his instrument over all the other rock instruments on stage. And in his own words "A kitten became a tiger". Also sounds like it has a wa-wa paddle or something similar.

It is an electric OUD. Principal Arabic instrument. 5 double string sets + 1. No frets (like violin).

Many string instruments have a middle eastern origin, including the harp, the Guitar, and the oud, ancestor of the european lute. Mehdi has produced a record in France called DUOUD

It's actually the group that is called DuOuD. They made three albums: 'Wild serenade' (with the 'chase' theme from Moroders film Berlin/Paris) 'Sakat' with vocal contributions from Jemen (a must-listen!!) and 'Ping Kong' All of them excellent music!

@samopdrift Speed Caravan is not DuOuD but another side project from Mehdi Haddab, the oud player. Mehdi was also a forming member of Ekova (something like 1997-2005 ?). Everyone digging Speed Caravan should really check both DuOuD & Ekova, it's awesome music ! And Hermione Frank, the Speed Caravan DJ, was also playing with Ekova starting from the second album (space lullabies).
