i don't think it's rachel and the other backup singer that sound kind of off, i think it's the girl playing guitar. her voice doesn't really suit the song. but that definitely wasn't rachel because she's the one who actually sings on studio version.

just throwing this out there, i was reading dear nate on the format's website and he mentioned this song 2 years ago. i think a lot of fun's first album is going to be format songs that were never released. same with benson hedges, i saw a video of him singing it a while ago. although the newer version sounds much better.
