@oBigDaddyReaper Could be a northern watersnake. People often mistake watersnakes for cottonmouths.
Cottonmouths have pits (between the eyes and nose, like a spare pair of nostrils -- in some parts of Mexico pitvipers are nicknamed "quatro narices"). Also watersnakes have round pupils while cottonmouths have vertical ones.
@OneWithGuns93 Interesting line of thought. The dog and snake were doing exactly what they were built to do. A dog is curious, a snake will defend itself. You've previously had this experience, and you let it happen again? I feel sorry for your dogs and the snakes on your land. Get a fence and line it with Dr. T's Snakeaway, it has finally been proven to work at keeping snakes away (especially our pitvipers). I hope your dog makes it.
i think everyone should PLAY with the snakes and such, but, when they bite and kill, the snakes, bears etc shouldn't be blamed or harmed anymore. idiot people know better and you sissies out there should 'man up' and quit being pussies about wildlife and killin them just because they are DANGEROUS! You people are not HEROES anymore for killing them....
Yes snakes are our friends they do not deserve to just be killed just because you just happen to see them leave them alone and they will go the other way...unless of course it gets into your home then I suggest getting a professional to get rid of it, I got bit by one of these a few years ago and I can tell you it SUCKED!!!
They are very very agressive...and territorial snakes and have been known to chase people. I don't think this was shot in Florida.....possibly Stone Mountain,Ga.
I enjoy snakes when they are where they are supposed to be, when they encroach (well actully when I encroached on them) and are around my kids I pull out my 12 guage and well thats all folks...
People claim these tend to be fairly aggressive compared to other southern snakes, but from all the video footage I've seen of them, they seem to be rather docile, striking only if handled.
i was a water moccasin in my backyard in a plastic pond and i was wondering do cotton head mouth has a triangle shaped head. The snake in my backyard is over 3 feet long a really wide body and a triangle shape for its head. So if you can plz let me know!
@downrazor11 They do but harmless watersnakes have wide heads too. This guy shows he's the real McCoy by gaping, a defensive display used by frightened cottonmouths (watersnakes' mouths are pink inside, same as humans). Watersnakes can be feisty, and they do have a mild venom (though it's not dangerous to humans - a staph infection, a risk w/any bite, could easily be much worse). I think cottonmouths' undeserved rep for being "aggressive" is partly due to people mistaking watersnakes for them.
@DaboiaRusselli You are bang on. When a cottonmouth gapes you should definitely know it's the true thing (esp. after seeing the fang-sheaths!). Rattlesnakes use rattles, cottonmouths use the gape. It's all a nice way of saying, "I can send you to the hospital, now get out of here and let me go about my business." An average hospital visit for an envenomation is around $30,000+ for humans (not so with animals because usually the treatment is just steroids not antivenom).
@cheerrox981 If you were a water moccasin in your backyard you would know.... lol i was a water moccasin in my backyard... cotton head mouth..... your killin me here
@cheerrox981 The head shape can be confusing, because the non-venomous water snake has a somewhat triangular head, too. The body markings are the key here--notice the snake in this video is nearly black, with copperhead-like hourglass-shaped bands. The harmless water snakes are either plain medium brown or have grey and black bands on a rust-colored body. The harmless ones also have round eyes, as opposed to the cat-eyes of the cottonmouth and other vipers.
@galoon Re markings: not necessarily. I've seen northern watersnakes at least as dark as this cottonmouth, and there are 8 other watersnake species in the USA, at least some of which can also get very dark; cottonmouths also can be lighter.
Watersnakes often puff their cheeks to make their heads look wider when they feel threatened, an example of Batesian mimicry (like milk snakes and coralsnakes).
I didn't think this cottonmouth's markings look particularly copperhead-like. Why do you think so?
@DaboiaRusselli Thanks for replying! Re: the markings--Certainly the colors of the markings are different from the copperhead; I was referring to their shape--they're fairly similar, especially the juvenile cottonmouths, which of course tend to have lighter colors, too. I'm not too familiar with the northern watersnakes; I've mainly seen the southern varieties where I live (banded and plain-bellied)--I didn't realize the northerns got that dark. I have seen a banded one puff its cheeks!
(BTW, that other comment of mine should have been addressed to you too, not to downrazor11 - apologies to you both.)

@Lisa4Me2 i do think it'd be awesome if there was a giant ocean bound snake that solely fed on humans. it would come up from the deeps @ night, sliver into downtown New York City or any other coastal city & feed on the human population, that would be great. they could keep the out of control population in check, possibly reducing it by 80 or even 90%. very terrifying but I'd love it. theres something about the idea of a terrifying predator thats quiet & nocturnal that feeds on us! lol
@stayAU - there are thousands (maybe even tens of thousands) of predatory birds.....and as you pointed out, they are eaten by other animals and killed by humans....there are MILLIONS of rodents on the earth...... @Lisa4me2 is 100% correct....we MUST have snakes......everyone should follow the rule; "If you don't need to eat it, LEAVE IT ALONE"
I know some people don't like to hear this but: leave them be. They serve a purpose on this planet. Without pit vipers folks, North America would be over run by rodents. @TexasWhitetails1 You're an idiot Texas. Anyone ever point that out to you? Just in case they haven't, I am. Since you consider yourself such a scholar, here's a VERY simple deduction for you ... if you think America is over run by rodents now, what do you think the ACTUAL rodent population would be without their natural predators, such as pit vipers? Don't talk to me. I have no use for morons like you.
@TexasWhitetails1 No, for real Texas, you're a Grade-A assh@le. I'm truly surprised no one has pointed that out to you yet. Or ... have they and, you just won't admit it. Come on Texas, admit it. The world already knows what a flaming dork you are. Now go find someone else to pester. You're not worth a minute of my time. Bye bye.
@rabidrabbitshuggers You wouldn't want them sterile, how would they reproduce? And a snake's venom is for predigestion before ingestion. So if you mean remove the venom...well that would spell death for the snake (the stomach acids of venomous snakes is not as strong as that of non-venomous species, that's why they need the venom) due to "belly rot". In captivity a "de-venomed" snake's food has to be twice frozen and thawed to help in cellular breakdown of food items.
I saw this one curled up near a lake at the park..I thought it was a huge piece of dog poop at first..couldn't believe it was a snake ..but it was..big fat water moccasin..and as i approached it it swiftly slithered into the lake
@wrestlemania157 You think thats bad, one was literally against my feet on time.. i didnt know, haha! my friend asked if it was one of my toy snakes.. it sure wasnt.. :I
ha ha!!! yeah! that mother fucker was mad! they've shaken their tails at me too! in dry leaves you'll think you've come up on a rattler when they shake their tails!
I had an encounter with a Water Moccasin years ago a baby one.I did not know what kind of snake it was but it behaved just like this one. This little thing was fierce. It waited for me to get a stick something snakes do usually do.I went to the library to identify it and my heart jumped. The picture was the exact snake from that morning a Water Moccasin.Iwas ready to stand its ground I left it alone.
As a boy I went fishing with my Dad back home in Waco, TX and we were just fishing a little creek under an overpass and thank god I looked to my right because slithering along the edge of the water as stealthily as he could a cottonmouth was coming up on us and I shit you not ... when I looked at him he realized I'd "made him" and he shot at me as fast as he could and when I ran he went after my dad who was to my left and when he ran up the bank with me that damn thing chased us. Evil fuckers!!!
@mbecker130 sez "Snake wouldn't be so pissed if he was on a video with better music."
To which I respond: "At least it's not "Bodies"/Drowning Pool" - this song is paradise compared to that way-overused, formerly enjoyable (until it was way-overused) song these vids are far too often set to. :-)
i live in a rural swampy part of north carolina and have been going in the woods and swamps here looking(not killing) for snakes since 1988 and the REAL cottonmouths are my favorite snakes, they are so fascinating to me. Also even here they can be really hard to find i usually see all other species of snakes way more than cottonmouths. you usually have to go in some really swampy dangerous areas to find them. many people mistake other kinds of watersnakes for cottonmouths.
Thanks for not killing the snake. It has a right to live its life too and be unmolested. Clearly, the open mouth is a warning just to leave it alone. Too bad so many jerks don't pay attention
Actually, this video was a great example of how all the stories you hear about Water Moccasins being super aggressive killers are fabrications! If you'll notice in the video, it took a long time for the snake to get truly agitated and even when he was, he never actually tried to strike. Being a Tennessee boy, I've encountered Water Moccasins countless times and never had one do anything except try to get away or remain motionless hoping I'd go away. Snakes are not monsters, folks!

If its in your back yard better to kill it so it doesnt come back after you or your kids or pets .My neighbors 3 dogs got bit , so far 2 rottweilers have died. Ive killed 5 moccasins in 5yrs in my back yard and my dogs still alive.
Beautiful animal, and one of my favorite snakes. Nice video man. I had an encounter with a large moccasin when I was 5 yrs. old. she was within a couple inches from my face. I was lucky she simply decided to intimidate ... flashing her fangs but didn't strike. That encounter was actually one of the main reasons I became interested in herpetology, so I've always had a soft spot in my heart for the cottonmouth. They definitely deserve respect.
At 1:10 this cottonmouth displays caudal luring, rattlesnakes use this same mechanism with their tail except in the form of rattles. Same type of movement with the tail.
Plus, when they use caudal luring in the leaves, it can often be said to sound like a rattler.
to all of you self-proclaimed snake experts that keep saying "cottonmouths are not mean snakes," please stop putting that idea in peoples heads. I live in southeast louisiana, and encounter theese snakes very regularly. They have a naturally angry/defensive disposition and will strike you just for walking past them. My snake boots have saved me quite a bit of agony over the years, and it has always been from cottonmouths. I see copperheads alot as well and they never strike at me...
do you have licens to catch poionis snakes if you dont you might get arested or get bitten by one and might die if you dont have 2or3 people with you.And are you keeping them as pets because that is really dangores and the video under yours say copperhead bites 12 year old
This guy never actually strikes at you, even though his mouth is open and his tail is flickering around nervously. My horse got bit IN THE MOUTH last year. His head doubled in size, but the bite was on the bottom and his nostrils did not swell up. He drooled rivers, and looked like a dinosaur, but got over it after several days and a vet bill under $300.
@ThomasJowers0 thats how i think of it man, it says right in Genesis that God turned Satan from a reptilian creature with legs to a snake, they are just unnatural creatures
@megaguitarplayer95 That is not true. You need to read Genesis again and read it right, and not what someone told you. God didn't tirn satan into a snake. LOL... According to Genesis, Satan entered into the snake and beguiled Eve. God cursed the snake and caused it to crawl on it's belly because it allowed itself to be used by satan, but Satan was never a snake
eh these things arent mean, i swim in waters infested with em. every once and a while theyll poke there heads up to check things out. theyre just curious little things well some little. dont bother me though
turned over a canoe years ago by this lake with my dad and there was this evil looking dark colored snake it sat there for a minute looking at us and then it took off with a bang SO fast! It went right to the water and disappeared, but I had no idea a snake could move so fast. If it came after you you wouldnt be able to outrun it. He said he thought it was a water moccasin but not sure to this day what it was. This was northern Kentucky.
@jimjurtz I'm not so sure that what you saw was a moccasin, These snakes are fast strikers, but very slow and sluggish. The bodies on adults are very thick, but the venom is very toxic. Make no mistake about it, these snakes are inquisitive and aggressive and just because people on here are saying that they have been in water with these snakes and not bitten gives them a false sense of security around them. These snakes are aggressive and feel easily cornered. Be careful if you see one.
I would have killed it......there is no telling if a child or pet would encounter this poisonous snake again......in my opinion it is best to kill them if they are poisonous
@jmallton what the hell... so just because an animal happened to be born with a way to defend itself and catch prey it should be killed?
I believe a python is more dangerous to a child than a poisonous snake would be. Get educated, they were here first, we built on their territory and as long as they are treated with respect they will not harm you.
@MorganFawnvern If a poisonous snake is on my property.......I will kill it if possible......I take no chances with these snakes....they dont always retreat and they will bite if they are surprised
@jmallton what you are saying, is we should also kill all sharks when we see one, because some day you might be on the beach and one could bite you. But if you killed all sharks, the ocean would be filled with rotting corpses.
Everything has it's place in life and a cottonmouth helps keep prey species in check.
I was bitten by one of these a couple years ago. He was hiding under the boat and before I knew it, he was coiled up and latched onto my ankle. Thankfully, it was a dry bite and no venom was injected.
It was just giving you a little kiss, it can't help the fact that it's got vicious needle-like fangs filled with horrible venom...it's love...accept the love. Heh, anyway...how did it go for you, did you seek medical aid? I hear that you can live through a bite regardless of ant-venom...it's just a horrific experience overall.
@omfgmelee u sell them for a dollar omfg ur loaded. a whole dollar, wow u could buy a candy bar or 2 packs of gum for that amount of money. btw shoot a snake, it cant punch or kick. real men just cut the head off.
I think back to what my platoon sergeant told me years ago: "leave 'ol Jake alone!"

@Lisa4Me2 Rodent population in check, huh? If that's the case, can we sterilize a few of of these and then let them loose in the NYC subway system?
rabidrabbitshuggers 3 months ago
@rabidrabbitshuggers You wouldn't want them sterile, how would they reproduce? And a snake's venom is for predigestion before ingestion. So if you mean remove the venom...well that would spell death for the snake (the stomach acids of venomous snakes is not as strong as that of non-venomous species, that's why they need the venom) due to "belly rot". In captivity a "de-venomed" snake's food has to be twice frozen and thawed to help in cellular breakdown of food items.

I had an encounter with a Water Moccasin years ago a baby one.I did not know what kind of snake it was but it behaved just like this one. This little thing was fierce. It waited for me to get a stick something snakes do usually do.I went to the library to identify it and my heart jumped. The picture was the exact snake from that morning a Water Moccasin.Iwas ready to stand its ground I left it alone.

i live in a rural swampy part of north carolina and have been going in the woods and swamps here looking(not killing) for snakes since 1988 and the REAL cottonmouths are my favorite snakes, they are so fascinating to me. Also even here they can be really hard to find i usually see all other species of snakes way more than cottonmouths. you usually have to go in some really swampy dangerous areas to find them. many people mistake other kinds of watersnakes for cottonmouths.

@ThomasJowers0 thats how i think of it man, it says right in Genesis that God turned Satan from a reptilian creature with legs to a snake, they are just unnatural creatures
megaguitarplayer95 1 year ago
@megaguitarplayer95 That is not true. You need to read Genesis again and read it right, and not what someone told you. God didn't tirn satan into a snake. LOL... According to Genesis, Satan entered into the snake and beguiled Eve. God cursed the snake and caused it to crawl on it's belly because it allowed itself to be used by satan, but Satan was never a snake

turned over a canoe years ago by this lake with my dad and there was this evil looking dark colored snake it sat there for a minute looking at us and then it took off with a bang SO fast! It went right to the water and disappeared, but I had no idea a snake could move so fast. If it came after you you wouldnt be able to outrun it. He said he thought it was a water moccasin but not sure to this day what it was. This was northern Kentucky.
jimjurtz 1 year ago
@jimjurtz I'm not so sure that what you saw was a moccasin, These snakes are fast strikers, but very slow and sluggish. The bodies on adults are very thick, but the venom is very toxic. Make no mistake about it, these snakes are inquisitive and aggressive and just because people on here are saying that they have been in water with these snakes and not bitten gives them a false sense of security around them. These snakes are aggressive and feel easily cornered. Be careful if you see one.
SCONIERS2007 1 year ago
I would have killed it......there is no telling if a child or pet would encounter this poisonous snake again......in my opinion it is best to kill them if they are poisonous
jmallton 1 year ago
@jmallton what the hell... so just because an animal happened to be born with a way to defend itself and catch prey it should be killed?
I believe a python is more dangerous to a child than a poisonous snake would be. Get educated, they were here first, we built on their territory and as long as they are treated with respect they will not harm you.
MorganFawnvern 1 year ago
@MorganFawnvern If a poisonous snake is on my property.......I will kill it if possible......I take no chances with these snakes....they dont always retreat and they will bite if they are surprised
jmallton 1 year ago
@jmallton how about you call Animal Control... you know.. the government office dedicated to helping people with wild animals?
They trap them safely and move them out of harms way and release them in a place where humans don't usually come in contact.
MorganFawnvern 1 year ago
@jmallton what you are saying, is we should also kill all sharks when we see one, because some day you might be on the beach and one could bite you. But if you killed all sharks, the ocean would be filled with rotting corpses.
Everything has it's place in life and a cottonmouth helps keep prey species in check.
