  • i dont see cockroach2008s comment

  • Comment removed

  • these locomotives are gonna look nice once they have their cosmetic restoratioin

  • hey trainboy94 you rock P.S. 117x25 is 2925!

  • there is quite a bit of difrences between the classes my grand fathere also worked for the sante fe

  • the 2900 where much heavyer then the 3775 class

  • 3759 was in bettere shape then 3751

  • @chism26 shes in kingman.

  • actluley I think the 2900 where the finest machines ever made

  • They were there 4 weeks ago

  • Both of those locos look pretty good! You should have seen the deplorable condition 3751 was in before it was restored. It was on display for decades and vandalized. Obviously the boiler plating was removed on these. At one point 3751 looked just like these did, while it was awaiting restoration. Sure hope these get the same treatment. If I'm not mistaken, the 5021 was called the Madam Queen, and was scheduled for restoration when removed from New Mexico..

  • Jerry Jacobsen should get them, at least he cares about the steam locos and tries to preserve them

  • 2925 has a trs model

  • You can see both of these locomotives on Google maps 45 degree aerial photo view. They're on the east bank of the Sacramento river, just north of where the 305 crosses it. Shame to see them rusting away there.

  • Why did AT&SF have to give these locomotives to the state of California? Why couldnt they have given them to someone who would take care of them?

  • @stallard17r there used to be in New Mexico

  • @trainboy94 yea that was when they were still in ATSF care.

  • @stallard17r Sadly they dont have room to put them in the museum building though I wish they could be put in the Sacramento Shops and be repainted. Also 2925 was a canidate for the American Freedom Train that 4449 pulled.

  • These two were over at the Sac Shops a couple years ago, sitting right in front of the old turntable pit, which is in pretty bad shape. Saw it overhead on google maps, the overhead pictures on there are usually from 2007-08.

  • where are these locomotives being stored?

  • At Clunie siding at the California State Railroad Museum

  • those are real huge mofo's

  • I heard that ATSF #5021 will be rebuild again! Is it cosmetic restoration or operational restoration?

  • damn you sound like my friend Jesse

  • Word had it that the 5011 class 2-10-4's were the most powerful 2 cylinder locomotives ever built. SP 5000's and UP 4-12-2's were three cylinder, anything larger were articulateds.

  • Both of these engines were about the last steam used by SF in 1957.They would restore pretty nicely. The stuff that looks like cement is really a concrete insulation that has been removed mostly as per asbestos desposal rules. That's the nasty part of steam restoration is the haz mat disposal.Interesting trivia- the surviving SP 500 class 4-10-2 is also numbered 5021.

  • I don't get the difference between Santa Fe's 3700 clas 4-8-4's and the 2900 class 4-8-4's.

  • @ThomasRivette One of the only differences is that the 2900 class locomotives were built in the middle of ww2 and had to be made with slightly heavier parts.

  • @ThomasRivette There's no differance between the two classes. My grandfather worked for the Santa Fe back in the 1940's and he told me that it had to do more with where on the system they were assigned. I haven't found anything to deny it or support it either. It just that he worked mostly on the 3700's in Arizona and the 2900's were more based in Texas and Okalahoma

  • Is it true that they're gonna return 5021 to service?

  • I haven't heard anything

  • CoasterFan2105

I highly doubt it. she's WAY too big for any regular passenger service there. maybe Santa Fe 1010?

  • They are painted primer red and aren't that rusty

  • What does cosmetic restoration mean?

  • it means the exterior is restored

  • Acctualy, I have a better idea, the Friends of California AT&SF steam. That way both 2925 & 5021 will be restored.

  • I should form the Friends of AT&SF 2925.

  • There's a lot more wrong with it than the bell dude. If you wanted to run it, you'd need all new flues, piping and bearings.

  • I want one real bad, do you know how many are left? with the same drive wheels and rods as the 5021

  • this is in my top two as my favorite locomotives, the big boy comes first then this one.

  • Is it just me or does it look like 5021 has 2 smoke stacks like 844 & 3985?

  • it has one

  • i heard 1 of the trains pulld the sainta fwe supper chief. but im not sher.

  • are thes the steam trains by the old sacromento state raillrode museam? becaus if thay r-are the musieam wanth to reastor them in about 2 years.

  • yep these are the ones

  • Hey Trainboy94,

A little word of caution for you. There's this idiot youtube user called Cockroach2008 and when ever he see's videos with steam engines in it, he says things like "these things are ready for the junkyard" and what ever.

What ever you do, don't let him see this one, as soon as he see's how rusty they are, he's gonna come for them, cause he own' s a junkyard.

don't let him see this video.

  • i have seen him a couple times hating the steams.. Thats what block is for! Ona good note, those are 2 very sexy trains. I have a northern 4-8-4 Ho scale. One of my fav steams. I know they are restoring a northern 4-8-4 right now near New MExico for its 100 birthday.

  • I did indeed block him but that was about a month ago. I'm sure alot of you loyal steam fans have blocked him but still that little Fucker has not gone away yet.

    I hate him.

  • He'll go away eventually. If we don't listen to his crap and STOp posting COMMENTS ON HIS CHANNEL. Just ignore him and he will go away.

  • What does block do anyway?

  • keeps people from watching your videos

  • trainboy94

no, block keeps people from commenting on your videos.

  • Cockroach2008 is full of shit!

  • @TheSteamLocomotive Don't waste you energy on cockroach. He has to be a fake that likes to work up railfans. He seems to know very like about scrapping and about railroad equipment.

  • @ThomasRivette Cockroach2008 doesn't even own a junkyard. He is lieing about everythibng he says, plus he doesn't make any sence. He just some 25 yr old Fatass who lives in his mom's basement. All you need to do is block him. That's all there is to it.

  • He's acctualy 60 years old.

  • Let me guess it says that on his profile. If it isn't there can you tell me where you got that info.

  • its on his profile

  • @Jared1452 What makes you so sure that he's lying?

  • Well, that's what most trools do, ya know.

  • There wouldn't be many places you could run the 5021, she's far too heavy but more importantly has too long a wheelbase driver frame.

The 5021 and 2925 were considered for excursion service by the Santa Fe in the 1970s/80s (like Union Pacific does with their steamers), which is why the two were stored. Santa Fe changed their minds and they were donated to this museum. Do a google search for 'Santa Fe Subjects', you'll find some information on these two monsters.

  • @Politcalamity UP Challanger 3985 is heavier and they run quite abit, why can't BNSF run 5021?

  • @Jared1452 The 5021 has a much larger rigid wheelbase from the front driver to the rear driver than the challenger. This is why UP won't run a Big Boy. Most trackage these days is built with diesels in mind, which have a much more narrow turn radius. A more minor issue is that a steam locomotive has a 'hammering' action on the rails when the rods reach bottom quarter. The 5021's weight combined with its monstrous wheelbase would make her less able to negotiate modern trackage.

  • @Politcalamity They say they would bring her back in steam in a few years. I'm a fan of 2-10-4's.

  • @Jared1452 I don't mean to come across like a jerk, but may I ask who 'they' is? I see nothing about the 5021 being restored on CRM's website. I just try to keep things realistic with steam restorations, just because I've seen too many projects like this one get aborted before they even start. Or worse, aborted in the middle of the restoration when the locomotive is in pieces.

  • @Politcalamity I understand, someone did tell me though, he was a friend of my cousin's, He told me they were plannign to restore 5021, but he never said who was. Seeing the 5021 in steam however, would be a great thing to see. I do see what you are saying, It could happen or it could not, we just have to wait and see.

  • I talked to Matt Austin Him Self In June, I asked him if its a go for 5021 to be restored, he Said at this time, no, there is not enough funding right now, but he also said, she is in fact in better shape then 2925, last time he said he inspected 5021, he told me she just needs as fallows

    1. new fittings,

    2. new cylinders

    3, new siderods and wheels

    4, new boiler tubes

then shes able to be fully restored, so shes in better shape then you think

  • dude there is cement in her wheels thats terrible

  • they sit all day year after year, are they restroing them, it looks like it will cost a lot, i would say well over 1 million.

  • wat railroad is in this area? your should tell the railroad about restoring them

  • Well UP is my local railroad, w/ BNSF runthroughs

  • so are they restoring both locomotives? or just one?

  • they say maybe just 1 it sucks

  • Boiler jackets MIA? Well I guess nothing about these pigs are in action, but u get my point.

  • Great video by the way. Only when it comes to steam engines you don't say "it", say "she" or "her".

  • I say she or her in some of my steam videos

  • That's good.

  • long ago 2925 was located in a roundhouse in Belen, NM. it was also part of the 2900 class and they were the heaviest straight passenger locomotives ever built not to mention the longest. Also had a tractive effort of about 79,960lbs

  • well, BNSF is restoring 5021, i asked them to and they are, i talked to matt austin about it as well

  • dude COME ON WHY NOT #2925 IT WOULD BE SO MUCH COOLER AND SHES IN BETTER SHAPE

  • I agree with you, Long Live The 2925.

Maybe I can talk to the Golden Gate Railroad Museum about restoring her in the future.

  • thank u i dont care who restores it as long as it reoperates

  • Same here, although it would be cool to have GGRM restore her, we have tons of SP equipment and one UP RPO car, but we have zillch Santa Fe equipment.

By the way, you should check out the rest of my videos.

  • when will the 0-6-0 be done and where will it operate

  • I wish I could tell you, but the State Belt 4 is actually not part of GGRM, its part of San Francisco Trains Inc.

I'll give you the web site on your profile.

  • o ok

  • o ok

  • @wippydobo321 Go look up ATSF 2926 on google, they are restoring one of these brutes, just not the 2925.

  • If the 2925 is ever restored, she should run a doubleheader with SP 4449 to Richmond, California.

  • Both should run with 4449. Then we have a tripleheader :D.

  • I prefer 2925 more

  • when will they start work on either one

  • 2925 doesn't look like it's in very good shape. Here in Pueblo, CO, we have ATSF 2912 and it's not looking that much better, The last time I heard, to get her barking steam again would cost about $4 Million. I agree completely that both of the steamers shown in the video need to be restored and running again.

  • I mean is good shape COSMETICALLY

  • shes in SHITTY shape.........5021's cylenders are filled with cement.....2925 MAY run again...and shes a DUEL serves

i am building a foundation to restore ATLEST 5021 to running order.....my one keep sake from her i found in top of her tender....a nut a bolt

  • CEMENT! Who would be so stupid as to do such a thing?

  • i would love to see them be up and running again

  • Hey when did they move them there? I remeber when they were near the turntable in the yard.

  • Recently, probably in March

  • Cosemetic restoation for sure now

  • Heard rumor the 5021 may be looking for new home my group would love to have her if she was. Shame to see her sit but guess it's better then the other option

  • That was nice to see them again, I was attending collage in Flagstaff when the Santa Fe donated that equipment. I got to watch it come thru town, quite impressive. Check out the 2926 in Albuquerque, she is well underway for operational restoration. The group is doing a fantastic job.

  • These two locomotives are to go into the proposed Railroad Technology Museum, as well as the cars behind them. I doubt they will ever run again.

  • I know about the Technology Museum, but I've heard BNSF wants to get a hold of 2925 so they could start a steam program, and I said, COSMETIC restoration.
