Santa Fe 3751 returned to the rails in 2002 after an absence of 3 years. They gave her a new 6 chime whistle. It's awesome! We also have another Santa Fe steam locomotive, still running. Her number is 3415. People also made new miniature live steam Santa Fe locomotives like 2916 and 3776. So, we're doing pretty well on keeping Santa Fe steam locomotives, running. :)
Both of those locos look pretty good! You should have seen the deplorable condition 3751 was in before it was restored. It was on display for decades and vandalized. Obviously the boiler plating was removed on these. At one point 3751 looked just like these did, while it was awaiting restoration. Sure hope these get the same treatment. If I'm not mistaken, the 5021 was called the Madam Queen, and was scheduled for restoration when removed from New Mexico..
You can see both of these locomotives on Google maps 45 degree aerial photo view. They're on the east bank of the Sacramento river, just north of where the 305 crosses it. Shame to see them rusting away there.
@stallard17r Sadly they dont have room to put them in the museum building though I wish they could be put in the Sacramento Shops and be repainted. Also 2925 was a canidate for the American Freedom Train that 4449 pulled.
These two were over at the Sac Shops a couple years ago, sitting right in front of the old turntable pit, which is in pretty bad shape. Saw it overhead on google maps, the overhead pictures on there are usually from 2007-08.
Word had it that the 5011 class 2-10-4's were the most powerful 2 cylinder locomotives ever built. SP 5000's and UP 4-12-2's were three cylinder, anything larger were articulateds.
Both of these engines were about the last steam used by SF in 1957.They would restore pretty nicely. The stuff that looks like cement is really a concrete insulation that has been removed mostly as per asbestos desposal rules. That's the nasty part of steam restoration is the haz mat disposal.Interesting trivia- the surviving SP 500 class 4-10-2 is also numbered 5021.
@ThomasRivette One of the only differences is that the 2900 class locomotives were built in the middle of ww2 and had to be made with slightly heavier parts.
@ThomasRivette There's no differance between the two classes. My grandfather worked for the Santa Fe back in the 1940's and he told me that it had to do more with where on the system they were assigned. I haven't found anything to deny it or support it either. It just that he worked mostly on the 3700's in Arizona and the 2900's were more based in Texas and Okalahoma
A little word of caution for you. There's this idiot youtube user called Cockroach2008 and when ever he see's videos with steam engines in it, he says things like "these things are ready for the junkyard" and what ever.
What ever you do, don't let him see this one, as soon as he see's how rusty they are, he's gonna come for them, cause he own' s a junkyard.
i have seen him a couple times hating the steams.. Thats what block is for! Ona good note, those are 2 very sexy trains. I have a northern 4-8-4 Ho scale. One of my fav steams. I know they are restoring a northern 4-8-4 right now near New MExico for its 100 birthday.
I did indeed block him but that was about a month ago. I'm sure alot of you loyal steam fans have blocked him but still that little Fucker has not gone away yet.
@TheSteamLocomotive Don't waste you energy on cockroach. He has to be a fake that likes to work up railfans. He seems to know very like about scrapping and about railroad equipment.
@ThomasRivette Cockroach2008 doesn't even own a junkyard. He is lieing about everythibng he says, plus he doesn't make any sence. He just some 25 yr old Fatass who lives in his mom's basement. All you need to do is block him. That's all there is to it.
There wouldn't be many places you could run the 5021, she's far too heavy but more importantly has too long a wheelbase driver frame.
The 5021 and 2925 were considered for excursion service by the Santa Fe in the 1970s/80s (like Union Pacific does with their steamers), which is why the two were stored. Santa Fe changed their minds and they were donated to this museum. Do a google search for 'Santa Fe Subjects', you'll find some information on these two monsters.
@Jared1452 The 5021 has a much larger rigid wheelbase from the front driver to the rear driver than the challenger. This is why UP won't run a Big Boy. Most trackage these days is built with diesels in mind, which have a much more narrow turn radius. A more minor issue is that a steam locomotive has a 'hammering' action on the rails when the rods reach bottom quarter. The 5021's weight combined with its monstrous wheelbase would make her less able to negotiate modern trackage.
@Jared1452 I don't mean to come across like a jerk, but may I ask who 'they' is? I see nothing about the 5021 being restored on CRM's website. I just try to keep things realistic with steam restorations, just because I've seen too many projects like this one get aborted before they even start. Or worse, aborted in the middle of the restoration when the locomotive is in pieces.
@Politcalamity I understand, someone did tell me though, he was a friend of my cousin's, He told me they were plannign to restore 5021, but he never said who was. Seeing the 5021 in steam however, would be a great thing to see. I do see what you are saying, It could happen or it could not, we just have to wait and see.
I talked to Matt Austin Him Self In June, I asked him if its a go for 5021 to be restored, he Said at this time, no, there is not enough funding right now, but he also said, she is in fact in better shape then 2925, last time he said he inspected 5021, he told me she just needs as fallows
1. new fittings,
2. new cylinders
3, new siderods and wheels
4, new boiler tubes
then shes able to be fully restored, so shes in better shape then you think
long ago 2925 was located in a roundhouse in Belen, NM. it was also part of the 2900 class and they were the heaviest straight passenger locomotives ever built not to mention the longest. Also had a tractive effort of about 79,960lbs
2925 doesn't look like it's in very good shape. Here in Pueblo, CO, we have ATSF 2912 and it's not looking that much better, The last time I heard, to get her barking steam again would cost about $4 Million. I agree completely that both of the steamers shown in the video need to be restored and running again.
Heard rumor the 5021 may be looking for new home my group would love to have her if she was. Shame to see her sit but guess it's better then the other option
That was nice to see them again, I was attending collage in Flagstaff when the Santa Fe donated that equipment. I got to watch it come thru town, quite impressive. Check out the 2926 in Albuquerque, she is well underway for operational restoration. The group is doing a fantastic job.
I know about the Technology Museum, but I've heard BNSF wants to get a hold of 2925 so they could start a steam program, and I said, COSMETIC restoration.
