@Professor6871 And a whole generation of very very ordinary comedians. Russell Brand, that tub of lard one-joke-only Gervais, posh twat Mc Intyre and that comic 'genius' the in-fact-not-very-funny-and-quite-unpleasant Larry David, plus others. Today's output makes that dull dull sitcom Frasier or even the all-teeth-and-tits tragedy Friends from the 90s look like comedy gold today.
@dutchgoing But even more depressing they get paid lots of money for sh@te all comedy. The only reason I watch those endless fucking repeats of Friends that are on E4, is that I can wank off to Jennifer Aniston on there. Ricky Guavas is a joke period the fat useless piece of crap he is. My 10 year old cousin can tell funnier jokes than he can. I wish Russell Brand had taken a drug over dose the slimy c@@t that he is. I don't know much about the US comics you mentioned.
@Professor6871 Friends, previously my definition of brain death, looks like classic enjoyable comedy compared to what we are exposed to today. Instead we have fat slob Gervais and freaks like Brand, really quite disturbing to be exposed to his gibberish even for a few seconds. I would love to see him working the till in Lidl one day, one can dream. Larry David's comedy is yet more genius-improv-we-don't-need-a-script-nasty-bullshit. Yes you do need to write a script like other people Larry.
@norristerse On a good day I can take Larry David, but Curb needs a script. His performance in 'Whatever Works' completely turned me off, but then he's playing a character & he isn't an actor, why not hire an actor? The justification given for 'The Office' being funny is that one has to work in an office to get it. Sorry not good enough. I found Alan Partridge such a telling creation that I could hardly watch it as it was so sharply and cleverly created. I have known such people indeed. Genius!
i never saw "whatever works" but i think larry david uses a similar method to steve coogan, where a situation is partly improvised by the cast before being solidified into a script. same with partridge. still, it's a matter of personal taste as to whether it works. i've never worked in an office myself, but then again you don't meet a dj with the largest listenership in the north norfolk area every day either!
@norristerse Umm well I suggest you Google WW before spending any effort in watching it. Dreadful, and I was a big Woody Allen fan at one time. David's tense improvs have a habit of descending into nastiness or everybody screaming 'Meshuga Meshuga !' at the same time which isn't funny & a cop out. Partridge actually gives me physical pain because it is so well observed, disturbingly funny. Watching Gervais licking David's bottom in the name of comedy was pretty horrible to watch really.
@norristerse If you go to RB links on YT his fans will yack on about how clever and intelligent he is. I don't mind if people like his stand-up act but he can't act and his chat show appearances are wall to wall hippy gobshite. I think humankind is actually evolving backwards. We certainly seem to have a lot of really mediocre comedy talent these days, even one who looks like a a sex offender in the form of Jimmy Carr. Fucksake! lol An old episode of 'Friends' seems like top-end comedy.
brand seems more like a hyperactive nine year old than a comedian. and jimmy carr's appearance certainly does have an unsettling "nonce-ness" about it!
This is one of the most cuttingly sarcastic and unpleasant - but brilliantly true sketches ever. Tears of laughter whenever I listen to it. Shame we've lost Peter Cook.
When i first heard these sketches i laughed and laughed so much, had never heard comedy like it before, so original and risque but these guys couldn't have cared less. Pure genius.
Peter's driving a steam roller here. An insane, cruel, hilarious steam roller.

Sadly Peter & Dudley are long dead and useless Brucie is still going well into his 80s. How depressing can be really.................

@dutchgoing I know that is depressing thought that Brucie's still alive while those comic legends are now gone. There's no justice in the world.

i'll consider myself warned! i imagine you enjoyed ricky gervais' extreme discomfort during the gary shandling interview (if you've seen it?).

@norristerse No I haven't seen it but will have a look for it. I'm not a fan you may have guessed.....

i got that impression! to each their own. although i can't even think of a comedian i'd rank alongside russell brand for sheer loathsomeness.
