Joni James was capable of making beautiful sounds occasionally, but a number of her recordings (particularly "O Holy Night") feature some very mediocre singing - flatness, pitch problems, and very muddy scoops and drops in her vocal production. One obvious reason for this is that Joni's vocal range was most obviously a high soprano, and many of the keys that she chose were simply too low for her. It's odd that her husband (and frequent arranger) Tony Acquaviva didn't address this problem!
While I respect the work this lady put into her career, there's an imbalance when an overwhelming vocal talent like, say, Rita Moss fades into the shadows while... well, those MGM marketing dollars certainly didn't hurt, right Ms. Babbo?
A beautiful ballad....and Joni here sings it beautifully (as always!). Many thanks for sharing this delightful "blast from the past" with us to enjoy! :)
@willbraham - I've playlisted nearly 4000 videos and never seen the depth of feeling for a singer as I see in the comments on Joni's music.
My 300 playlists by artist and year feature the great musical styles that seem to have vanished. The years1950-1976 play for an hour+ each and all the lists are always being expanded.
Just play a year on my channel and you can be there in your mind once again.
Joni was in particularly fragile voice on this album. On the albums she recorded shortly after, "Among My Souvenirs" and "Ti Voglio Bene" she is in solid, robust voice. Why the difference? Even Joni says she doesn't know but this album was arranged higher than those that preceded and followed, and that may account for it. Still, her even later Hank Williams tribute was arranged even higher and there's no sense of fragility. But that very fragility perfectly suited this music beautifully.
Nice lyrics.............."....someday my happy arms will hold you, and someday I'll know that moment divine when all the things you are.............ARE MINE......."

No one makes songs like this anymore.
Theres so much emotion in the music and her vocal range is amazing.
This music is lonely christmas music in chicago.
