this guy loves his country but focus more on the ugly side. i read about his articles in 2008. Hes an artist and contemporary thinker. Hes not a falungong, and he wont get shot by PRC because he does have some influence in China.
@bordergurl19 falun gong is a curl, tell people anti society, anti family, anti medicine, to sacrifice for falon kon, that cause 7 people burn themself with gasoline to death, and they even dare to deny this horrible event, follower has to read their books whole day long.
Founder is previou policeman, only high school graduated, u can imaging what the falong kon is...he said, his mother meet alian that is why he know everything,
If you see his comments and you find it provoking, direct your hate towards Canada and not China, trying his utmost best to provoke a fight and hatred against China and Chinese, Chinese in China, HK are usually quiet, we won't go and provoke people, I just want to clarify, we bear no grudges and does not want enemies
If Aiweiwei says that what China has done to prepare for the Olympics is hypocritical then how can he sit on his high horse in his ivory tower criticizing the very China that has helped him become rich and famous? How about the 400 million Chinese that has been lifted out of poverty? If Brazil can host the 2016 Olympics, why can't China. When Japan and South Korea hosted their Olympics they were not truly prosperous and democratic countries either. I hate artists, they don't think.
why shouldnt he point out the very egregious social problems in china.china is becoming a prosperous nation but only a few out of the many have been allowed to enjoy the benefits. you forget that china is ruled by a totalitarian government, whether they have done a poor, mediocre, or good job is irelevant, the very nature of such a government looks out for its own interest first and foremost and that my friend will not stand in this day and age
And you forget that China is a developing country. I would much rather trade my freedom for food. What is the point of the vote when you cannot read, write and count. In which case your vote could be bought for a dollar. I would prefer an openly totalitarian China than a pseudo-democratic country like Zimbabwe and Russia. If we compare China to India, the world's largest democracy, the numbers speak for itself. You also forget that much of the West's prosperity is hardly due to democratic ideal.
I'm not suggesting other countries are better, but millions died because of the CCP (consider the Great Leap Forward alone-minimum of 20 million starved to death). China was a mess pre1949, but it killed, imprisoned and persecuted millions during Mao's reign. It is fortunate you survived 镇反,反右派,大跃进,文化大革命. Add tibetan deaths/refugees and falun gong members getting their organs harvested. If you are one of these people, i think you will not like the Communist Party.
You must separate the Maoist era CCP and the post-Maoist era CCP. The Great Leap Forward, Hundred Flowers Campaign and collectivization all occurred under the reign of Mao Tse-tung. This is why the Cultural Revolution occurred; as a result of a conflict between the CCP and Mao. In the end Mao was proclaimed a hero by the CCP after his death; but indirectly the CCP acknowledged that Mao was "70% good and 30% bad". The CCP today is pragmatic and significantly less idealistic.
This is highlighted by Deng Xiaoping's assertion that "to get rich is glorious". This is the new goal of 'communist' China. On the Tibetan deaths/refugees and Falun Gong members issue you have brought up; it is true, these people are being persecuted. There is an unspoken deal between the CCP and the Chinese people. That is; "We will continue to deliver economic prosperity, and in return we will remain in power". Falun Gong, which grew in popularity rapidly, and Tibetan/Uighur separatism
threatened the monopoly the CCP had on political power. This is the reality of domestic and international politics; only the state can have a monopoly on violence and power. But the CCP exercises excessive amounts of direct control of its citizens. With more international pressure China will eventually give up many of its direct and coercive tools to control its people and turn to more indirect methods. Its harsh exercise of control is a leftover of its pre-capitalist years.
But in the end to think that the PRC will adopt a 'human rights' concept similar to that in the West is being overly optimistic. And who is to say the West's concept of human rights is value neutral and effective? Only by the West's standards is it value neutral, fair and effective. In the end, the West itself abuses human rights, but in a much less public and direct way than the CCP (who are not bound by constitutional and legal documents). Human rights is just a hunky dory concept.
Yes, but the Mao era is important to today, because if one wants to commend the CCP for lifting people from poverty or feeding people, one has to admit they created mass starvation themselves. And to this day, these things are hidden and forbidden subjects in China. If one suggests that food is better than freedom, it must certainly take these things into account. We can applaud the shiny veneer of the CCP on the outside, but there is a dark inside they continue to hide.
But what will revealing these secret do? People will realize their government is authoritarian, self-interested and out of touch. Many Chinese people already know this; there is a burgeoning middle class and intellectual community. Many people have an archaic idea of a fenced off China. Yes in many respects China is still relative isolated, but it's hardly North Korea. It's not hard to obtain information freely in modern China, it's incredibly easy in fact; a result of China's open door policy.
Every single one of my friends that is 20something or younger has no idea what happened during the June 4 incident (Tiananmen Massacre). I showed them videos from youtube, and in every situation, especially ones that are super "i love china, the government is the best" think twice. It's strange to see those days happened, and you had no idea.
Of course. The text books don't tell them that. It's no doubt that Chinese text books and schools spew propaganda. But many Chinese keep out of politics because many are wary of it as a result of an authoritarian government. But if they made the effort, they could easily dig up information on the June 4th incident. Also the Tienanmen Massacre was not a unilateral CCP decision. There was opposition from within the CCP itself too; for example Secretary General Zhao Ziyang of the CCP.
Fudging history and scientific data are prominent with whoever is in power in any country. America is a prime example of this, not just China. Most governments lie about everything and twist history to their own advantage. Look at 9/11.
And that's how the world works, a lot of people are too naive. They think that if a country is democratic it immediately means freedom, human rights and prosperity. But democracy without development is like a Rolls Royce without petrol. Good to look at from the outside, but it's not doing do anything for the people. We have to realize that the world is not homogeneous, what works for the rich doesn't necessarily work for the rest of the world. Only when China is develop is change viable.
The fact is this; the CCP is allowing China to become wealthier and more powerful internationally. And for that, I applaud them. Because I'm not naive enough to think that human rights and democracy secures peace and prosperity. Look at Africa. Democracy and human rights hardly delivered there. The system in China is working and delivering. So why break a system that works. Why kill the golden goose that feeds you? But I do value people like you who criticize the CCP. Only then can they improve.
Many people still remember the deaths, destruction and starvation of the Maoist era. Any many will also tell you this. That they'd trade their freedom of speech for food to line their bodies. Because, in the end, ideology and beliefs do not line stomachs. The China today, even the CCP, realizes this. That's why the CCP opened up. It has already announced that it will move towards democracy, but not a 'western democracy'. China will continue to be more democratic with time. Watch this space.
Sorry for the long post, but I feel a lot of people are incredibly idealistic when it comes to international politics. So my point is basically that development, not human rights, is what improves the lives of people. Human rights comes with development as a package. Only the rich can sit around a table and discuss 'human rights' and politics. The poor worry about food. And this is why I support the CCP, not because its an authoritarian regime who persecutes its own people, but b/c of economics.
But i think this is the problem of China today. In sum, the entire system is not considering the poor people. They are designed to help the rich get richer. The countryside is ridiculously poor. In most societies, there needs to be more freedom, transparency for people to organize and fight for their rights. This means improved working conditions, dont dump toxic waste in my water supply, give me help if i get cancer. In China, this isnt happening, and there seems no real plan to change it.
It is being addressed. The countryside poverty problem is being addressed with the 'Go West' policy and investment in the boom town of Congqing in Western China to shift manufacturing there. China only last year introduced a minimum wage and working conditions guidelines. And China is investing heavily in green technologies. In fact it is going to be number 2 in wind energy, second only to US. The CCP realizes that with current practice, the earth is unable to accommodate a wealthy China.
Deng Xiaoping also stated that in the initial stages of opening China up that a few would be richer than many. This can only be addressed with time. Inequality is the reality in every developing country. In fact the inequality in China is actually less than the inequality in the USA. Where 1% of the population control 50% of total wealth.
Ai Wei Wei must have some serious personal issues with the CCP. Obviously his emotion is greater than the pride of the Chinese people, worldwide.
Yes, you may say some sad stories about this person or that group of people, blah blah blah. Yes, those are sad stories, but with 1.4 billion people, the consensus is for the benefit of the MAJORITY. Not individualistic ideology.
Fools on youtube might say"destroy the Chinese government...." How? CCP is the best economic govt. in the world.
I think he is just feeling unfair for what his parents undertook during the Cultural Revolution. He is erecting that finger to the Rulers here in China, not the Olympics itself.
I don't get it, China has 1/5 of the world's population, why did they choose this guy to build the Olympic Stadium? So many people would have been honoured to take part in helping to design the stadium to help China realize her century long dream of holding the Olympics and they choose this ignorant idiot who probably got paid quite handsomely by the government and then comes back and bashes it. Take the taxpayers money and hire someone who would appreciate the opportunity.
i think among the chinese, a lot of people are still bitter about their history (esp the older generations who lived thru the cultural revolution). This person who spoke out wants change for sure.
His design was selected, then construction, by the marginalized(sp?), then he got mad because China was using "pomp and propaganda." Which they were...they embellished(sp?) the fireworks and what not with that little signing girl...
LOL this is like complaining why when America hosts olympics, they didnt have an event where they have slave black people as part of the show.
OHHHHH you are denying your historyyyyyy. lmao no you idiot, its common sense to prepare your best for a global event. how the hell people cant understand that simple concept is amazing.
guess in bdays you shud list the bad things bday person has done huh.
so for people claiming bad things about china about haveing no free will. i agree to a certain extent, but the reason is for money..
how many people in the west that have freedom of speech ask for things off the goverment, and speak out, but still the goverment ignores you and do what they want to do regardless..
precisely all goverments are messed up and only care for money and power,, people in the west have free speech, but the goverment dont care anyway so what is the use???
and this is what happens when people only care about money and power.. china is run the way it is, because they are the biggest money making country the next superpower, and the chinese goverment wants to make sure it keeps heading in that direction.. all goverments are greedy and would do the same weather white black or chinese. it just happens so china is a very powerful country on the rise. people get scared and jealous.. and ppl that live in china may be let down for the sake of the country
whoever country hosts the games dont talk about the tragic things they have done. so why do people point the finger at china..
it has nothing to do with race whatsoever its circumstances and enviroments,, china is the money making superpower, and everything is about money nowadays,, so the goverments acts like that to make more. ppl in england would pick a penny up off the floor today, because of the credit crunch.. its all circumstances we are all the same
people are saying that china is sooo great and everything and you say that China is the money making superpower.well if they were so great why do they spend about 400 mil on a stadium and only $150 per month for each worker?the workers were risking their lives working on a large stadium like that.the stadium is made out of steel,i'm guessing.well if one of those steel beems fell and crushed a worker that worker would die immediately and their family probably get only 150 frikin dollars!!
what makes me laugh soo much is, what about the people that built the eiffle tower, what about the people that built the twin towers.. or clean windows on your stupid american sky scrapers for $6 an hour??? they could die... why the fuck do people only criticize china?? chinese workers have always done things at a cheap rate, that why you get all the good things in your house, cause chinese people do the same job alot faster without complaining for less money..
yes and america and europe became rich by war and invasion and stealing other coutries stuff,, hhhhmmm reminds me of a little nation called japan... china is a self built nation at least they can say that
11501490: Also, expect China to win the most gold medals in London 2012 too, even without the home crowd advantage. Why? Because China's Olympic athletes are funded by the state, not from private corporations. By the time the West fully recovers from the American Financial Crisis, it's just 2 years left to train for London.
you know people can still train while a crisis is going on.a little money crisis is not gonna stop our athletes from training.u don't have to have money to work out.
oh and expect our athletes to kick China's athletes in the butt in London!
yer whatabout, london 2012.. haha if they are such a great country why were they taking extra money from the lottery that actually goes to childrens aid and charities... LOL cause they wanted to compete with chinas opening, and stadium which cant be done.... even america couldnt do it let alone england...
yep you heard me right these england took money from childrens charity from the lottery to fund the 2012...
why hasnt the whole world pointed their fingers at England???
personally what england done taking money from the charities that were for good causes to fund the olympic games is scum.. and it was actually 700 million, and more!!! China didnt take money from noone,, they funded it all themselves, especially not children in need... taking away supplies from hngry children to fund the olympics, hahaha
imagine if china done something like this, i garantee white people would be sticking their noses in the air, saying chinese people are scum..
The Tibetan exiles remind me of Confederate soldiers who escaped from the U.S. after the Civil War, going to Mexico and Brazil to set up colonies to continue their Southern Ways (ie. slavery, plantation life). Brazil did not out-law slavery then.
U.S. President Jimmy Carter (himself a Southerner) visited the decendants of such a exile community during his state visit to Brazil in the 1970s, over 110 years after their escape from the U.S.
If you are concerned about the Aborigines please put that and other issues that you are concerned about on your channel. At the moment you appear to care about nothing.
You don't see an Indian national or Mexican, unhappy with anything in his or her own country go seek assistance from another country to attack his own country. Its like asking your neighbour to attack your parents just because you don't fully agree with them. That's the problem with you Zang ethnic minority (Tibetan) of Xizang, China. Whatever grievances you have with your motherland, China, the doors to peaceful discussions has always been open to your leaders.
I have seen BBC videos that show what the chinese communist party is doing in Tibet in a very favourable light. The BBC videos I have seen on youtube do not bash China, they seem to support it.
ChinaKillsNuns: Why? BBC finally start telling the truth about China after many Chinese students in the U.K. protested at their Manchester headquarters a month after the London Olympic torch relay. Serves them right.
i really like your views on china and such as, but i dont think russia is a free country. not free enough.. some press folks have been killed because they said something bad about the goverment. and putin controls alot of the media, so there is still a long way to go, before it is like the rest of the west.
i agree with him, the people of china should have more rights and democracy. they are just eating the propaganda from the cummunist parti (basterds and idiots and mass murders)
cant we all agree on that???
demcracy and free rights are the best way forward?? i do think so..
chinese people nowadays measure success only by the cash it generates. Communist led china is precisely the beast of this sort. we are sick and tired of hollow political slogans thanks to Mao. Instead of criticizing (for the sake of critique), you tell me how much is your democracy worth? How much cash will your free stuff generate? I need an actuarial number. Tangible results are of your hindu society falls to deliver. democracy led india sucks - that's no propaganda.
bg24955: For how much is their democracy worth, you can ask the people in Iraq. Instead of in money, it's measured in body count of Iraqi civilians, 1,000,000 dead today, and freedom measured in the ability to go across town without being blown up by IED or shot by gunmen.
There are even Iraqi refugees living in China now. Give that a thought.
i mean its brainwashing whenthe cummunist parti make people think that CHina has the greatest democracy and the best rights and so on, when everyone elseknows its not true. (exept the chinese population)- by having about 35000 people to control the internet and TV. In western media they always show us the facts and the truth. we dont have any propaganda media, wich is controlled by the goverment. but i think the times are going towards democracy, they cant keep the population from not knowing
When the west espcially the america can't tolerate watching an eastern country flourishing economically, politically and socially...they do this...don't worry this is their nature...they are best at media war!!
just remain you there is a subtle difference between cyberbull and really bull ccp. more, tibetan government under china vs. government in exile at hindu valley are at different realm of existance.
you are smart enough to tell what it is fantasy and what's not.
china's importing DEAD again. 3 chinese troops (dressed as oil workers) killed while fighting freedom fighters in sudan. banzaidawan, stop china's imperialism
nzgav: U.S. NED funding for Tibetan separatists has dwindled to US$ 450,000 a year. That's barely enough to buy one roll of toilet paper for each Lama.
Uncle Sam is so broke today (due to IraqNam and Bush's economic meltdown), they'd have to borrow more money from China for this.
Tibetans tell me that they were never joined with China so they cannot be separatists.
History tells us no empire lasts forever. Uncle Sam is crumbling today, Chinese Communist Party gone tomorrow. CCP has plenty of money for buying up assets around the world but not for building schools. Which is unfortunate when Chinas regions do not have enough money to build them properly.
Do you think that China needs to send consultants to Cuba to learn about communism?
nzgav: No, Cuba should send consultants to China to learn about CAPITALISM, as China turned CAPITALIST 16 years ago.
You must have talked to those Tibetan exiles. If you ever bother to visit Tibet or the Tibetan inhabited areas in western China (as I have), you'll note that only a minority favor independence.
nzgav: You want to see atrocities? Check out this video on Youtube:
"5 girls burn to death in Lhasa Riot."
It's the 5 female store clerks in their teens and early 20s burned to death by rioters during the March 14 Lhasa Riot. Check out the reaction of their parents and friend toward the end of the video.
The new third reich would be the fourth reich, and as far as giving moral lessons, I don't think that any country should be giving them. After all, the biggest genocide of human history has been perpetrated here, in America, where 145 million American Indians have been killed, with 60 million of them in North America alone. We're all sinister. Sad truth.
oh, and that comment in the video, about the chinese people putting on a "fake" smile for the olympics... what a load of bull. You can walk anywhere in Beijing and you can sense the excitment and the people's genuine enthusiasm for these games. From the poor who gather around small shop TVs to watch the games to the rich who rides into the stadium in designated cars- they are ecstatic about these games and its not something that can be easily "faked".
I actually had the opportunity to go to several of the Beijing olympics venues this year. When i'm at the national stadium, part of the cheering crowd, i truly enjoyed the moment. I'm really thankful for this once in an lifetime opportunity to see these amazing events. As a guest, I think that China did a good job as a host. I'm not talking about history or politics, nor am i bashing anyone... i guess i just wanted to air my simple comment as a spectator of this olympics.
Camel jockers is jumping on the bandwagon of the sinister West to trash China in this report. What do the rag heads know. The should go back and ride their camels and be slave again to the europeans.
A year later itis proven these rag heads are dead wrong.
You know history. Then go back a few more years where China was under many foreigners.
Then u will understand how communisim became stronger. Americans died fighting Japanese also fighting Chinese that was why we had the cold war with China until Richard Nixon. China has been a closed country for many years because it distrusted foreigners for a good reason. U can not compare some bad leaders to Hitler because none hate people from other countries. The Chinese government controls people.
chinasucksforever: U.S. was among the 8 Foreign Powers that invaded China in 1900 during the Boxer Rebellion. The others were Japan, Russia, Germany, U.K., France, Italy, and Austria. Your troops spend 3 days sacking and looting China's capital Beijing. If you want to see their loot, suggest you go visit some fine museums in New York City.
China became closed in the 1950s to 1972 due to the U.S. Embargo against China.
Put all opinion, policital games, persona experience and including my opinion, China is not perfect, but it is still better than the China I know many years ago. Remember Richard Nixon??
Give credit to Chinese when credits are due.
Individual rights and freedom are being observed in China but China is big so not possible for now. It will take times, perhaps many more years, when all hardline goverment officials are all dead and retired.
You are paranoid;spies??we spy on own US citizens in this country. WTO violation, who is not part of air polution in Kyoto? US dollar lost 40% of its value to other manjor currencies. US borrows money to continue overspending the money it does not have. We are all working poor; may be u are not. We have the right to free speech, but how many people listen to poor and under privileged people in this country? Abortion and organ harvestingis are controversial;women still have the right to choose.
Just because democracy works for a petty 300 million people doesn't mean it will work for china. Only a few decades ago - during my parent's generation- most of the nation was starving. Compared to then, the quality of life for the average chinese citizen now has improved so, so much. Just based on this, it is obvious our country is heading in the right direction.
No, your perspective of what is happening in china is skewed. Westerners have found a nation ruled under communism...in exchange for capital it teamed up with communist china to enslave people for 45 cents per hour 50/hrs per week. Hong Kong residence don't want mainlanders to enter their zone to contaminate what they have accomplished...there is xenophobia against the mainlanders there too not just the globe. The niche in slave labour is in mainland - it will stay that way forever.
I agreed that the mainlanders should be limited to reside in HK. It will bring damage to employments. Mainlanders will obviously work for lower pay, taking over vacancies... killing of jobs and lowering adverage incomes, etc.
But, as for always slave labour forever, I dont think so. Although 1.3b poeople, but 0.8b people are still under poverty. Took 10yrs for china to bring 0.4b out of poverty. Within another 30yrs, all will be out of poverty. At that time, it cannot be slave labour anymore. 1.3b out of poverty, will make a superpower economical country and beyond. As for the architect's comment. Forget about him... everything country has something to hide. China is a changing great country.
But washed168, do you not think that the CPP is cognisant of the fact that lifting people out of poverty would cause them to lose their little niche slave status to the world? Where is this infrastructure to support creative thinking & support and cultivate the sciences? Communism retards innovation...you can't decide to just become innovators you need to have the right conditions...freedom & infrastructure. You'll have to give up the constraints of communism to get there.
...people forget what china was before - they were creative but generations of their people had their brains atrophy due to suppression. You can't just wake up one morning and decide to do a 180 turn and become creative. That's evident when you count the innovations coming from this country of 1.3 billion...nothing! Even this new stadium has western creation written all over it. Listen to M.I.T. listen to Ai Weiwei & others - they will tell you China's chances are as fake as the fireworks.
Mr Wei describes the chinese people essentially as follows: "Fake smiles" "unappreciative of the arts" "no freedom of spirit" and another writes "China, a sea of humans, not a drop of humanity" - you need a free spirit to become great. Canada, where I live with only 33 million, come out with so many innovations in science and medicine...even Israel has high-technoly breakthroughs. Ask yourself what is wrong with china.
...aside from the essential ingredients to become certifiable innovators, the largest capitalists in the world - the USA - are in bed with the CPP to ENSURE that poverty remains at current levels and to ensure that the CPP continues to deprive nearly 1 billion people of proper education. They are largely uneducated. The corruption runs deep and no cpp official will yield their power over to rights-advocates - EVER. The countdown clock to super-power status hasn't even started. 20 yrs? dreamin!
Lastly, don't argue with me over this because I've read the full report coming from M.I.T. - I didn't get this from a 3 minute sound bite out of the likes of CNN or Fox. M.I.T. studied china for years and there is no greater authority. 1 billion people will not be making $20k per year and start buying the things they build - that's why the usa's success in the world is everybody's business...china loans billions per year to them to ensure they stay in the game & their people slaves. Period.
china = the wests toilet....exhaust pipe...slave labour, concentration camp, ready-to-harvest unwilling body parts supply store. If I want to at ANY given time, I can take your liver if I needed a spare part and there's nothing you can do about it. The CPP is there to ensure you don't open your mouth to argue different. So for that reason I support the CPP. Sub-humans don't deserve dignity.
I don't fucking understand all the negative criticism from the west on china, and the fact that most of their points aren't even valid makes this even more ridiculous. Pollution, human rights, blah blah blah. China is an industrializing country, and anyone with a mental capacity greater than a goldfish knows this means pollution. Human rights - this is a nation of 1.3 billion people we're talking about. Imagine how long and how much it would cost for this many people to vote.
It's the same criticism that the residents of Hong Kong express. They don't want the mainlanders to enter Hong Kong and you need $6.5 million in capital to obtan a HKID card to even live there. If relative freedom and rights can thrive in HK why do you think it's denied to mainland china? Think about it. It's all exploitation. You can't defend the elite or CPP for this. The world is crumbling because of this globalization...the industry belongs to the wests elite - not you or the slaves.
MOST GOLD MEDALS Atlanta 1996 USA 1st (44 golds) , China 4th (16 golds) Sydney 2000 USA 1st (37 golds) , China 3rd (28 golds) Athens 2004 USA 1st (36 golds) , China 2nd (32 golds) See how USA (a powerful rich nation) decreases in golds while China increases in golds over the years! and NOW!!! Beijing 2008 = CURRENTLY CHINA HAS THE MOST GOLDS!!!!
I didn't quite enjoy my trip to China(bout 3 years ago). Things were TOO money-oriented and it's funny to see a "communist" government be so capitalistic.
The TOO money-oriented atmosphere i felt there i think lead to wealth/poverty bi-polarisation of the society, tight control(even brainwash??) by the governmet, environmental probs etc etc.

Olympic is for the world citizen's endurance and excellence in sport not only for China, ..This designer is so stupid
China spent 4 years and US $10 billion dollar plus for the greatest ever olympic in human history, and for the world people to enjoy
With US $10 billion china can build 2 aircraft carriers but choose not to do so
instead spent on this event.
Go China, lead the world to forever peace for mankind.

I don't think he made enough money that is why he started to criticize on China. Hopeful get enough attention that people will buy his art.

I hate artists, they don't think.
lendmeurears 2 years ago
why shouldnt he point out the very egregious social problems in china.china is becoming a prosperous nation but only a few out of the many have been allowed to enjoy the benefits. you forget that china is ruled by a totalitarian government, whether they have done a poor, mediocre, or good job is irelevant, the very nature of such a government looks out for its own interest first and foremost and that my friend will not stand in this day and age
ydoggbdoggbigG2 2 years ago
And you forget that China is a developing country. I would much rather trade my freedom for food. What is the point of the vote when you cannot read, write and count. In which case your vote could be bought for a dollar. I would prefer an openly totalitarian China than a pseudo-democratic country like Zimbabwe and Russia. If we compare China to India, the world's largest democracy, the numbers speak for itself. You also forget that much of the West's prosperity is hardly due to democratic ideal.
lendmeurears 2 years ago
I'm not suggesting other countries are better, but millions died because of the CCP (consider the Great Leap Forward alone-minimum of 20 million starved to death). China was a mess pre1949, but it killed, imprisoned and persecuted millions during Mao's reign. It is fortunate you survived 镇反,反右派,大跃进,文化大革命. Add tibetan deaths/refugees and falun gong members getting their organs harvested. If you are one of these people, i think you will not like the Communist Party.
Turtlechief99 2 years ago
You must separate the Maoist era CCP and the post-Maoist era CCP. The Great Leap Forward, Hundred Flowers Campaign and collectivization all occurred under the reign of Mao Tse-tung. This is why the Cultural Revolution occurred; as a result of a conflict between the CCP and Mao. In the end Mao was proclaimed a hero by the CCP after his death; but indirectly the CCP acknowledged that Mao was "70% good and 30% bad". The CCP today is pragmatic and significantly less idealistic.
lendmeurears 2 years ago
This is highlighted by Deng Xiaoping's assertion that "to get rich is glorious". This is the new goal of 'communist' China. On the Tibetan deaths/refugees and Falun Gong members issue you have brought up; it is true, these people are being persecuted. There is an unspoken deal between the CCP and the Chinese people. That is; "We will continue to deliver economic prosperity, and in return we will remain in power". Falun Gong, which grew in popularity rapidly, and Tibetan/Uighur separatism
lendmeurears 2 years ago
threatened the monopoly the CCP had on political power. This is the reality of domestic and international politics; only the state can have a monopoly on violence and power. But the CCP exercises excessive amounts of direct control of its citizens. With more international pressure China will eventually give up many of its direct and coercive tools to control its people and turn to more indirect methods. Its harsh exercise of control is a leftover of its pre-capitalist years.
lendmeurears 2 years ago
But in the end to think that the PRC will adopt a 'human rights' concept similar to that in the West is being overly optimistic. And who is to say the West's concept of human rights is value neutral and effective? Only by the West's standards is it value neutral, fair and effective. In the end, the West itself abuses human rights, but in a much less public and direct way than the CCP (who are not bound by constitutional and legal documents). Human rights is just a hunky dory concept.
lendmeurears 2 years ago
Yes, but the Mao era is important to today, because if one wants to commend the CCP for lifting people from poverty or feeding people, one has to admit they created mass starvation themselves. And to this day, these things are hidden and forbidden subjects in China. If one suggests that food is better than freedom, it must certainly take these things into account. We can applaud the shiny veneer of the CCP on the outside, but there is a dark inside they continue to hide.
Turtlechief99 2 years ago
But what will revealing these secret do? People will realize their government is authoritarian, self-interested and out of touch. Many Chinese people already know this; there is a burgeoning middle class and intellectual community. Many people have an archaic idea of a fenced off China. Yes in many respects China is still relative isolated, but it's hardly North Korea. It's not hard to obtain information freely in modern China, it's incredibly easy in fact; a result of China's open door policy.
lendmeurears 2 years ago
Every single one of my friends that is 20something or younger has no idea what happened during the June 4 incident (Tiananmen Massacre). I showed them videos from youtube, and in every situation, especially ones that are super "i love china, the government is the best" think twice. It's strange to see those days happened, and you had no idea.
Turtlechief99 2 years ago
There was opposition from within the CCP itself too; for example Secretary General Zhao Ziyang of the CCP.
lendmeurears 2 years ago
Fudging history and scientific data are prominent with whoever is in power in any country. America is a prime example of this, not just China. Most governments lie about everything and twist history to their own advantage. Look at 9/11.
monkeymirror 2 years ago
And that's how the world works, a lot of people are too naive. They think that if a country is democratic it immediately means freedom, human rights and prosperity. But democracy without development is like a Rolls Royce without petrol. Good to look at from the outside, but it's not doing do anything for the people. We have to realize that the world is not homogeneous, what works for the rich doesn't necessarily work for the rest of the world. Only when China is develop is change viable.
lendmeurears 2 years ago
The fact is this; the CCP is allowing China to become wealthier and more powerful internationally. And for that, I applaud them. Because I'm not naive enough to think that human rights and democracy secures peace and prosperity. Look at Africa. Democracy and human rights hardly delivered there. The system in China is working and delivering. So why break a system that works. Why kill the golden goose that feeds you? But I do value people like you who criticize the CCP. Only then can they improve.
lendmeurears 2 years ago
Many people still remember the deaths, destruction and starvation of the Maoist era. Any many will also tell you this. That they'd trade their freedom of speech for food to line their bodies. Because, in the end, ideology and beliefs do not line stomachs. The China today, even the CCP, realizes this. That's why the CCP opened up. It has already announced that it will move towards democracy, but not a 'western democracy'. China will continue to be more democratic with time. Watch this space.
lendmeurears 2 years ago
Sorry for the long post, but I feel a lot of people are incredibly idealistic when it comes to international politics. So my point is basically that development, not human rights, is what improves the lives of people. Human rights comes with development as a package. Only the rich can sit around a table and discuss 'human rights' and politics. The poor worry about food. And this is why I support the CCP, not because its an authoritarian regime who persecutes its own people, but b/c of economics.
lendmeurears 2 years ago
But i think this is the problem of China today. In sum, the entire system is not considering the poor people. They are designed to help the rich get richer. The countryside is ridiculously poor. In most societies, there needs to be more freedom, transparency for people to organize and fight for their rights. This means improved working conditions, dont dump toxic waste in my water supply, give me help if i get cancer. In China, this isnt happening, and there seems no real plan to change it.
Turtlechief99 2 years ago
It is being addressed. The countryside poverty problem is being addressed with the 'Go West' policy and investment in the boom town of Congqing in Western China to shift manufacturing there. China only last year introduced a minimum wage and working conditions guidelines. And China is investing heavily in green technologies. In fact it is going to be number 2 in wind energy, second only to US. The CCP realizes that with current practice, the earth is unable to accommodate a wealthy China.
lendmeurears 2 years ago
Deng Xiaoping also stated that in the initial stages of opening China up that a few would be richer than many. This can only be addressed with time. Inequality is the reality in every developing country. In fact the inequality in China is actually less than the inequality in the USA. Where 1% of the population control 50% of total wealth.

so for people claiming bad things about china about haveing no free will. i agree to a certain extent, but the reason is for money..
how many people in the west that have freedom of speech ask for things off the goverment, and speak out, but still the goverment ignores you and do what they want to do regardless..
precisely all goverments are messed up and only care for money and power,, people in the west have free speech, but the goverment dont care anyway so what is the use???

and this is what happens when people only care about money and power.. china is run the way it is, because they are the biggest money making country the next superpower, and the chinese goverment wants to make sure it keeps heading in that direction.. all goverments are greedy and would do the same weather white black or chinese. it just happens so china is a very powerful country on the rise. people get scared and jealous.. and ppl that live in china may be let down for the sake of the country

quickmantan 2 years ago
people are saying that china is sooo great and everything and you say that China is the money making superpower.well if they were so great why do they spend about 400 mil on a stadium and only $150 per month for each worker?the workers were risking their lives working on a large stadium like that.the stadium is made out of steel,i'm guessing.well if one of those steel beems fell and crushed a worker that worker would die immediately and their family probably get only 150 frikin dollars!!

what makes me laugh soo much is, what about the people that built the eiffle tower, what about the people that built the twin towers.. or clean windows on your stupid american sky scrapers for $6 an hour??? they could die... why the fuck do people only criticize china?? chinese workers have always done things at a cheap rate, that why you get all the good things in your house, cause chinese people do the same job alot faster without complaining for less money..

The Dalai Lama used to own 6,000 slaves in Tibet.
The Tibetan exiles remind me of Confederate soldiers who escaped from the U.S. after the Civil War, going to Mexico and Brazil to set up colonies to continue their Southern Ways (ie. slavery, plantation life). Brazil did not out-law slavery then.
U.S. President Jimmy Carter (himself a Southerner) visited the decendants of such a exile community during his state visit to Brazil in the 1970s, over 110 years after their escape from the U.S.

olympics were glorious. all u China bashers can go to hell.
jdiddy666 3 years ago
oh, and that comment in the video, about the chinese people putting on a "fake" smile for the olympics... what a load of bull. You can walk anywhere in Beijing and you can sense the excitment and the people's genuine enthusiasm for these games. From the poor who gather around small shop TVs to watch the games to the rich who rides into the stadium in designated cars- they are ecstatic about these games and its not something that can be easily "faked".
panc18 3 years ago

Sinister west?
Who created the PC, internet, airplanes, and all the industries that now employ China's people?
Who saved China from Japan in WWII?
How many American boys DIED saving China from Japan?
Oh - I forgot - the CCP doesn't teach Chinese that in their schools. All it teaches is its new brand of virulent Nazism and nationalism.
Without the "sinister west", China would be slaves of Japan today.
A new Nazism is rising in Asia - China will soon be the new Third Reich!

The Chinese government controls people.
mshieh70 3 years ago
China was under many foreigners? Like who? USA.
Name the date that USA invaded China please.
We had the cold war with Chinese because China went communist.
China was a closed country because they are paranoid and greedy. Only when they saw what the west had did they open.

chinasucksforever: U.S. was among the 8 Foreign Powers that invaded China in 1900 during the Boxer Rebellion.

It will take times, perhaps many more years, when all hardline goverment officials are all dead and retired.
mshieh70 3 years ago
Give credit where credit is due:
- Industrial spies in the USA.
- Violated WTO agreements.
- Illegally manipulates their currency to keep their products cheap.
- No free speech.
- Forced abortion on all women in China.
- Organ harvesting.
Yep - I have to give credit where credit is due - China is the most evil country on the face of the earth.
chinasucksforever 3 years ago
You are paranoid;spies??we spy on own US citizens in this country. WTO violation, who is not part of air polution in Kyoto? US dollar lost 40% of its value to other manjor currencies. US borrows money to continue overspending the money it does not have. We are all working poor; may be u are not. We have the right to free speech, but how many people listen to poor and under privileged people in this country? Abortion and organ harvestingis are controversial;women still have the right to choose.

It's ok to fear China - they are planning world domination - just like Hitler did.
Have we forgotten the lessons of WWII so quickly?

Communism is just a whole fake but many people still believe in it.
Communism says that the wellbeing of the whole nation is its target but look how capitalistic China has become they're like US.
Everyone is looking for his own profit, means the poor people get poorer the richer get richer.
What is government of China doing to balance this? Nothing, therefore it is my opinion that we do not need a faked communism in China.

Problem with China is the population. 1.3 billion. Hard to keep the wheels on the wagon moving forward with so many on board.
They can afford to treat their citizens like crap...there is always another willing to jump into a vacant spot.
Ninefingers1010 3 years ago
Just because democracy works for a petty 300 million people doesn't mean it will work for china. Only a few decades ago - during my parent's generation- most of the nation was starving. Compared to then, the quality of life for the average chinese citizen now has improved so, so much. Just based on this, it is obvious our country is heading in the right direction.
J1w3 3 years ago
No, your perspective of what is happening in china is skewed. Westerners have found a nation ruled under communism...in exchange for capital it teamed up with communist china to enslave people for 45 cents per hour 50/hrs per week. Hong Kong residence don't want mainlanders to enter their zone to contaminate what they have accomplished...there is xenophobia against the mainlanders there too not just the globe. The niche in slave labour is in mainland - it will stay that way forever.
Rata4You 3 years ago
I agreed that the mainlanders should be limited to reside in HK. It will bring damage to employments. Mainlanders will obviously work for lower pay, taking over vacancies... killing of jobs and lowering adverage incomes, etc.

Rata4You 3 years ago
But, as for always slave labour forever, I dont think so. Although 1.3b poeople, but 0.8b people are still under poverty. Took 10yrs for china to bring 0.4b out of poverty. Within another 30yrs, all will be out of poverty. At that time, it cannot be slave labour anymore. 1.3b out of poverty, will make a superpower economical country and beyond. As for the architect's comment. Forget about him... everything country has something to hide. China is a changing great country.
washed168 3 years ago
But washed168, do you not think that the CPP is cognisant of the fact that lifting people out of poverty would cause them to lose their little niche slave status to the world? Where is this infrastructure to support creative thinking & support and cultivate the sciences? Communism retards innovation...you can't decide to just become innovators you need to have the right conditions...freedom & infrastructure. You'll have to give up the constraints of communism to get there.
Rata4You 3 years ago
...people forget what china was before - they were creative but generations of their people had their brains atrophy due to suppression.
Rata4You 3 years ago
Mr Wei describes the chinese people essentially as follows: "Fake smiles" "unappreciative of the arts" "no freedom of spirit" and another writes "China, a sea of humans, not a drop of humanity" - you need a free spirit to become great. Canada, where I live with only 33 million, come out with so many innovations in science and medicine...even Israel has high-technoly breakthroughs. Ask yourself what is wrong with china.
Rata4You 3 years ago
...aside from the essential ingredients to become certifiable innovators, the largest capitalists in the world - the USA - are in bed with the CPP to ENSURE that poverty remains at current levels and to ensure that the CPP continues to deprive nearly 1 billion people of proper education. They are largely uneducated. The corruption runs deep and no cpp official will yield their power over to rights-advocates - EVER. The countdown clock to super-power status hasn't even started. 20 yrs? dreamin!
Rata4You 3 years ago
Lastly, don't argue with me over this because I've read the full report coming from M.I.T. - I didn't get this from a 3 minute sound bite out of the likes of CNN or Fox. M.I.T. studied china for years and there is no greater authority. 1 billion people will not be making $20k per year and start buying the things they build - that's why the usa's success in the world is everybody's business...china loans billions per year to them to ensure they stay in the game & their people slaves. Period.

jdiddy666 3 years ago
china = the wests toilet....exhaust pipe...slave labour, concentration camp, ready-to-harvest unwilling body parts supply store. If I want to at ANY given time, I can take your liver if I needed a spare part and there's nothing you can do about it. The CPP is there to ensure you don't open your mouth to argue different. So for that reason I support the CPP. Sub-humans don't deserve dignity.
Rata4You 3 years ago
I don't fucking understand all the negative criticism from the west on china, and the fact that most of their points aren't even valid makes this even more ridiculous. Pollution, human rights, blah blah blah. China is an industrializing country, and anyone with a mental capacity greater than a goldfish knows this means pollution. Human rights - this is a nation of 1.3 billion people we're talking about. Imagine how long and how much it would cost for this many people to vote.
J1w3 3 years ago
It's the same criticism that the residents of Hong Kong express. They don't want the mainlanders to enter Hong Kong and you need $6.5 million in capital to obtan a HKID card to even live there. If relative freedom and rights can thrive in HK why do you think it's denied to mainland china? Think about it. It's all exploitation. You can't defend the elite or CPP for this. The world is crumbling because of this globalization...the industry belongs to the wests elite - not you or the slaves.

! We need free, ccp out of china .
