The montage includes rare film of Elgar talking to the camera (a silent film alas!), playing with his dogs, etc. as well as still shots of Elgar and the beautiful English countryside that inspired him. Thank you for posting this rare film of one of the greatest musical geniuses of all time, someone who is easily worthy of standing alongside Frederic Chopin and Johann Sebastian Bach. The whole video is available in the UK on a BBC DVD (alas not available in the US format).

Is this the one where he comes in and says something like "Gentlemen, I want you to play this like you've never heard it before"? Because he conducts it like he's never seen it before.

Not the best conductor of his own stuff.

Conductors aren't usually that great at conducting period. I've seen a video of Copland conducting Rodeo with the Minnesota Orchestra in "76, and it conduct was hopeless!!

aparantly, Robert Schumann rarely conducted his own compositions because the orchestra couldn't stand his lack of conducting ability.
