It wasn't a 55 yard field goal, it was a 39 yard field goal. Also it was indoors. That's why Gary Anderson is on this list. He singlehandedly gave the Falcons a chance to win the game by missing that easy 39 yard field goal. The Vikings should of been in that Super Bowl.
It actually was Gary Anderson's fault. The 1998 Vikings defense was not asked to stop teams, they had to score lots of points to win. The kick was a 39 yard field goal and it was indoors and they had silence because they were at home. An nfl kicker needs to make that kick from that distance when the kick is indoors, and since he didn't, it's his fault that they lost. That kick should of won the game for the Vikings..
@patsrule213 Was it Gary Anderson who fumble the ball with less than 2 minutes before the half with Vikings up 14 points??? The fumble resulted in a Falcon TD cutting the lead to 7 which changed the whole game. BUT NO ONE MENTIONS THIS??? Only the missed FG.
Yes, the fumble before halftime was one reason why, but the biggest reason is Gary Anderson missing the field goal. If he makes the field goal, the Falcons don't even get a shot to tie the game. The Falcons shouldn't have had a chance to tie the game with 1 drive, it was a 39 yard field goal, indoors, with no crowd noise, it should of been an easy kick, Gary Anderson gave the Falcons the opportunity to win by missing the field goal, that's why he gets the blame for the loss.
@patsrule213 You win as team and you lose as team. There are alot of plays throughout a game that make a huge difference on the final score.......you dont think the BRADY safety was a big reason for PATS loss. It was as big as Welker drop. To blame the person who makes the last mistake in a game is so wrong.
@pp63100 but he still fucked up....One day as a player you have to realized that any points could help a team If gary made that kick and the defense let the falcons score and if they made the extra point...Vikings would still be in the lead
@seanman70 To me a foul up or fuck up is when a player makes a bone-headed mistake that resulted in team loss. A missed FG is just part of the game, no matter what the distance......the play that cost the 49ers from going to Super Bowl wasnt the fumble by kick returner in OT, thats part of game, he's trying to get his team in position to win. THE FOUL UP was when he tried to pick up the ball on the earlier punt, that just grazed his knee.
@patsrule213 The Vikings were up 10 right?? i agree then If Gary made that kick and if the defense did let Atl falcons score and make the extra point the Vikings wouldve still been in the league
of course its his fault he makes the kick we go up by 10 Atlanta can score the touchdown we are still up by 3 game never goes to overtime Vikings go to the superbowl
@1943fighter So your defense wasn't responsible for giving up the points then?! Give me a break, sure, him missing the field goal was big, but its hardly his fault they lost. They lost because the defense gave up a TD and then a FG in OT. The game didn't end on his missed FG, sorry.
The 1998 Vikings defense was not asked to stop teams. They had to score lots of points to win games. The defense gabe up 30 total points, the defense did it's job, the offense needed to score 35+ points to win games. Gary Anderson is part of the offense, it was a 39 yard field goal indoors. It wasn't cold or windy and he has silence, and was a great nfl kicker. Nfl kickers have to make 39 yard field goals that are indoors, and he missed, it's 100% his fault.
But the 1998 Vikings defense wasn't asked to stop teams, they had to score lots of points to win. I agree that defense wins championchips, and they had an average defense. But it's a 39 yard field goal indoors, you have to make that kick. And he didn't. The blame has to go to Gary Anderson.
You can't call this Gary's fault because it wasn't like he missed a game winning field goal. He missed the field goal to put them up by 10, the defense was the one who should take the blame, for allowing the TD and the overtime fg.
Of course you can blame Gary Anderson. How can't you blame him? It was a 39 yard field goal and it was indoors. I can't blame the defense because they weren't asked to stop teams, the 1998 Vikings had to score lots of points to win.
Let's look at the facts: Minnesota was ahead 27-20. Yes, it was an unfortunate 39 yard FG miss, but Anderson made 2 other field goals for 29 and 35 yards in that game. That tells me the Vikings offense didn't produce at least twice in the red zone. Also, there was no mention of the Vikes D giving up that last TD to tie the game!!! Not to the mention the D giving up that last field goal in OT.
I don't consider this a foul-up. When I think of foul-ups, I think of plays that came out of a Three Stooges or Marx Brothers movie. Garo Yepremian's gaffe was a foul-up. Jim Marshall's wrong way run was a foul-up. Missing a field goal is NOT a foul-up. It happens.
Furthermore, is it Gary Anderson's fault that the Falcons were then allowed to drive 71 yards in 2 minutes to tie the game? Is it Gary Anderson's fault that Moss dropped two potential touchdown passes in that game? Is it Scott Norwood's fault that the Giants set a super bowl record for time of possession? Is it Scott Norwood's fault that the Bills linebackers were missing tackles on wide receivers? Let's point the blame arrow where it really needs to go.
I am so sick of hearing kickers catch so much blame and hostility for missed kicks. Is it their job to go out and make extra points and field goals? Yeah. But a quarterback's job is to complete passes and not throw interceptions. A defender's job is to tackle the ballcarrier. A wide receiver's job is to catch passes. So technically..every player in NFL history has fucked up at their job repeatedly....even Jerry Rice, Lawrence Taylor and Jim Brown. So....let's not crucify kickers.
I hate when people blame this game on Gary Anderson. I watched the complete re-air and there were so many plays that happened that if only one of them went the Vikings' way they would've won. Starters with cramps were playing cuz their backups had worse injuries, Moss was injured before half, and Denny Green had to get cute right before halftime and honestly Cunningham's fumble changed the whole game.
This has to be one of the saddest moments in NFL history for the likes of Dennis Green, Randy Moss, Randall Cunningham Cris Carter and Gary Anderson..... What could have been if he makes this field goal.
The 2 situations were much different. Billy Cundiff's field goal was 7 yards shorter, but it was outside, it was cold, it was windy, and he had to deal with the New England crowd, while Gary Anderson's kick was indoors with perfect conditions for a kicker. So, this was much worse then Billy Cundiff's miss.
@mobiusuno not really. Don't tell me that Cundiff was perfect all season long cause he wasn't. He missed some field goals in the regular seasons. Gary Anderson didn't miss any field goals at all until the playoffs. sorry man. not the same thin.g Gary again never missed a fg until playoffs.
@mobiusuno Wrong on three counts. 1. The '98 Vikings, if they win the Super Bowl, probably go down as a top 5 NFL team all time. The Ravens would have been a totally forgettable SB champion 2. This was to put the game away and put the Vikes up 10 points, Cundiffs kick was to merely tie it. 3. Cundiff was having a shaky year as it was, not to say his miss miss still wasn't surprising, but Anderson was PERFECT all year, thus making this miss much more shocking
@mobiusuno although the Ravens wouldnt have won it all, since they are just losers. Sorry to say, respect to them, but they are just one of those teams. like the Pats in the new era
@JayFeliceW I disagree. The Vikings were so dominant in 1998 that Gary Anderson could have missed every field goal and every extra kick and they STILL would have been 15-1. The one time we actually needed him he didn't come through.
I don't think Anderson, or for that matter, even Norwood should be blamed for their respective teams' losses. Up by 7 and lose in OT? No defense. The K-gun offense held to 19 points and barely any time to move the ball? Great opposing running game. A lot more goes in than just kicking.
@tiatrips opposing running game was decent and only decent in OT because some of the defensive starters were hurt...more notably john randle....it was the kicking..all the kicking the kicking won it for the falcons and lost it for the vikings....its funny how we take one of the most underrated positions in football for granted
I still have nightmares over this. This was much worse than Favre throwing an interception in the 2009 NFC championship game against the Saints in the final seconds.
Disappointing loss, but I've never blamed Gary Anderson for that missed field goal. He gave us a hell of a year, and we had a great run in 98. Skol Vikes!
I remember me and my family (all Packer fans) standing up and cheering when he missed that field goal. If there is anything I enjoy more than watching my Pack win SB XXXI and XLV, it watching the Vikes fail year in and year out.
@Skazellino Hope you're talking about the 2011 Packers. The Vikings beat Arizona in the first playoff game in 1998 before they lost to the Falcons. The Packers, I believe, are the only 15-1 team to not win a playoff game. Again, if you're referring to the Vikings you have egg on your face! They did win a playoff game that year.
@melodies9kids You guys didn't lose just because of one guy. That defense of yours still could have stopped the Falcons from driving down the field for they tying score. And what's funny is that kickers aren't deemed to be that important and don't even deserve to go to the hall of fame. But they miss a kick and you make it seem like they're the ones who are the most responsible in determining a game's outcome. If he had made the FG, you wouldn't even know who Gary Anderson is.
Oh shut the fuck up Chuck Smith. Look what happened to you and the falcons in the super bowl moron. You're a hypocrite. I think Gary Anderson was unfairly blamed for that loss because earlier in the game Randy Moss dropped a big pass in the end zone. Also Dennis Green was stupid for taking a knee with 30 seconds left in the game. You don't do that in a championship game. That was pitiful. The game should have not come down to Gary Anderson kicking.
@everybodylies615 lol hell yeah dude. I love How I Met Your Mother and when I saw that episode I wanted to look up the play that Marshall was talking about and now, here I am! (^_^)
The Vikings defense was not asked to stop teams that year. They had to score to win, so a lot of the blame has to go to Gary Anderson. It was a 39 yard field goal and it was indoors, there was no wind.
He had the perfect season, he was a Hall of Fame kicker, he was in a Home game, he was in a dome, he led the whole game and he still lost. Can't get any worse than that.
The Patriots should have went undefeated in 2007 but lost to the Giants
The Cowboys should have won Superbowl 13 but didn't because of a drop pass
The Titans should have been Superbowl champions but lost by a yard
The Lions should have been in the playoffs by now.
My point is that there are always alot of could've, would've Should've but it don't change the fact about what happen to any NFL team past or present it's just the Principle of the thing that's all I'm saying
@Terryfan The Titans were playing The 1999 Rams juggernaut. There wasn't any "Titans should've won that game" talk. They were lucky to get within that last yard. Nobody who saw the play though he was really gonna reach the goal line. He made a monumental effort to stretch within 4 feet or so, but the tackle had already been secured. The Titans needed The Music City Miracle to get past The Bills in the playoffs. The '98 Vikes & then the '07 Pats set record for most points ever scored. 2 chokes.
@pewsterbaby You're right the Titans were lucky to even make it to the superbowl and I am not taking anything from the 99 Rams they were a powerhouse I never would take that from them they earn their win in the superbowl. Again it was just the principle of the thing thats all. Both the 98 Vikes and 07 Patriots may have been the favorites to win the superbowl but they failed and they lost to the underdogs in their respect games.
That really wasn't Andersons fault, a Falcons player came in on the right and Anderson pulled the kick left so it wouldn't get blocked, most kickers in todays game will do this, it's just instinct. Maybe they should have blocked better on the field goal.
@Tronathon242 perhaps but i thought Minny would of given Denver a better game, we all knew Atl was over their head and shouldnt of even been in the SB.
Obviously Anderson is a goat, but there were so many things that cost the Vikes this game. I always wondered what "would have" happened it Anderson's kick would have been accurate right down the middle or towards the right. I say that because I think the Falcons have a great shot at blocking it if you look at the guy coming off the end. Anyway, Vikes probably would have lost to Denver anyway. Denver would have worn out the Vikes with TD just like the Bucs did earlier in the year with Alstott
@toeazy34 Even if the Vikings would have made it to the Superbowl The Denver Broncos would have destroy them like they destroy the Falcons in the game. again it's the Principle of the thing. Just because a team play like Superbowl champions don't always mean they are going to be in the superbowl and all the blame shouldn't be place on Anderson because the whole team took themselves out of the game
@JadedRomantic You people are nothing but a bunch of arrogant, slovenly cakestuffers who use your franchise's supposedly nice qualities to be insufferable pricks. "Oh, we're from Wiscaaansin!"
Hey puppy pup, I am not from "Wiscaaansin." The Packers are not a regional fanbase, unlike other teams, like the Vikings. The Packers fanbase is nationwide, indeed even international.
Also, what do you mean by supposedly nice qualities. We are the ancien, primoridal power of the NFL, 13 world titles and counting, and four rings (and counting). Green Bay 13 (or 4), Minnesota ZERO! EAT IT!
Don't believe everything you see on TV, kiddies. America's team really only apppies to Tom Landry's Cowboys in the late 70s, just as the Monsters of Midway only applies to the 1940 Bears.
@JadedRomantic See my comment stands. Nothing but arrogant pricks that no one likes. :) and international? I was a an exchange student over to the uk and i saw plenty of vikings jerseys and many other teams. Dolphins.. and so on. Trust me you are not the only international team lmfao.
That misses the point. The point is, when the Super Bowl was within your grasp, you choked as you always did. 98 was certainly a setback, but we still have four rings, compared to your none. Green Bay 4 (or 13 counting all world titles), Minnesota 01
What's all this 'we' talk. I'd bet a good a mount of money that YOU don't have ANY superbowl rings. Just because you live vicariously through the Packers doesn't mean that YOU won anything.
Hall of Famer John Randle was injured during that game and so was another key defensive player. And Yes, the vikings choked but stop announcing it to the world.
I met a player on that squad, safety Joey Browner and when mentioned he just broke down and cried. That squad was the best ever since the Perfect Dolphins and the 18-1 Patriots. The Super Bowl that never was Minnesota......Sorry I got worked up but it was right there...
@ThinBeagle yeah i know, seriously though. I didn't realize my mistake until i look at the 50 greatest Vikings and realize I made a mistake. I thought that someone would point out my error and someone did. thank you.
You really are a vikings fan if you knew that i was wrong. But I DID meet Joey Browner,Matt Blair, Bill Brown,Mack Tinglehoff, Jeff Siemon, and Leslie Frazier. Someone out of the 5 did breakdown and cry but i
LOL I am not a Vikes fan. I am a Broncos fan. Browner was Dennis Smiths (denver great ss) Best man at his wedding. Joey Browner Ronnie Lott and Dennis Smith made up one of the greatest secondarys in college history all being drafted in the first round of the same draft out of USC. Kenny Easley was also taken in the first round of this draft at saftey from UCLA and was Browners HS Team mate. I know random useless facts about the NFL
I think it is actually- 45 yards is a long kick, and truthfully Norwood was never a long-bomber. Anderson on the other hand HADN'T MISSED A KICK ALL YEAR!!! And then misses a 38 yarder, at home, inside the dome. Ouch, ouch, ouch.

Ungart404 1 month ago
@mikepuppetz9 The only thing more embarrassing would be to go 15-1 and not even win a playoff game.

@mikepuppetz9 Well congratulations you are the 1st team to go 15-1 and not win a playoff game...I enjoyed that fail!
Skazellino 1 week ago
@Skazellino Hope you're talking about the 2011 Packers. The Vikings beat Arizona in the first playoff game in 1998 before they lost to the Falcons. The Packers, I believe, are the only 15-1 team to not win a playoff game. Again, if you're referring to the Vikings you have egg on your face! They did win a playoff game that year.

@melodies9kids Grow up, kid.
cochranexyz 2 months ago
@melodies9kids You guys didn't lose just because of one guy. That defense of yours still could have stopped the Falcons from driving down the field for they tying score. And what's funny is that kickers aren't deemed to be that important and don't even deserve to go to the hall of fame. But they miss a kick and you make it seem like they're the ones who are the most responsible in determining a game's outcome. If he had made the FG, you wouldn't even know who Gary Anderson is.
jbobbster 2 months ago
don't blame the kicker..there are 22 guys on each side of the ball on the field that could have scored more or stop the falcons from scoring...

@rusty1491 Nope, it's the 11-Year Curse.
1976 season- lose Super Bowl XI, the last SB the Vikes have played in.
1987 season- lose NFC title game on Darrin Nelson's dropped pass.
1998 season- lose NFC title game on the Gary Anderson missed FG.
2009 season- lose NFC title game on the Brett Favre interception.
Remember this in 2020 if you're having a good season, Vikings fans.

sjsharks456 2 months ago
Oh shut the fuck up Chuck Smith. Look what happened to you and the falcons in the super bowl moron. You're a hypocrite. I think Gary Anderson was unfairly blamed for that loss because earlier in the game Randy Moss dropped a big pass in the end zone. Also Dennis Green was stupid for taking a knee with 30 seconds left in the game. You don't do that in a championship game. That was pitiful. The game should have not come down to Gary Anderson kicking.

It was the Vikings D that let the team down. Not the kicker. D could have still come up with a stop after that kick.
zazozung 3 months ago
@zazozung
The Vikings defense was not asked to stop teams that year. They had to score to win, so a lot of the blame has to go to Gary Anderson. It was a 39 yard field goal and it was indoors, there was no wind.

Terryfan 4 months ago
@Terryfan The Titans were playing The 1999 Rams juggernaut. There wasn't any "Titans should've won that game" talk. They were lucky to get within that last yard. Nobody who saw the play though he was really gonna reach the goal line. He made a monumental effort to stretch within 4 feet or so, but the tackle had already been secured. The Titans needed The Music City Miracle to get past The Bills in the playoffs. The '98 Vikes & then the '07 Pats set record for most points ever scored. 2 chokes.
pewsterbaby 4 months ago
@pewsterbaby You're right the Titans were lucky to even make it to the superbowl and I am not taking anything from the 99 Rams they were a powerhouse I never would take that from them they earn their win in the superbowl. Again it was just the principle of the thing thats all. Both the 98 Vikes and 07 Patriots may have been the favorites to win the superbowl but they failed and they lost to the underdogs in their respect games.
Terryfan 4 months ago
I remember watching that game and just simply knowing he was going to miss it. Don't ask me how. I was just 100% sure he would miss it.

@vadimzdonutube I know! They should've stop the Falcons!

i dont blame gary. what about the drive the vikes made at the end and denny decided to take a knee with 50 seconds left
Classic1942 5 months ago
@Classic1942 what about when denny tried to score before halftime and cunningham fumbled and the falcons scored a TD? can't have it both ways
sportsfreak78 5 months ago
That really wasn't Andersons fault, a Falcons player came in on the right and Anderson pulled the kick left so it wouldn't get blocked, most kickers in todays game will do this, it's just instinct. Maybe they should have blocked better on the field goal.

I'll never forget that kick. I cried. Not ashamed to admit it.
94jg 6 months ago
Obviously Anderson is a goat, but there were so many things that cost the Vikes this game. I always wondered what "would have" happened it Anderson's kick would have been accurate right down the middle or towards the right. I say that because I think the Falcons have a great shot at blocking it if you look at the guy coming off the end. Anyway, Vikes probably would have lost to Denver anyway. Denver would have worn out the Vikes with TD just like the Bucs did earlier in the year with Alstott
toeazy34 6 months ago
@toeazy34 Even if the Vikings would have made it to the Superbowl The Denver Broncos would have destroy them like they destroy the Falcons in the game. again it's the Principle of the thing. Just because a team play like Superbowl champions don't always mean they are going to be in the superbowl and all the blame shouldn't be place on Anderson because the whole team took themselves out of the game
Terryfan 4 months ago
Oh yeah John Randal has 2 sacks and 5 tackles in that game too.

JadedRomantic 7 months ago 14
@JadedRomantic You people are nothing but a bunch of arrogant, slovenly cakestuffers who use your franchise's supposedly nice qualities to be insufferable pricks. "Oh, we're from Wiscaaansin!"
PolarBearPunch 7 months ago
@PolarBearPunch
EAT IT!
JadedRomantic 7 months ago
@JadedRomantic Damn that is true1 so why is The Cowboys Americas team? Seems like that should be the Packers title.
rnk737737 7 months ago
@rnk737737
Don't believe everything you see on TV, kiddies. America's team really only apppies to Tom Landry's Cowboys in the late 70s, just as the Monsters of Midway only applies to the 1940 Bears.
Go Pack!
JadedRomantic 7 months ago
@JadedRomantic See my comment stands. Nothing but arrogant pricks that no one likes. :) and international? I was a an exchange student over to the uk and i saw plenty of vikings jerseys and many other teams. Dolphins.. and so on. Trust me you are not the only international team lmfao.
PolarBearPunch 7 months ago
@JadedRomantic Strangely... umm the Broncos won that year, and the year before when they beat... the Packers. just saying.
SergeantDizzle00 6 months ago
@SergeantDizzle00
That misses the point. The point is, when the Super Bowl was within your grasp, you choked as you always did. 98 was certainly a setback, but we still have four rings, compared to your none. Green Bay 4 (or 13 counting all world titles), Minnesota 01
JadedRomantic 6 months ago
@JadedRomantic

GrassValleyGreg 7 months ago
@Rayden184 WRONG, that was a 47 yarder on grass outdoors. Norwood didn't have the range of Anderson and that was his longest fiel
