Lold. the "nerf" was actiually a buff. He became the "tanky" caster with retarted damage output. HEs even been nerfed since the "nerf". His rework made him a good champion as opposed to how he used to be.

To get more mana you build stuff like Banshee's Veil and suddenly you are not that squishy anymore, with Frozen Heart as well. This makes you tanky with a hell of a burst. (Life steal makes sense on that...)

So it is clear that Ryze has been buffed, but if you stack AP with him, he suck, which is probably what you did...
