You were blessed to have a moment like THAT. Penguins are beautiful birds and having one come up to you and so close. Wow!!! VERY jealous of your experience. I love penguins.
@kataisa3 This is how they identify each other. The parents will recognize the song of their chick out of thousands. They have to rely on sound because they don't see that well out of the water. The chicks on the other hand will try to get food from any grown-up
lo, i can just imagine mama looking the guy over and then moving her chick away saying "pay not attention to the funny big bird juniour" that's so cool though, penguins are awesome :-)
Hi sweetness. The truth is you do not get close to them. I had to lay still on the ice 50 feet from the rookery for 3 hours until they got close enough. The emperors are shy but curious birds and if you are patient, lay low and do not make sudden movements you might be blessed with moments like this
Apparently there are strange rules and regulations regarding being near penguins; you're not supposed to be within a certain range of them, but if they come up to you then you don't have to back away.
Most of the time, Emperor Penguins will come up to you, because they're curious & innocent like that. It's because they have almost no land-predators to worry about (except when they're babies; they have to worry about Skuas).
close encounters of the bird kind
