Michaels riffs are absolutely amazing. He is such a perfect example of a true musician writing the best material he can for the kind of music he wants to persue. Complex riffs with cool chord progressions, plus crazy melodic solos. The pure love for music and touring shows he is a true musician down to the core! He's a truly inspiring musician.
I'm a fan of Michael too, but I certainly don't think he's the best out there... His solos can get extremely repetitive, using the same licks over and over again. I loved his work in carcass, but he was no match for Bill Steer whatsoever... .
I agree, I think his brother is actually the superior guitarist in A/E, also, I know exactly what you mean about his repetetiveness, when I first listened to their latest album it was like the ending of a solo was exactly the same as a song in Doomsday Machine. Forgot the song, but I was like....why so lazy!? I'm more of a fan of Paul Waggoner and Joe Satriani.
If you see AE live, you'll find that Michael's solos are more melodic and compositional, while Chris tends to do shorter, improvised solos. On average, most of the solos are played by Michael. Chris is fantastic, but I don't understand why people propagate this myth that Michael is the lesser guitarist. It's Michael's band, he writes all the riffs and melodies.
Man is he one of the most amazing guitarists I know of, almost no one can reach of his level of melodic prowess when it comes to writing leads, his feeling when he plays is great, lots of shredders can only dream to reach his level.
Glad you said ALMOST no one, lol because John Petrucci, haha. Yeah, though! Micheal is just outstanding. Honestly I've never, never, never heard an AE song that I don't like. There are only 2 other bands I can say that about! I can't wait to see them again in an actual headliner!
what is that guy talking about michael amott writes the majority of the songs and atleat 50/50 on solos. and wtf "other guitarists who played with arch enemy" umm are you retarded its only been chris and michael amott up until 2005.. so yea learn about the band before posting false info
Unfortunately, Michael isn't the guy behind the solos in Arch Enemy, he only has Hybrids of Steel to his name. I say unfortunately because (from what I heard in his work with Carcass) he is a better guitarist than any of the guitarists who played lead for Arch Enemy.

I must ask: what are you talking about? How is Micheal NOT the creator of his own solos?
guitaroach 4 years ago
Your an idiot, he is the founder of the band, and wrote pretty much all of the material
dimesatch 4 years ago
Ummm. First off, no, he does play his own solos and writes all of their shit, and Chris is a more technical flashy player

I admire his playing, so polished.
