  • I have two videos. One in response to your wonderful video and another one attached to another video.

Trying to confirm Color Wheel Issue or Ballast Issue.

  • @bud8man - After watching your video, I would guess its the color wheel or a noisy fan.

  • So i have a Samsung HLN617W. I got the flashing lamp light nd replaced the lamp. But still when i turn on the tv all i hear is the power on sound and i dont see and hear anything. I had replaced the lamp once b4 and thinking it was the same problem i did it again but its still not working. Im unsure if its the color wheel because i dont hear anything at all. But through the little window it looks like shards of glass just laying there. Was wondering if u had any idea and could help me out Please

  • @veas369 - It could be several things: The new lamp is defective, you have a cooling fan burned out, your color wheel is bad (do an inspection of it, if any of the color lenses are shattered, the TV won't power on), or lastly the bulb ballast may be bad. Use a vacuum cleaner and get that glass out of there. Good luck!

  • @databits Ok so i was able to use ur video to open up my tv. Thank you! but now i

dont know where i can get a color wheel. I checked on ebay nd amazon but

they dont have one for my tv. :/ any last advice?

  • @veas369 - What is the model number of your TV?

  • @databits HLN617W1X and the Lamp number is BP96-00224E if that helps in any way

  • @veas369 - The part number for your TV is BP96-00250A. They DO have them on ebay.

  • @veas369 - Sorry, I meant Amazon. Ebay too though.

  • Thank you for the video! It worked great! I also took a picture of the wires to refer back to but it was amazingly simple while it seemed overwhelming during the process. Worked like a charm and saved me tons of money and the hassle of bothering with a TV repair center! Before my color wheel blew out completely, it sounded loud like an airplane taking off! Now the color looks great and it is so quiet!

  • @TheClearparadigm - You're Welcome!! I always enjoy hearing these success stories. Mine is still running great even after replacing my color wheel a year ago! Hopefully its good for another 5 years!

  • Thanks Mr, Tompkins, I Pay Pal'd you a beer. Slante. Took about 2 hours with you beside me on my iPad 2, and no issues. We did it! It works with no more squeeling. Bought the part from eBay for I think around $80 or something. So for those preparing for TV surgery, you will need cordless screwdriver, one long skinny screwdriver (all Phillips head screws) magnetized would help or needle nose pliers, a vacuum, a container for many screws, a flash light, and courage. Thanks again.

  • @yogibearstie - Thanks again for the beer via paypal!! Hope your TV is still kickin it!

  • databits question, im assuming its the color wheel that needs to be replaced on my TV. It makes a loud kinda scratching sound, but the thing after 15 to an hour of using my tv the image randomly stays still and turns black and white. I can here the audio playing normally tho. Could it not be the color wheel?

  • @rekahoe - Sorry I missed this...like 7 months later. lol This sounds more like a graphics processor going bad than a color wheel. With the color wheel you hear noise similar to a blender inside your TV, and the color just goes all funky.

  • Would you say it's dangerous to open one of these screens? My color wheel has gone out (always shows an off color on screen, and then turns itself off.)

I got it open, but I see these ugly capacitors in my way. I wanna get to the color wheel, but I'm scared of getting a huge shock. What precautions should I take?

How long should I wait before touching stuff in there after it's been unplugged?

  • @izlude2 - You must make sure the unit is unplugged (of course), but without specifically seeing the inside of your set I can't really say whether those "ugly" capacitors are hazardous. Familiarize yourself with what a power supply circuit board looks like and then AVOID that area of the TV even when its unplugged. If in doubt, wear thick rubber gloves to isolate your skin from any possible shock hazard. You don't need to wait, you can begin the repair as soon as you unplug your set.

  • Great video. Matches my HLN model closely.

I'd like to point out that if you have the problem of a collapsed light tunnel (shadowing on edge of screen) this video nails that repair also. Do everything Databits says to get to the color wheel.

At minute 8:45 you can see a shiny thin metal plate just behind the color wheel. The light tunnel is underneath it. Simply remove the 5 screws on top of the plate and 1 or 2 on the face of it. Lift off the plate to expose the tunnel.

  • Word of advice, buy a new tunnel. For me part #BN67-00058A. Don't bother re-gluing the old one. The narrow sides sit inside the wide sides but aren't recessed all the way in. If you re-glue it with the narrow pieces flush with the edges of the wide pieces you'll have narrowed the horz dimension too much and will create the shadows you are trying to eliminate.

Many sources have it back ordered. I found it at, of all places, Sears Parts for $44! TV-Part.com also said they had it in stock.

  • Wouldn't have been able to do this very easily without this video. Thanks. Make sure since you have the TV apart you clean the large mirror behind the screen and the back of the screen. My TV is brand new again! Vibrant... If you take the 2 side panels off you can clean it through 2 square holes. A film develops on these things after time dulling the picture.

  • Great video!! Step by step was awesome, allowed me to replace the color wheel and rid my life of the incessant whine from the old wheel :) My ears thank you!

  • HELO DATABITS I HAVE THE TOSHIBA 56HM16 DLP THE TV AFTER 30 MINUTES TO START THE DISPLAY START TO FLASHING AND STOP TO FLASHING 3 MINUTES LATER AND LOSE THE COLORS LOOK LIKE PACTHES GREEN YELLOS IN THE PEOPLE FACE THE COLOR BLACK LOOK LIKE PURPLE .. YOU TINKING IS THE COLORWHEEL THANKS FOR YOU HELP

  • @RASGUNO - It could be the color wheel, but unfortunately you can't buy a color wheel part for a Toshiba, you have to purchase a $300 "Light Engine" part. My advice: sell the Toshiba for parts and find a "Free" or cheap Samsung DLP from Craigslist. Samsungs have cheaper parts. Toshiba's DLP's are not worth fixing.

  • Thank you!

  • Thanksssssssss!!!!!

  • Thank you so much for this video. The directions were so concise that even I, a chick, was able to do this. I would recommend looking inside the TV 1st to become familiar with everything & take pictures if you're not sure where things go. I watched this video several times & it seems hard at 1st but after several viewings I realized it wasn't as hard as I 1st thought. Thanks again!!

  • Bravo... finished in under an hour. I *almost* lost track of which wire went where... advise you track that carefully. I was dreading putting everything back together only to discover I had missed a wire... that would suck! Thanks a ton for the video!

  • @gianthawk- you are so welcome! that's exactly the kind of comment I was hoping to get! enjoy your TV!

  • I can't thank you enough for posting this video! I just used your walk-through to replace the color wheel in my HLN467W model TV. Since my TV is a different size there were very minor differences with the layout of the color wheel cover and wires but overall the steps were spot on. Thanks so much dude - you just saved me like $350 bucks. (To others who are thinking about doing this yourself - go for it - I am terrible when it comes to this stuff and I did it in 1.5 hours)

  • @gianthawk - you are so welcome! that's exactly the kind of comment I was hoping to get! enjoy your TV!

  • @databits This is exactly I want to say about "to others"
