This is probably mainly due to the stress he was under at the sight of a queue forming and inability to answer your questions fully. it wouldnt work in wh smith where i worked when i was young, we put the money on a clip outside the till, then gave the change and receipt, only when the customer was going did we put the money in the till. we would have pushed the bell button and security would have picked him up for fraud.

I do agree that most teenager employees lack the confidence to contradict an older customer, or a group of them, however, the focus of the brain of the employee along with the conversation was working towards the number 20. Poor kid. This is not funny. I had a cab driver do this to me when I was young. I was very polite and helpful to all my customer. I loved people at the time. He con me out of $20 dollars and I did not have to pay for them, but I got written up and embarrassed. I look like a thief. I don't like to still from the places I work at, period. And that asshole made look bad.

I believe this to be real, it's a simple in how it's done but is not easy to do. The process is simple, but achieving the state is not. If he had come across as nervous when he said "I gave you a twenty", the cashier would have picked up on this and challenged him.
It's a case of distraction, suggestion and rapport. I understand it's not the best to prove, because that could have just have been a lazy cashier. I believe this to be accurate having watched it though.

Not exactly correct. I do agree that most teenager employees lack the confidence to contradict an older customer, or a group of them, however, the focus of the brain of the employee along with the conversation was working towards the number 20. It is indeed a way to trick someone's brain into not realising, BUT! It could just be that the guy was afraid of an older dude with a huge black trench and a tripod on his hand.
I guess it can go both ways, but theoretically it is a true concept.

This isn't really in the same league as Derren Brown (eg dog racing scam) but it's relying on a similarity, ie the repetitiveness of till work. I've spent years working behind a till and it's so easy to get distracted. You don't want to be rude to the customer who is paying so you pay attention to them. At the same time if you're handed a £20 note for something that's under a tenner, you're making the change up to £10 in your head and it's easy to forget the £10 note you owe them too.
