@misterdeity I am honored that Mr. Deity himself responded! As I see it, there are two ways to respond to suffering. We can either draw inward in despair and contempt towards others or we can reach out are arms with love and hope. I choose the second. While my brother with Down syndrome may not have the highest IQ, his wisdom surpasses the majority of great thinkers. Instead of sarcasm in the face of adversity, he shows compassion toward all. I continue to learn from him and my mother...
@gracewaters09 Yes, I am aware that people with Down Syndrome can be truly amazing human beings. And people with Lou Gehrig's disease, can be among the move valuable people on the planet (certain scientists, for instance), but I also thing the world would be a much better place if people didn't suffer from such ailments. And so do the religious. That's why they created Heaven!
@misterdeity Mr. deity and the scripts? couldn't find the reference on the episode and i can't find mr deity and the notes on the youtube searcher or your channel :c
I wonder if they realize that God doesn't put that shit in the universe, it's just natural stuff. @Jpapi96 Well, it's just natural stuff that God created. There's absolutely no way to absolve an all-powerful, all-knowing being from being responsible for the evil in our world. He could have easily set up the laws of nature so that there were never Earthquakes, tsunamis, etc... and we would never know different. Just like we don't fall into a void, or stumble into another dimension and flatten ourselves. It's all His doing.

Oh and according to that, you shouldn't be judging me. Mr. Diety explains it all!
@firestarter338 You still support a god that's not powerful enough to solve problems without eternal torture. I can judge you all I want. I don't worship a being that tells me he's the judge and that my opinion is irrelevant. It's not pre-judging when you say what religion you support and Mr Diety is a character.
@clipsryan I really don't understand what you just said. If you are a Catholic yes you do worship a being who considers your opinion irrelevant. If you have thousands of people praying for the well being of a child and that child dies, he's a dick and not worth a defense. A prayer "working" has always been based on personal experience. I say that Mr. Diety explains everything...including why you are picking on me.
@firestarter338 You can claim to be what you want. At that point, if you aren't the image of a believer, that can set a pattern of deception and denial for all labels that you claim apply to you but are just masks. It matters that people don't change the reputation of a belief system based on the majority so that the actually core of the belief system is over shadow by this fake fellowship bullshit.
I'm picking on you because you're making it easy. He explains how your religion is stupid. :)
@firestarter338 You still support a god that's not powerful enough to solve problems without eternal torture. I can judge you all I want. I don't worship a being that tells me he's the judge and that my opinion is irrelevant. It's not pre-judging when you say what religion you support and Mr Diety is a character.
@clipsryan What? "I don't worship a being that tells me he's the judge and that my opinion is irrelevant." What God do you worship? Oh and how do you know that I even worship? Maybe I was just born, baptized & educated as a Catholic. Mr. Diety is as much of a character as GOD, and he explains a lot more of what's going on perfectly.
@firestarter338 I said a being which implies natural and supernatural. I don't worship either. Which religion you were born in is irrelevant when you are honest enough to see the satire in a video making fun of your religion. If you don't worship your god, I'm sorry (kinda) to say that your not a catholic. You're one of many people that laugh at the honest followers but don't realise how they're the ones who actually believe and don't just put on a label for comfort.
@firestarter338 If you need to ask these questions, apparently it's way over your head. No trip, to EXPLAIN religious hypocrisy and there's nothing I need to defend.
@clipsryan I've been able to explain myself with facts. I don't really understand what your problem is except that you have no facts and are trolling for a black eye. So far I haven't shown any religious hypocrisy. Just simply stating a fact...Mr. Deity explains "God" better than the Catholic church. Seeing that you didn't know what Catechism was you have no basis for inserting yourself and judging my comment.
@firestarter338 You apparently don't know how to provide those "facts" considering you need to use pretty lame threats. Mr Deity, parodies the biblical god which is the god you claim to be a follower of. This is ofcourse not true if you just like calling yourself a catholic. The fact that you give him credit but still call yourself a catholic, means you either don't understand that parody, or are in denial. In that case, I get to judge you all I want.
@clipsryan Actually I did. You just don't understand. Go re-read my posts and look up the references I cite. Quit serving word salad. Go do volunteer work, pick your nose, just go do something that makes sense because you are failing here.
@firestarter338 Actually, you didn't. You saying you did, doesn't make it so. As these comments fill this thread you've refused to explain how a catholic could even admire a person that destroys their belief system and not convert.
@clipsryan Why do you care if I admire Mr. Diety or not? Why are you worth my explaining anything to you if you aren't studied in Catholicism? You don't recognize the reference I used. You have not given me any indication at all that you know anything about what you are talking about or arguing about.
@firestarter338 It's pretty simple. You believe in superstition and I (along with Mr Deity) don't. Catholicism believes that gays are evil, that women are inferior and that all non-believers deserve eternal torture. Pretty simple.
@clipsryan I don't believe that gays are evil or that women are inferior and that all -non belivers deserve eternal torture. I believe what I want regardless of who is in the room, or what tradition I was brought up in. You are not superior simply because you believe in Mr. Diety. You are the most stupid person on the planet who can't even explain thyself. You can't even hold two conflicting thoughts in your head at the same time. CLIPSRYAN YOU ARE A TOTAL IDIOT. NOW F*CK OFF!
@firestarter338 If you claim to be a catholic, you're suppose to believe that crap. If you don't, you're not a catholic. Simple as that. Mr Diety actually exists so why would I claim to be superior in believing that he exists. Whatever helps you think you've defended yourself. FYI, you haven't and saying I'm the most stupid person on the planet without even a little bit of a reason, doesn't make you look too smart. Now, go fuck yourself.
Would be funnier if Mr. Deity had given reasons why he's keeping certain disasters or suffering 'in', so a bit underplayed in that respect and perhaps some lost humor opportunities. Larry is fantastic. Nice timing and delivery. He looks the part too.
Mr. Deity looks and sounds a bit like George Lucas heh.
I know it's too late to do anything about this episode...just watching it for the first time. ;)
@HiphopMoses Wow, been a long time... HipHopMoses, you are conveniently leaving out most of the equation. "someone other than you knowing the outcome has nothing to do with your will to do it." BARELY comes close to being analogous to the idea of an all knowing god creating us to do things and then torturing us for all eternity when we do the things he predestined us to do. Either god created us to do these things knowing the outcome, or we have free will. You cannot have both. Period.
This series is the funniest, most clever series I've ever seen. I recommend everyone watch ALL the videos, which you can get on iTunes, and subscribe.
I know it's annoying when people just quote the video we all just watched, but I must point out that "Lou Gherig's Disease".. "Uh, leave that in... but wait for Lou" "Yeah, wait for Lou..." is possibly one of the FUNNIEST sets of lines I have ever seen.
I have watched this episode at least a dozen times and although I know it's coming I still lose it at "wait for Lou" and "Celine Dion". Mr. Deity, you are the best. Looking forward to meeting you after the Rapture!
This show FUCKING KILLS ME! Hilarious! Thankfully I lost my belief in superstition and magical sky pixies that was forced upon me as a catholic child due to a terminal case of reason. Now i get to spend all of my formerly wasted prayer time watching Mr. Deity! Yaay! My life is full!
Im guessing the sound thats bothering Mr Deity in the beginning is the microwave background radiation from the big bang that W-map found?
BTW just found your channel today but loving these episodes. Expertly acted and written. This definately deserves a half-hour series on Comedy Central before or after Stewart and Colbert.
I showed this to my Evangelical Christian friend and he loved it. After the "I had seven but there's no way I'm coming in tomorrow now," line he was hooked. We spent the rest of the night with a few drinks watching every episode of mr.deitY.
@sulljoh1 You are like the Paul of Mr. Deity theology -- going out to the heathens and converting them en masse (or one at a time... either way is good). Thanks so much! You rock!
@mrcheddar ... I believe. I believe that we all have been taken for a ride by man made religions. All they seem to want is to control ur thoughts and ur lives in order for "it" to survive. Look out side the box but inside YOU. Only then will you find the answers!
God is real. But not the way we envision thru religions. Religions are man made to serve mass control over people. We are dumb enough to follow them and habits are hard to break.
Religion is a means to keep us from finding our real Creator in all of this.
Religion = the greatest STORY ever told.
Look within yourself and the answers will start flooding you.
Your half way there, you've realised religion is bullshit... but still believe in some random "god" whatever that means, which if i asked you to describe or explain you would not be able to.
@decaalv The Holy Spirit is just another word for God in the Bible; it was seized upon by pre-Catholic theologians with OCD who thought the idea of three gods in one was aesthetically pleasing.
@decaalv No. I blaspheme against him all the time -- take his name in vain -- I even have lunch with his brother, Casper, just to piss him off. He's not as tough as people make him out to be. I think it's the leather and the hog that intimidate people. But I know he's just a bully -- and a sissy to boot. The fact of the mater is, he's much more afraid of me than I am of him. I've challenged him to fight on numerous occasions and he never shows up -- the coward!

So, I'm reading previous comments from nighthawk w/e and other ppl who bitch about religion.
OH my effing God (lol) WHY does there have to be such stupid religious comments on these vids?! I KNEW there'd be some assholes like you around commenting on "oh this is blasphemy hurr durr hurr durr whatever.
MR. DEITY IS GENIUS. GET OVER IT. THAT'S IT. SHUT UP. NOBODY NEEDS TO HEAR YOUR CRAP. YOU PREACH IT ENOUGH.
@Totolly I understand what you're saying, but as a secular humanist, but among my most cherished values are free expression and honest, open debate. Nighthawk has valid questions/points and deserves an honest reply. I believe he is sincere and not simply trolling in order to ruin the experience of others here.
I appreciate the kind words, but I think we can all be tolerant of each other's sincere questioning. We certainly don't want to become what we most despise.
@Mr. Deity, I would love to see you guys go network, BUT, I am just so afraid that you would have to ......"adjust your point of view".....I hope that never happens. Please don't sell out maintain your point on structures!
@InScienceITrust We could never go "Network" because of the very thing you've said. Test best we could hope for is to be picked up by some gutsy cable outlet. This is not the kind of thing I could sell out on. If I were to adjust my view, it wouldn't be Mr. Deity. It would be just another God-based form of entertainment. I do have a point here, and that's what this is all about.
This is kind of dumb. We would be god to an ant, and we don't give much thought to stepping on one. Why do we expect God to treat us differently? Because we feel we are somehow more important than the ant?
I can't believe I was blocked by Mr. Diety. I thought we couldn't harm each other with merely our thoughts. A youtube comment is a thought typed on a screen. I hope I don't get blocked from Heaven.
I was an atheist turned agnostic/deist-type twentysomething when I changed my mind and went searching for God, expecting to find nothing. I was surprised at the things that God revealed to me immediately after I got over myself and gave my life to Him.
"When I started to realize that Jesus wasn't the pasty-faced little sissy that I had been taught that he was, I wanted to know more. My trust in the wisdom of the world, corrupt religions and seeking approval from females for the sake of feminism was the real reason I was so miserable, it was never God's fault. Mankind hasn't got jack figured out about anything and never will. Doctors and Psychologists and Pharmacists with all their posturing and greed. Bah! "
Between man and religion, I'll take man. In the past 400 years, mankind has "figured out" and cured diseases, launched planes into the air, discovered the genes which make us who we are, and put a man on the moon. Christianity had 1000 years to prove its worth to mankind, and what did it give us? The Dark Ages. Hell on Earth. War, ignorance, fear, superstition, and a terrorist police state. Woody Allen said it best — "Between the Pope and air conditioning, I'll take air conditioning." Amen!
@nighthawk7878 And instead of realized Jesus wasn't a sissy, you should have realized that there's no historical evidence for Jesus. The Gospels are not written by eye-witnesses. The Gospels were all anonymous and the names were place there later by the Catholic Church. The story of Jesus is just another version of the dying/resurrecting god/man myth which had been around for centuries before Christianity. Research this with an open mind and you will see that I am telling the truth.
@misterdeity You really can't prove that this guy did not experience what he said. Don't try to shame someone for their weaknesses, all humans have them.-- all humans. There is a wisdom of this world that will make one miserable. I did not write this. Did you see the quote marks? I put it her for the pleasure of your readers.
@nighthawk7878 Who the hell are you quoting? And why would you quote someone else in your comment without attributing? Very strange.
I don't doubt that someone really experienced it. I just don't know why that makes it valuable. There are all kinds of people who leave religion because religion was making them miserable. So what? That says nothing more of religion than this guy's comment says of the "wisdom of this world."
@misterdeity Strange to you may not be strange to me. I could attribute but then, I don't want someone going after him.
Your world is your world, but there is more than your world out there.. Words really can not discredit what millions have experienced. Those experiences have value and meaning. Voids have been filled. Intellect enlightened. Peace experienced. Love received and love given. But, those may not be for you, they are for some, but not for all.
@nighthawk7878 "There is more than your world out there." Prove it and I'm there with you. So far, naturalistic explanations have moved humanity from the dark ages to the freedom and enlightenment of which you take every advantage. What millions have experienced means nothing. Millions of Atheists experience the same (myself included). So what? It means nothing about the nature of reality. That requires hard work and discipline, not just people's anecdotal "experiences."
@nighthawk7878 Well, from your other posting above, I don't believe for a second that you were a philosophically committed atheist. It sound like you were kind of pathetic ("seeking approval from females? Really?). I suspect you were just someone without any rudder or any real thought regarding these things. A little investigation would have done you a world of good -- or seeking the good life. But religion makes a nice substitute for some.
@misterdeity Many men and boy see female approvals. He has a rudder now and so do I. A rudder, an anchor, sails, bow, stern, the whole boat. I hope you can understand that we speak out of something that is flowing in and out of our lives. There is so much out there to be known and understood that we have not experienced yet.
@nighthawk7878 Yes, many men seek female approval. But I think that is a pathetic way to live. And to seek the approval of a being one does not even know exists, and to think that a book written thousands of years ago contains the word of God is equally pathetic in the sense that one is still not living one's own life and thinking one's own thoughts. You're still living for the approval of others. I would suggest that you get to know what YOU think rather than looking outside yourself.
@misterdeity Again, reality is, that is a quote from someone else.
What may be pathetic to you has bases.
"living one's own life" "thinking one's own thoughts" even "living for the approval of others" "get to know what YOU think"
Psychologist even would categorize the above as self-oriented, selfish, self-centered, maybe egotistical. These orientations are our issue/faults as humans.
@MD I am not a robot. I think my own thoughts, independently of others. Not seeking approval. BUT, there is much outside myself that is valuable and meritorious. And from those I freely receive and take.
@nighthawk7878 No. Psychologists call that a healthy, mature individual. Knowing yourself (the recommendation of both Socrates and Shakespeare) is the way to enlightenment and inner peace. What is selfish and egotistical is thinking that this world was created for you, and that YOU know the will of a being who we don't even know exists, telling others how to live. That is chutzpah of the highest order, and has lead to more suffering than just about any idea in history.
@misterdeity Socrates and Shakespeare are only two men. I draw from many more that just two. The philosophy that you listed is not owned by me. I don't think that way. I agree with you on the outcome of history. The Hitlers and Stalins and the Khmer Rouge's of the world who lived like that and think like that have certainly caused much suffering.
@nighthawk7878 Well, far more people than just those two advocated knowing one's self. But I'm not surprised to hear a Xtian balk at the idea of knowing one's self.
The other guys you mention, followed the perfect model of the Christian terror/police state outlined by medieval Christianity. It's the same idea. Claim you know what's right, shut down debate, force people to obey, kill those who don't. I prefer the free, secular humanist state of the American Constitution.
@nighthawk7878 The Communists were Atheists. Hitler was a Catholic. I'm not pro-Atheism per se. I'm pro-secular humanism.
And what I said (if you read it carefully) is that they followed the same model which that Xtians used to drag Europe into the Dark Ages. Totalitarian, terror-based, police state. Read up on Christian Europe. That's why people got into tiny boats to come to America -- because Xtianity had turned Europe into a living Hell. Nazism, Communism, and Fascism followed that model.
@misterdeity Hitler was a Catholic....LOL. If Hitler was a Catholic then I am a car because I have been to the garage. Giving Hitler a label means nothing. Hitler may be quoted as saying he was Catholic. That means nothing. Hitler was an mad egotist--antithetical to the values the Jesus I know laid His life down for. And the "hell" in Europe was not due to anything that Jesus promoted.
@nighthawk7878 Of course it was due to Jesus' teachings. He said anyone who doesn't believe in him goes to Hell. That's the entire basis for the terror of the inquisition, heresy hunting, witch hunting, and the police state that arose. And like Pat Robertson today, they blamed all the bad things that happened on the tolerance of heretics, witches, etc... (now they blame "homos"). And Jews were at the top of that list 'cause Jesus called them the children of Satan. Thus, the Holocaust.
@misterdeity Everybody and everything is to blame.
I reflect back on the quote that started this thread. That person came to grips with his own personal failings as so many others have. I hope you can do that--we all have issues with which to deal. So, yes "know thyself" and be honest about your own ability to control your destiny. I found that I have no control and thus, the reason to look outside myself for meaning in life.
@nighthawk7878 That's a pretty big shrug to the police state and totalitarianism. Take responsibility for your ideology! This stuff kills! And I think it's the essence of selfishness to say, "I get comfort and/or meaning from it, so who cares what it's done/does or what these ideas lead to." The inquisition, the witch hunts, the police state were all logical and seemingly inevitable consequences of Christian ideology. The people committing these atrocities had chapter and verse to back them up.

So far I haven't shown any religious hypocrisy. Just simply stating a fact...Mr. Deity explains "God" better than the Catholic church. Seeing that you didn't know what Catechism was you have no basis for inserting yourself and judging my comment.
firestarter338 3 months ago
@firestarter338 You apparently don't know how to provide those "facts" considering you need to use pretty lame threats. Mr Deity, parodies the biblical god which is the god you claim to be a follower of. This is ofcourse not true if you just like calling yourself a catholic. The fact that you give him credit but still call yourself a catholic, means you either don't understand that parody, or are in denial. In that case, I get to judge you all I want.
clipsryan 3 months ago
@clipsryan Actually I did. You just don't understand. Go re-read my posts and look up the references I cite. Quit serving word salad. Go do volunteer work, pick your nose, just go do something that makes sense because you are failing here.
firestarter338 3 months ago
@firestarter338 Actually, you didn't. You saying you did, doesn't make it so. As these comments fill this thread you've refused to explain how a catholic could even admire a person that destroys their belief system and not convert.
clipsryan 3 months ago
@clipsryan Why do you care if I admire Mr. Diety or not? Why are you worth my explaining anything to you if you aren't studied in Catholicism? You don't recognize the reference I used. You have not given me any indication at all that you know anything about what you are talking about or arguing about.
firestarter338 3 months ago
@firestarter338 It's pretty simple. You believe in superstition and I (along with Mr Deity) don't. Catholicism believes that gays are evil, that women are inferior and that all non-believers deserve eternal torture. Pretty simple.
clipsryan 3 months ago
@clipsryan I don't believe that gays are evil or that women are inferior and that all -non belivers deserve eternal torture. I believe what I want regardless of who is in the room, or what tradition I was brought up in. You are not superior simply because you believe in Mr. Diety. You are the most stupid person on the planet who can't even explain thyself. You can't even hold two conflicting thoughts in your head at the same time. CLIPSRYAN YOU ARE A TOTAL IDIOT. NOW F*CK OFF!
firestarter338 3 months ago
@firestarter338 If you claim to be a catholic, you're suppose to believe that crap. If you don't, you're not a catholic. Simple as that. Mr Diety actually exists so why would I claim to be superior in believing that he exists. Whatever helps you think you've defended yourself. FYI, you haven't and saying I'm the most stupid person on the planet without even a little bit of a reason, doesn't make you look too smart. Now, go fuck yourself.

"Yeah, but let's wait for Lou." I damn near pissed my pants when I heard that. Am I going to hell because I laughed so hard?

Period.

@mrcheddar ... I believe. I believe that we all have been taken for a ride by man made religions. All they seem to want is to control ur thoughts and ur lives in order for "it" to survive. Look out side the box but inside YOU. Only then will you find the answers!
OverkilledUnderdog 1 year ago
God is real. But not the way we envision thru religions. Religions are man made to serve mass control over people. We are dumb enough to follow them and habits are hard to break.
Religion is a means to keep us from finding our real Creator in all of this.
Religion = the greatest STORY ever told.
Look within yourself and the answers will start flooding you.

@InScienceITrust We could never go "Network" because of the very thing you've said. Test best we could hope for is to be picked up by some gutsy cable outlet. nighthawk7878 1 year ago
Bah! "
nighthawk7878 1 year ago
Between man and religion, I'll take man. In the past 400 years, mankind has "figured out" and cured diseases, launched planes into the air, discovered the genes which make us who we are, and put a man on the moon. Christianity had 1000 years to prove its worth to mankind, and what did it give us? The Dark Ages. Hell on Earth. War, ignorance, fear, superstition, and a terrorist police state. Woody Allen said it best — "Between the Pope and air conditioning, I'll take air conditioning." Amen!
misterdeity 1 year ago
@nighthawk7878 And instead of realized Jesus wasn't a sissy, you should have realized that there's no historical evidence for Jesus. The Gospels are not written by eye-witnesses. The Gospels were all anonymous and the names were place there later by the Catholic Church. The story of Jesus is just another version of the dying/resurrecting god/man myth which had been around for centuries before Christianity. Research this with an open mind and you will see that I am telling the truth.
misterdeity 1 year ago
@misterdeity You really can't prove that this guy did not experience what he said. Don't try to shame someone for their weaknesses, all humans have them.-- all humans. There is a wisdom of this world that will make one miserable. I did not write this. Did you see the quote marks? I put it her for the pleasure of your readers.
nighthawk7878 1 year ago
@nighthawk7878 Who the hell are you quoting? And why would you quote someone else in your comment without attributing? Very strange.
I don't doubt that someone really experienced it. I just don't know why that makes it valuable. There are all kinds of people who leave religion because religion was making them miserable. So what? That says nothing more of religion than this guy's comment says of the "wisdom of this world."
misterdeity 1 year ago
@misterdeity Strange to you may not be strange to me. I could attribute but then, I don't want someone going after him.
Your world is your world, but there is more than your world out there.. Words really can not discredit what millions have experienced. Those experiences have value and meaning. Voids have been filled. Intellect enlightened. Peace experienced. Love received and love given. But, those may not be for you, they are for some, but not for all.
nighthawk7878 1 year ago
@nighthawk7878 "There is more than your world out there." Prove it and I'm there with you. So far, naturalistic explanations have moved humanity from the dark ages to the freedom and enlightenment of which you take every advantage. What millions have experienced means nothing. Millions of Atheists experience the same (myself included). So what? It means nothing about the nature of reality. That requires hard work and discipline, not just people's anecdotal "experiences."
misterdeity 1 year ago
@nighthawk7878 Well, from your other posting above, I don't believe for a second that you were a philosophically committed atheist. It sound like you were kind of pathetic ("seeking approval from females? Really?). I suspect you were just someone without any rudder or any real thought regarding these things. A little investigation would have done you a world of good -- or seeking the good life. But religion makes a nice substitute for some.
misterdeity 1 year ago
@misterdeity Many men and boy see female approvals. He has a rudder now and so do I. A rudder, an anchor, sails, bow, stern, the whole boat. I hope you can understand that we speak out of something that is flowing in and out of our lives. There is so much out there to be known and understood that we have not experienced yet.
nighthawk7878 1 year ago
@nighthawk7878 Yes, many men seek female approval. But I think that is a pathetic way to live. And to seek the approval of a being one does not even know exists, and to think that a book written thousands of years ago contains the word of God is equally pathetic in the sense that one is still not living one's own life and thinking one's own thoughts. You're still living for the approval of others. I would suggest that you get to know what YOU think rather than looking outside yourself.
misterdeity 1 year ago
@misterdeity Again, reality is, that is a quote from someone else.
What may be pathetic to you has bases.
"living one's own life" "thinking one's own thoughts" even "living for the approval of others" "get to know what YOU think"
Psychologist even would categorize the above as self-oriented, selfish, self-centered, maybe egotistical. These orientations are our issue/faults as humans.
nighthawk7878 1 year ago
@MD I am not a robot. I think my own thoughts, independently of others. Not seeking approval. BUT, there is much outside myself that is valuable and meritorious. And from those I freely receive and take.
nighthawk7878 1 year ago
@nighthawk7878 No. Psychologists call that a healthy, mature individual. Knowing yourself (the recommendation of both Socrates and Shakespeare) is the way to enlightenment and inner peace. What is selfish and egotistical is thinking that this world was created for you, and that YOU know the will of a being who we don't even know exists, telling others how to live. That is chutzpah of the highest order, and has lead to more suffering than just about any idea in history.
misterdeity 1 year ago
@misterdeity Socrates and Shakespeare are only two men. I draw from many more that just two. The philosophy that you listed is not owned by me. I don't think that way. I agree with you on the outcome of history. The Hitlers and Stalins and the Khmer Rouge's of the world who lived like that and think like that have certainly caused much suffering.
nighthawk7878 1 year ago
@nighthawk7878 Well, far more people than just those two advocated knowing one's self. But I'm not surprised to hear a Xtian balk at the idea of knowing one's self.
The other guys you mention, followed the perfect model of the Christian terror/police state outlined by medieval Christianity. It's the same idea. Claim you know what's right, shut down debate, force people to obey, kill those who don't. I prefer the free, secular humanist state of the American Constitution.
misterdeity 1 year ago
@misterdeity Interesting that you call that Christian because those guys were atheists. This really is a contorted world we live in.
nighthawk7878 1 year ago
@nighthawk7878 The Communists were Atheists. Hitler was a Catholic. I'm not pro-Atheism per se. I'm pro-secular humanism.
And what I said (if you read it carefully) is that they followed the same model which that Xtians used to drag Europe into the Dark Ages. Totalitarian, terror-based, police state. Read up on Christian Europe. That's why people got into tiny boats to come to America -- because Xtianity had turned Europe into a living Hell. Nazism, Communism, and Fascism followed that model.
misterdeity 1 year ago
@misterdeity Hitler was a Catholic....LOL. If Hitler was a Catholic then I am a car because I have been to the garage. Giving Hitler a label means nothing. Hitler may be quoted as saying he was Catholic. That means nothing. Hitler was an mad egotist--antithetical to the values the Jesus I know laid His life down for. And the "hell" in Europe was not due to anything that Jesus promoted.
nighthawk7878 1 year ago
@nighthawk7878 Of course it was due to Jesus' teachings. He said anyone who doesn't believe in him goes to Hell. That's the entire basis for the terror of the inquisition, heresy hunting, witch hunting, and the police state that arose. And like Pat Robertson today, they blamed all the bad things that happened on the tolerance of heretics, witches, etc... (now they blame "homos"). And Jews were at the top of that list 'cause Jesus called them the children of Satan. Thus, the Holocaust.
misterdeity 1 year ago
@misterdeity Everybody and everything is to blame.
I reflect back on the quote that started this thread. That person came to grips with his own personal failings as so many others have. I hope you can do that--we all have issues with which to deal. So, yes "know thyself" and be honest about your own ability to control your destiny. I found that I have no control and thus, the reason to look outside myself for meaning in life.
nighthawk7878 1 year ago
@nighthawk7878 That's a pretty big shrug to the police state and totalitarianism. Take responsibility for your ideology! This stuff kills! And I think it's the essence of selfishness to say, "I get comfort and/or meaning from it, so who cares what it's done/does or what these ideas lead to." The inquisition, the witch hunts, the police state were all logical and seemingly inevitable consequences of Christian ideology. The people committing these atrocities had chapter and verse to back them up.
