If the team was not the same as pre-NHL, banners would not be in the rafters, the team name likely wouldnt be the same and it would not be recognized by them at all.

The Leafs have 4 slow defenseman (Exelby, Schenn Finger, Komisarek) but they're all great defensively so it makes up for it. I can't even think of any slow forwards (maybe Mayers but he plays on the 4th line) so I don't know where you're getting this lack of speed thing from. Adding toughness does not make you slow. Even Toronto's big men can skate well like Devane, Poni and Stalberg.
