It isn't necessary for a musician to grimace and contort his/her face as they play. Look at Maurice Andre and Tine Thing Helseth. They also play in a detached manner but are virtuosos nonetheless. If this fellow wasn't happy about playing the trumpet he'd have never put in the hours required to reach this level.
I believe the comments of the picky detractors would be MUCH more credible if they posted their own video on YouTube, playing this same piece. Otherwise they are just spewing hollow, worthless rhetoric.
the thing is that those who are a fake need complementary gestures and facial expressions as complement for their performance. genius never needs that
He's a spectacular player, but it's all technique - no passion! And there's videos of him at different ages all over the web playing this same song. It's so obvious he's one these kids forced to practice for hours each day. I kind of feel bad for him...
@mebmk2 No, I think that's just his personality. He went on a show that's pretty much 'Something's Got Talent' and he said he wanted to play professionally. You don't have to see his passion, you can hear it.
@mebmk2 ..Wrong.....there are numbers of trumpet players who display little, if any "passion". Ting Thing Helseth of Norway is one and Ronald Romm of the Canadian Brass is another. Even Maurice Andre didn't do a lot of "emoting" when he played. When a trumpeter is playing a classical piece I find it detracts from the performance if the musician is gesticulating wildly or making bizarre facial expressions. Give me the cool, calm collected performance anytime.
For tonal quality and purity of sound, this young man compares favorably to any popular trumpet player in the business today. For those who want to hear something negative about this performance all I can say is that he rushed a couple of phrases and got as much as a half beat ahead of the orchestra but I dare say that 95% of listeners could not even hear that. I am an enthusiastic fan! Bravo!
Many are obviously not listening to the artistry in the music this young man is creating. If you passed judgment on that rather than his facial appearance and body posture, you would recognize the artful beauty that is in his heart. Those who think his expressiveness is lacking have a lot to learn about the art of music. Phil Smith has commented on the great majority who play perfectly, and yet say nothing, musically. This young man says a lot, if the listener can understand musical expression.
He is like almost exactly like Sergey Nakariakov, with posture, style, and technique. Both of them are extremly skilled trumpet players. Its gonna be amazing to hear Rubén Simeó play in about 20 years from now.
It's amusing to read all the critiques from those posting on YouTube. My thought is this: When the complainers produce a video that's better than this, on the same piece and post it on YouTube...THEN they might have some credibility.
@SpeedyNeutrino43: There seem to be a certain percentage of people like SpeedyNeutrino43 that cannot handle anyone being critiqued. Basically, they do not seem to be able to distinguish between "critique" and "criticism". Viewers that comment on Simeo's seeming lack of emotion are merely making note of the interesting gap between Simeo's ability and his apparent lack of feeling. And, yes, Simeo and Nakariakov seem very similar in that regard. It's a paradox.
@windblowing Until you have heard Nakariakov live playing a piece such as the Haydn trumpet concerto or Bach mass in B minor arranged for flugelhorn, you should not claim that he plays with a lack of emotion. The reason you believe this is because the videos you see of him on youtube are all flashy pieces such as the carnival of venice with cannot be played with a deep sense of feeling as all they are a rubbish pieces to show off technique, not musicality, as this is what people want to see.
@obbw1985, the point of my post was to point out that there are certain personalities that are disturbed by criticism of others, regardless of whether the criticism might have merit. So, it is nor relevant whether Nakariakov lacks emotion or not.
@windblowing, i understood the main point of your post, however, you you did seem to agree with peoples comments that Simeo had a lack of feeling in his playing. I do not strongly disagree with that, but to say that those same qualities can be seen in Sergies playing is very wrong. I have met Alison Balsom and Haken Hadenberger aswell as Sergie, and can say his musicianship is equal to theirs easily. I think criticism is good, but it gets to a point where people are just being arrogant.
@obbw1985, it is still not clear we are communicating. Certainly, Narkariakov is brilliant, as is Simeo, Hardenberger, and Balsom. I am talking more about lay observations of Simeo in the Youtube comments. These usually do not even amount to negative criticisms. When a poster innocently observes that Simeo seems to lack emotion, others should not feel compelled to regard that as hateful criticism. Who knows what the apparent phlegmatism means, but many note it.
@jacobflaschen As a trumpet player who knows the piece being performed...Id beg to differ. Arban's Carnival of Venice is perhaps one of the most challenging trumpet solos (Flight of the Bumblebee might be the only one I can think of thats harder to perform) But for someone to have that degree of talent and not be passionate about playing the trumpet is unheard of.
@jacobflaschen It could just also be the pressure that he's facing. These series of videos are the first that I saw where Simon was in Japan. Japan being a huge scene for Wind Ensembles and musicians, maybe he felt a big pressure.
But I do agree, I see no passion in his playing... But I'm at no place to criticize his playing. Especially after that ending which wis pretty on par with Wynton's.
Last variation lil bit fast there dontcha think? kinda needs to be slowed down so you can enjoy the quality of the sound, it does show skill that he can play it that fast though. 5/5 and subbed awesome vid.
he is not meant to play at the orchestra's tempo, he is the soloist and as the solosit he determines the temp and the orchestra is meant to follow him.
and in what section was it too fast, i think that was a good tempo throughout the whole piece
I've seen W. Marsalis' performance of this... And Marsalis does use rubato.. Simeó is out of time. Not using rubato. It's the same in some of his other performances, its like he's fighting the orchestra rather than working with it... Or rather.. it seems that he plays his music.. and the orchestra plays theres.. with no link or collaboration.
He does have a bad habit of holding is trumpet at an angle though; but then again no one is perfect and through time he's gonna really develop and be up there with the best (if he isn't already)
Maurice taught him? He's gonna have a mountain to climb to over take him RIP

Guys serious, when you hear someone play as good as rubén does then you don't need to look at him. Just close you eyes and enjoy the music.
The way he looks this way is probably because he is totally relaxed while playing.
The technique he has is really amazing and he has a pure tone...
Just enjoy and stop complaining;)
To add to that, check out Sergei Nakariakov he doesn't show emotion aswell.....
Another proof of not having to laugh to be succesfull

and in what section was it too fast, i think that was a good tempo throughout the whole piece

the last variation was too fast. there's no need to play it that fast.
there's is nothing musical about playing something that fast. why would you waste talent on speed?

isnt he out of time with the orchestra quite a bit?

its called rubato its the style, watch Wynton Marsalis play this, you'll see what Im talking about.

He does have a bad habit of holding is trumpet at an angle though; but then again no one is perfect and through time he's gonna really develop and be up there with the best (if he isn't already)

el director toca la trompeta probablemente porque es la instumenta mas guay jaja

el director una crack ya se que un director solo tiene que marcar el tiempo pero ver como siente obra a pesar de no tocar ningun instrumento..
